Developmental Optomotrist?

My 8 year old son has very poor handwriting as well as nodules on the vocal cords. While these may seem unrelated, it makes communication very difficult. Well, difficult for us to understand anyway:). When he is on vocal rest, he needs to be able to write what he wants to say, but we can't read his handwriting to know what that says either. While we are working on the verbal side with speech therapy in the school, someone suggested that I take him to a Developmental Optomotrist. If anyone knows of one in the Houston area, I would love to hear about it. I can find some with google I am sure, but would love to pick someone that at least has been recommended to me.

Thanks!
K.

Don't go through all the trouble (and the money)of a specialist! Learn sign language. It's not just for the deaf, ya know. Learn it together and you will be able to use your "special language" any where you go. Learn it as a family, then you can communicate from across the room from eachother.

We use them and have had a grat experience. I used to have their address, I think it was on Calhoun. Not close, but worth the trip from Katy.

You may want to check out Dr. Ann Voss-The Vision Learning Center in Bellaire TX ###-###-#### I took my son there. My son is 8 also and I had no idea he needed glasses and we did the therapy. He also has poor handwriting and he gets speech and OT. Which you may want to look into also. Helping with lifting heavy things and playing with playdough helps make the muscles stronger in his hands. I hope some of this helped. Good Luck

Does he know how to type on a keyboard? Maybe you could use a computer screen and let him type what he wants to say. Also, you could teach him a few simple things in sign language, maybe just the frequent things like "I'm hungry or thirsty". You should be able to google sign language phrases and find out what it is. As far as an optomitrist, I don't know what a developmental optomotrist is, but I have a very good friend, Dr. Darlene Freeman, who is an optomotrist at Katy Family Eye Care (at Fry Road Walmart). She could probably recommend someone.
