If your son completed the pocket knife requirements, what was his first carving?

My son wants to carve a wolf, and my fear is that it's too ambitious. Nevertheless, he is working on it as I type!

What can I do next?

I don't recall, but your son is fantastic! I'm sure he will create the cutest wolf ever. No fear necessary.

It's been a while....my oldest carved a letter opener to get his whittling chip!

My youngest carved a car....like the pine wood derby...VERY SIMPLE!!! Nothing too hard - you know when you take a Matchbox car and lay it on its side? He traced it and then carved. We used SOFT wood.

I wouldn't tell him no! I would ask him to trace it out so he can get an idea of what he's doing! GREAT JOB!!

Let him go for it. Either he is pleased with the results or he starts again on something different.

From what I remember it doesn't matter, they don't get judged on the project itself, it's more about proper use and safety, so let him whittle whatever he wants to his heart's content!

It doesn't matter. The boys are not judged on how well they do their carving but rather on whether they utilize the correct skills and safety protocol. What a great idea! Hope it is wonderful!

Our den will try it in early November for the first time. I'm not involved in the planning, but I'm hoping they can create something recognizable. :) My guess is they will do the fish and the bear that are suggested in the Bears handbook.
