Read the digital camera reviews on amazon, you can narrow it down by price and features. Even if you don't end up purchasing it there the reviews are extremely helpful. I have done that for all kinds of electronic devices (as well as other products) and have never been disappointed!

We recently had to buy a Canon Powershot for my SD's school (she broke theirs) and it was around $160. I am thinking of getting the same model for myself as my old Powershot is eating batteries and pretty banged up, but still works well otherwise (it is 4 yrs old and I am no great photographer but it has served me well). My SIL has a Nikon CoolPix that she likes. I would look for a camera that takes standard batteries vs one where the battery needs to be plugged in and charged. Being on vacation without means to power the camera stinks. Mine takes 2 AA batteries.

Panasonic Lumix

I had a TZ5 (stolen 2 weeks ago). It was a few years old. I loved it. Nice size. Easy to use.

We gave my teen daughter a Panasonic Lumix (don't know model #) for Christmas. She really likes it, especially the 16x zoom feature. It's a little over $200, but you can find it on sale. It's worth the few extra $$$.

My daughter had a Nikon Coolpix before the Panasonic and hated it.

Cannon Powershot SX40!!!!! It might be a little more expensive, but if you watch for sales especially at Staples you can get it for a good price. I just went through three digital cameras trying to find one that worked the way I needed it to work and that is...SIMPLE and QUICK! Right out of the box without reading any instructions this camera was taking great fast pictures. I don't think you can go wrong with any Cannon. I had a Nikon Coolpix and HATED it!!! I couldn't take a non-blurry picture to save my life. Good luck!
