I have a 4 month old son and he has the worst cradle cap... we took him to the doctors and the doctors said abut 3 to 4 months it starts to worse and there is nothing you can really do to get rid of it, it sorta just goes away on its own. Ive tried selsun blue, baby oil, i even tried picking it out with a comb. But doing that made his hair start to fall out so he was bald for while. is there anything else i can try to help get rid of his cradle cap??

What can I do next?

Hi M.... My son had cradle cap for the first few months too. I found that a product called Ultimate Baby Ointment from the Noodle & Boo line worked great. It not only can be used for diaper care, eczema (which my son had too), dry skin, but there is a treatment for cradle cap. You can find this at many fine baby boutiques it retails for about $17 for a 4 oz. tube

Hi M.!

First I'd just like to congratulate you for graduating HIGH SCHOOL! Good for you! A big pat on the back as that is a BIG accomplishment to do with a full plate with a little one. Thank all of that support you have around you too! Good luck to you in nursing school. You sound like a very loving and patient person so I'm sure you will thrive as a registered nurse.

As far a cradle cap, I have tried different things as I have 2 kids and nannied for years. One that worked best was...right before bathtime, I used Burt's Bees Apricot Oil (I'm sure others would work as well), applied generously into the scalp and let it sit for a bit and then gently/softly rubbed the babys head with an adult washcloth. Apply again and repeat and then bath baby as usual making sure to get the hair clean of any oil and rinsed extra good. After bath when you are drying him, you can gently brush the hair with a baby brush but don't try to pick pieces off of the scalp with your nails as this can hurt him. As another person said, give this some time and it will clear up. As your little guys new hair is trying to break through, there is an oil buildup (the cradle cap) but the newer hair is under and when it is cleared up, you will notice much more hair on your little guy. Also, while you are doing this process it is a good idea to always have your son wear a hat when he's outside so he doesn't get a terrible burn on his head from either the oil or new skin that is now exposed. Better to be safe than sorry!!! :)
GOOD LUCK to you!!!

Hi M. - Any dandruff shampoo can burn their scalp. There is a pink comb that works really well for cradle cap. If you let the baby oil soak on his scalp for at least 5 minutes then comb his head with the pink comb, the cradle cap should come off. I'm sure it will go away soon. Don't worry - your baby boy is perfect! Don't do anything if it seems like it is hurting your son!

They also sell some stuff for Cradle Cap. I bought it at Target. It's a Turquoise colored bottle with winnie the pooh on it. The selsun blue won't hurt the baby. Doctors actually tell parents to use it at times on the babies. In fact my twins pediatrician prescribed it for a friends baby. That baby is only 6 weeks old. And also don't worry about his hair falling out. Most babies lose a lot of their hair a few months after they are born.

Ski Kai Borage Dry Skin Therapy for Children - you can google it. It works great! And also stop using any baby shampoos since they are very drying.

Hi
I have heard that you can also use olive oil. I think the trick is to let the oil (olive or baby oil) soak in for a long time. I put it on, put a hat on (or put baby in the bath) and let the head soak for 30 mins to 1 hour. Then gently rub the head with an old toothbrush to loosen the scales. Then wash with Cetaphil ( a non drying soap / shampoo)
Good luck

Head and shoulders shampoo with washcloth!! I swear it works!! Do not pick it, scrape it, just softly rub it in with the wash cloth and rinse it out with water and the wash cloth. Also, do not use oils in any form.

Be patient and allow it time!!

Hi M.,

Don't bother buying anything expensive. A real easy solution is to use Dove soap--my pediatrician recommended it to me and it worked for both my sons after only a few washings! Both my boys (now four and a half years and eight months) had terrible cradle cap and I only needed to use less than a sample size of Dove until the cradle cap was gone. You might be able to get a sample at your pediatrician's office. I used the cleansing lotion sample just a few months ago, but I suppose any Dove soap should do.

I also wanted to say, "You go, girl!" Having a baby and finishing school is not easy, and going to nursing school as a young mother will be even more challenging. You are a great example to many teens out there, and I wish you the best of luck! Have a wonderful future and enjoy your little one! :o)

My 7 months old had horrible craddle cap as well. I ended up putting a massage oil from the company Arbonne and combed it out. I only did it because it did not hurt her. If you pick at it, you risk bleeding. She has a bald spot from that area I combed out, but her hair will grow back =0). If you don't want to do that, then have the baby wear a hat. =0) People can be very rude about their comments with cradle cap. My pediatrician said you never see a 1 year with cradle cap, so it will go away. There is a shampoo that is called sebulux, that apparently can work too. I hope this information was helpful.

I've heard olive oil, as well. My advise is to NOT use the evoo since it's so expensive!1 :-)

And I'm not sure, but don't think you're supposed to use Selsun Blue or any dandruff shampoo on babies, so if you feel the need to use it again, be sure to ask your pediatrician.

Lastly, and most importantly, keep in mind it's not hurting baby--just looks kind a ugly, but will go away in a short time.
