My son was born with a left clubfoot. He was in cast until the age of 6 months, braces from 6-8 months, orthropadic shoes from 8-9 months, at 9 months has 2 sugeries to correct clubfoot. Now he is 7, has severely flat feet, and I dont know what to do besides good support shoes, he has been thru physical therapy when he was 3-5, and he are seeing a specialist now who wants to see him in a year, he is small and the doctor wants him to gain more weight first. Then he may have another surgery. i just dont know what to do in the meantime. He doesnt like to wear shoes, and when he does he prefers to wear them on the wrong feet.

Hi P.,
I am not sure what the docs will say about his flat feet but I can sympathize. I have very flat feet myself and like your son hate to wear shoes. I can remember going barefoot the majority of my childhood. I find that now in my adulthood that my legs, back and feet get sore after running around shoesless all day. So, maybe try to get him used to shoes slowly.
I can say that from everything I have read New Balance are great shoes for flat feet. They are all I wear because other athletic shoes hurt my feet after a while.
My mother took me to the doctor too as I began to walk thinking soemthing was wrong with my legs. My feet are so flat that my ankles touch and turn it when I stand. He said not to worry that it was only flat feet. I never wore corrective shoes or anything. With the exception of a little fatigue I have no trouble with my feet. I just make hilariously complete foot prints in the sand! :) I hope this helps a little.

Hi P.
I am a physical therapist and am also married to a man with the worst flat feet I have ever seen in my life. I have a couple suggestions. New Balance are very good shoes that I recommend to most of my patients. However, your sons feet may be more "structurally" flat than "positionally" flat. A majority of flat footed people will do well in a supportive shoes because the foot can still be put into a good position. Others, have structural flat feet that can not be put into a better postion. My husband is like that, and your son who has had surgery and history of club foot may also be like that. They do not do well in supportive shoes. The best thing for your son would be custom made orthotics. Unfortunately they are expensive and not usually covered by insurance. These will give him support for his foot without forcing him into a position that his foot can not achieve. I hope this helps. Someone must think you are a strong and patient woman to bless you with these more challenging children. I wish you the best of luck.
