Daylight Savings.... - Reston,VA

This Spring Forward, Fall Back "thing" is for the birds!!

I understand the concept has been around for hundreds of years, and that Ben Franklin wanted the United States to do it back in the 1700's...and I understand the concept in general - it allowed farmers to use more "daylight" to get more work done in the fields...

NOW?? WIth "modern technology" lights on tractors, more hands to do things...I don't think it's necessary...

What's your thought on daylight savings?? Should we keep it around??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the "myths" link. As I stated I knew the concept has been around PRIOR to Ben Franklin.

I love "falling back", but I hate "springing forward". The whole thing is mildly annoying, with having to change clocks etc, but not enough of an issue to make me want to try to change it.

I don't care for it myself and if it were up to a vote I would vote to stop it.

I have heard talk about a vote on to keep it or not around here.

I do ok with Fall Back but I despise Spring Forward

I remember when I was a kid and I'd get up to go to school and I'd be at the bus stop in pitch black. Then we'd change the clock and it would be daylight at the bus stop.

So yes, I think it works.

I agree with you. I find daylight savings to be a pointless waste of time. We should have just "fallen back" half an hour today, and then never bothered springing forward or falling back ever again. This is something that has far outlived its practical use in our lives!

I think it's beyond stupid. There are no more hours of daylight than before, and it just messes up everyone's internal clocks. It needs to die.

Many of the reasons we think Daylight Saving Time was established are myths. Farmers didn't want it and Ben Franklin was talking about waking up earlier, not changing the time.

Me? I can take it or leave it. I did enjoy the extra hour of sleep last night, though!

ETA: Putting the word myths in quotations doesn't change the fact that they are myths.....there are plenty of things we think to be true that aren't. Understanding of a concept means actually knowing the fact behind it, not the myths.

I LOVE daylight savings... I'm probably the only one, hehe.

"Fall back" actually puts us back where we should be, ie. "normal time".

But I really appreciate the "Spring forward", early mornings & still late evenings with light.

I think we should pick a time and stick with it, but I'm also not up in arms about it. At least for "fall back" we don't run late for church if we forget the clocks.

I wish we would stop.

Neither shannon (or the dog) got the memo on the change, so *I* certainly did not get an extra hour this morning!!

Grrrrrr....

Just made a second pot of coffee.

I'm more or less ok with it.
But if we were to stop switching I'd like to stop on daylight savings and not on standard time.
I like having more daylight in the afternoon than in the morning.
Give it a few more weeks though and we'll be in the dark on both ends - in the morning AND in the evening.

Additional:
Getting up with the sun makes sense if you're closer to the equator and your days stay pretty close to 12 hrs day and night each.
That's a lot harder to do the closer to the poles you get.
If you're in Iceland you get 4 hrs of daylight around the winter solstice (or the sun doesn't set for almost 2 weeks around the summer solstice) - and you just learn to deal with getting up and going to sleep no matter whether it's light or dark outside.

Amanda's link is very helpful in dispelling myths about DST, from Ben Franklin to farmers to energy savings.

I think DST is a pain and pretty antiquated. The days are going to be shorted one way or another, so some seasonal adjustments are going to happen no matter what. It's not universally observed and other communities seem to manage just fine.

One of the big pro-DST arguments I hear is form teachers, who say that children should not be at the bus stop in the dark. But I think the whole school scheduling issue needs to be revisited. There are many new studies about teenagers being on a different sleep cycle and being completely (and dangerously) sleep deprived because they are getting on the bus (or worse, behind the wheel, falling asleep) at 6:45 AM (and earlier if they have early practices like hockey). The parents of young children are lamenting their kids being awake for hours before the start of school, and being at their prime earlier in the day. Of course it would rock the establishment, but it might make sense to flip the school schedules so the little ones go earlier and the teens go later, but that puts the youngest at the bus stops in the dark if we don't have DST. That said, we all went to the bus stop alone when we were kids, and there were never any parents there. Now I see parents at the bus stop with 6th graders, or driving kids to school. So maybe it's no longer a real issue if kids are constantly accompanied!

Its weird. But I am not going to put an effort into changing, but if you get it on a ballot, I will vote to get rid of it.

Too many other things that need to be changed that I am willing to put my efforts into, and I do.

I would vote to get rid of it if it ever would come up! Between goofing up the sleep schedule and resetting the clocks drives me crazy. I was home from grocery shopping by 8:45 this a.m. The Walmart lady asked me if I forgot to set my clock back. My answer was, "no I just could fall back to sleep (if you really need to know-grrrr!)".

Disagree. I wish it had happened last week or a couple weeks ago. It's been too dark in the mornings. I leave at 6:30 am some mornings and it's been a real drag getting my kids in the car to go to grandma's when it is still dark out.

Looking forward to tomorrow when I will NOT be getting ready in the pitch black and heading to my car at the crack of dawn. Same time, same schedule, but dawn will have been cracked.

How did this turn into a response about something else you are passionate about? That's not what you asked here...so typical.

Anyways, I do not care for it - we weren't like it when it was dark at 530 last night. I would much rather it be lighter later in to the day that in the morning, but that's me. I'd vote to get rid of it if it ever came up.

Don't like it and never have. Makes no sense.

I didn't know it was such an old idea. Years back when they changed it up we were told it was so the kids would wait for the school bus in more light.

We should just get rid of it. I've yet to hear of anyone that agrees with it so how did this happen in the first place

Hate it. Hate having it dark at 5 pm. I wish they would dump it and stop messing with people's biological sleep rhythms.
