Concerned About Salmonella in Tomatoes

Here's my problem. I make my own baby food. I just made some yesterday with vine tomatoes without knowing that there's a salmonella scare in the news. The news said that vine tomatoes are not affected but cherry, plum and regular may be. I cooked the tomatoes. They should be fine right? They're sitting in my freezer and will be microwaved. Even though the vine tomatoes are supposed to be okay, I can't help but worry. Does anyone know about salmonella and how long you have to cook food to get rid of it?

What can I do next?

Be careful. I won't give it to my child. I would ask pediatricians and ask and ask. Don't give it to her. I am picky about things like that. I am waiting for my mother-in-law get hers grown since she plants her vegetables. PLEASE don't give it to her. I worry about things like that.

Demetra: When in doubt throw it out! You will always wonder and wait and see if your child will get sick. It is not worth it. Good luck with your choice, M. T., Mother of 4

I actually heard that the vine tomatoes were affected but the others weren't.

There was a news clip on NBC news that stated that as long as the tomatoes are boiled, it kills salmonella. Hope this helps.

Vine ripened tomatoes are supposed to be safe, but if you're concerned, THROW THEM OUT! They're not that expensive that you would risk harming your daughter.

Hi. They did say vine tomatoes were not affected. I don't know if you could cook it enough without still being worried about it. When in doubt, throw it out. I think that is what I would do. Good Luck.

Cook them at high heat for 5 minutes. That will "sterilize" the tomatoes.

Hi Demetra,

I would not not feed potentially contaminated food to a small child. The loss of food is exceptable at any cost. salmonella is hard to get rid of. Only one way to be sure you child is safe. Toss it.

I would not use the baby food with the tomatoes. From what I read, even cooking the tomatoes does not rid them from salmonella. hate to say it, but throw it out!
