I am the stay at home Mom of Sullivan (8 months). We recently joined the YMCA and I LOVE taking there yoga classes! It's great exercise, relaxing, and gives me a little time away from my little guy. They have free childcare to boot! Problem is my son is beginning the stranger anxiety thing AND I've been hearing about this woman trying to kidnap kids from local childcare (one was a YMCA!). The Y is pretty careful about checking photo ID for each child and everything. But, I'm still terrified. Part of me says it just isn't worth the risk of loosing my son to get in a work out. Am I being parenoid? Does anyone else use childcare facilities at a Y and been comfortable with it? Please help--I'm desperate for a moment to myself, but after seeing the news TERRIFIED of loosing my child.

What can I do next?

We actually use the SAME YMCA that this "almost abduction" happened at. My daughter goes there while I'm working out 2 days a week. If you heard the news story they had someone from the Y on and she described all the safetey precautions they use. I'm ALWAYS asked to show my ID when I drop her off and pick her up. (To make sure they match both times) If you let it scare you, you will never get anytime to yourself because you'll find yourself questioning everyone. Other parents obviously trust the staff because look at all the other kids who are in there when you drop your child off. Good Luck!

YMCA has two types of childcare. Hourly drop off so you can workout and regular daycare for working parents that send their kids M-F all day.

The childnapper was trying to take a child from the YMCA's regular daycare center kids that are there M-F all day, not the center's where you drop them off for a hour to workout.

In order to take a child from the workout/ child care drop off sites the intruder would have to check in at the front desk and then go onto the daycare and everytime I've walked into my ymca they hound me to check in, no ID no entry and then again when I drop my daughter off at the onsite hourly drop off and always check ID and double check my daughter's bracelet everytime. My duaghter is 5 and says Hi mom and they still check. They are very thourough.
