Cooing

My 4 month old daughter used to coo all the time and make other noises and sounds with her mouth. She still makes the noises, but not so much the actuall 'acoo, coo, la, and other sounds'. I was wondering if anyone else had this similar thing go on? Maybe they move past that -- she's learned to make this high pitched squel and some other noises so it seems like that's all she does recently. I was getting concerned because it's not really "talking" anymore and instead just random squels. She's happy when she makes them almost like she just enjoys it. Is this what 4 month olds do?

What can I do next?

Totally normal, they go through phases, they learn a new thing, and completely drop the old. She'll start doing it again eventually!

My daughter did something similair to that alot when she was that age. It's like they master something and then move on to master something else and they don't do the 1st thing anymore. It was like she had to do the squeeling thing all day long, just to make sure she knew how to do it. Then she got bored with that and went on to something else. It was a phase my girl went thru. But she has gotten over that now...

Good luck, I know those high pitched screams get annoying sometimes. Hang in there, she'll forget about them for a while (at least until she's almost 2)

Once a baby learns a new sound, they abonden the previous one and practice the new sound they discovered. That new sound will then become retired when they find an even newer sound. It's all the progression and learning of vowels, constanants and syllables... such a sweet little cycle!.

I went through the same thing - I was so worried that my daughter was not "talking" she growls!!! Which is really funny and very expresive but I was a basket case my pedi assured me at her 6month that she is 100% on track.

Now at 7months we still growl when really excited and make string sof many other sounds -

Sounds like she is progressing just fine to me. (I hope you recorded some of those sweet sounds.) This squealing stage is what I blame for what seems like a partial hearing loss in my left ear. Not kidding! My dd always reserved the shriekest of these squeals for my left ear!!!!

This too shall pass, but be forewarned, TURN AWAY FROM THE SQUEAL!!!

Have fun! Soon she will be saying "NO MAMA!!!"

Oh yes, and take LOTS of pictures, too, cause those sweet toothless grins are soon to be invaded by sharp boney protrusions! Let me know if you want some professional shots of your angel-I am in Keller. :)

Do you remember the joy the first time you did a cartwheel and all you wanted to do was that ... same thing with the sqeal, and the rolling over ... it's their new trick and it's the best thing EVER!

My daughter is 6 months old and did the same thing. My nieces and nephews lost their coo at an early age, too. Our daughter will go through phases of different sounds. Most of the time she moves on and doesn't do old sounds, but every once in awhile she will make sounds that she made a month ago. Some are obnoxious, too. She just likes to hear herself. She likes to hear her daddy make funny noises, too. Sometimes she will shout out and people think that she's upset and she's not - she's just learning what she can do.

These are happy noises, enjoy them while they last. They will be replaced by jabber and eventually words.
