My son is really starting to climb now. Today he figured out how to climb on the coffee table. He is trying to climb on the couch but not yet tall enough. He is 13 months old. Moms of older ones - how did you handle this? I can't remove all of the furniture from the room? Suggestions appreciated.

What can I do next?

There is nothing you can do. They love to explore and to a point it is good for them. I let my son climb up on things that you are suppose to be on like the couch. I pulled him off of the things that are not suppose to be sat on like the table. You would be surprised at what little ones can accomplish. Good luck! Boys can be a work out. D.

OMG same issue going on here. I have a 1 1/2 year old and watch another one the same age. They climb everything. They try to climb the toy box, couch, chairs etc. I don't let them because it isn't appropriate. I let them climb the couch only if I am on it. Since I am more strict about it at home I give them plenty of opportunities outside of the house. They climb at the park, on the stairs coming into my condo, and step stools in the house. When they climb in the house I say, "down please." If they don't listen I take them off what they are climbing and say "no, climbing." I said it ALL the time at first but things have gotten much better so things will improve. Good luck!!

This is the hardest time for parents because our little ones love to climb and explore everything. I kept the main room we spent time in as safe as possible from falls or items falling on to the babies (I babysat another baby with my son at this age) and told them no often. I would take them off what they were climbing on and put them back on the floor. Most children after awhile give up exploring there and start finding other things to explore. I also kept a lot of facinating toys on the ground for the kids to play with to keep there focus on the ground.

You have to realize that eventually your little one is going to get bumps and bruises and they will do just fine. I wasn't a normal nervous first time mom because I had been around other children my whole life and loved to play with the little ones so I allowed my son certain amount of space to explore and climb. You can also purchase baby gym areas for them to climb and crawl through as well to keep there exploration where you want it to be. Good luck!

Nicole,

One of my daughters ( now 5 ) was and still likes to climb. I remember when all my kids were small we would take the cushions off the couch and they would climb on them. Not sure this will help, but just a thought.

I agree with Danica. We also let our sons climb the couch and such. If there are things you don't want them on or are not safe to climb, I'd just tell them no, no, not okay to climb that and take them down again. Once they can climb up something, it doesn't take long before they can climb back down it as well.

Ahhh memories!! My 2nd son loved to climb everything!! He figured out how to open the drawers(even with the child locks on them) nad use them as a ladder to get to the counter. We had to tie our kitchen chairs to the table so he wouldn't push them to the counters to climb on them. We just had to be very persistant with him and tell him no and that he would get hurt. he is now the biggest thrill seeking 7 year old I know!!!
