My daughter is 3 1/2 years old. She took a pacifier until she was 2 1/2 and I got rid of her bottle when she was 1. She started preschool in August. She has started a couple months ago picking the middle of her lip and biting her fingers and sometimes her whole hand.. Occasionally i will find her chewing on her toys. I ask her to stop and when i look the other way she is back at it. She is still not potty trained and for the most part every day is the same so i don't think it could be stress but I just don't know what to do!?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So it has been a few days she is still chewing. I tried to give her sugar free gum but she didn't understand and proceeded to eat 3 pieces of gum and ask for more.. But i did get her like a teething ring a turtle and a fish and i have to say she has been chewing on them rather then her hand and i notice she isn't chewing on her hands as much.. So we will see where this goes!! Thanks for all the advice!!

It sounds to me It could be some sort of anxiety that she is showing through the chewing of hand and fingers. Did you talk to her teachers to see how she is doing? Does she participate in the activities they do? I don't know, but to me that is a symptom of stress or anxiety.

Something is affecting her nervous system, the most likely thing is a mineral/vitamin deficiency. Infections can also affect the nervous system.

Vitamin b, liquid drops under the tounge twice a day will help. Make sure she gets some b6, b12, in the complex, and some b5 in there as well. Vit b is depleted in those who eat a good amount of sugars and carbohydrates. It may be good to try to cut some carbs back and do more meats/ veggies.

Magnesium (also destroyed by high carb and sugar diets) also supports the nervous system, (low MG means increased adrenaline) and is usually very low in most american diets. Magnesium citrate is a quick absorbing form. A product called kidcalm is available online that gives dosing suggestions, or you can get MG citrate (or MG malate) at the health food store. These products can cause a loose stool, you just cut back the dose a little until they get used to it. I would also do an epsom salt bath 3 x a week. (2 c of salts to a warm bath, soak a half hour) before bed to calm the child and impart a bit of drowsy. (After she stands up in the bath rinse the epsom salt off or she might itch)

A third support for the nervous system is water- nerves run on hydro-electricity. The body is set up in such a way that if you go into any kind of dehydration, even slight, the water that normally supplies the nerves , skin and colon starts getting redirected to vital survival organs like the brain, which is 85% water and MUST retain that amount. Hence, dehydrated people get "nerves", may want to chew on fingernails, lips, pencils, get headaches, edgy and cranky, etc. Put a pinch of IODIZED sea salt in the water to help with absorption.

Another possibility is low iron, but DO NOT give iron supplements without a clear test of deficiency, because overdose of iron is EASY to achieve in young children and quickly lethal. Anyway, people who are anemic will chew on ice like crazy. They also have pica, which is the desire to chew/eat odd things. Sometimes bacterial infections in other parts of the body will cause anemia- because Bacteria syphons off the host's iron- it needs it to survive and replicate.

I beleive another thing that can cause tension in the nervous system is a yeast overgrowth in the gut. Cutting down the amount of milk taken can greatly help this. Yeast LOVES milk. Also there are other things the health food store can recommend for yeast . Xylitol is a sugar that we use- it is a 5 chain birch tree sugar, meaning yeast and bacteria eat it thinking they can, but then they can't digest it and die. This tastes surprisingly like sugar, It has NO aftertaste like fake sugars.

Heavy metal buildup and parasites can cause nervousness as well. But I would start with these above and see if you make any leeway. You may want to try putting "bite no more" on her fingertips to help stop the habit while you support those nerves and build up her mineral levels.

Fulvic acid is another product that can help remineralize. It typically has around 60+ elements in ionic form, which are easily accessable to the cells.
If you wonder if it really helps- try putting a dose on a plant! Watch the new succulent green growth pop out the top in a day or two.

Teeth issues/pain might be another reason for chewing, but probably not as common as the above issues.

I would seek an evaluation with an OT certified in sensory integration also called sensory processing. She is looking for more proprioceptive input to her body and the biggest way children get it is to bite things like shirt, nails, objects. An OT can design a home program to get her more appropriate input to satisfy the needs of her central nervous system. Asking her to stop will make her more anxious. Also cranial sacral is the bomb to move her sphenoid bone.

This is NOT anxiety!
There is NOTHING bothering her!

This is because of one thing only
" The Pacifier ".
She has had it in her mouth for so long that she needs it, it is a habit.

For my first child I gave her the pacifier and took it away at about 3 years old. That was one of the biggest mistakes I could have ever done was to give her a pacifier. My daughter has been chewing her nails and always has to be touching her mouth or chewing on a straw. And if I'm not looking it could be anything else. I made the decision to let her have sugarless gum.
Needless to say I have to buy lots of sugarless gum for her to chew on.
My daughter has NEVER had a cavitiy - so the sugarless gum is ok.

Please don't let anyone tell you that, something must have happened to her and that's why she does this.

I would never give another child a pacifier in my life.

Oh and get ready for her to be sick alot, because she touches everything and then touches her mouth.

I tried that special nail polish for people that bite their nails but I didn't keep using it because of the harsh chemical's in it. I find that gum is better.

I wish you the best.
Good luck.

Her cranial bones are misaligned- what she is trying to do is align them-
Check with the International Chiropractic Pediatric Assn for a referral, or send me a note and I'll give some direction.
Don't ask her to stop- she is trying to handle a physical problem.
best, k

Hi L., both my boys were shirt collar chewers, I did not seek treatment, made it clear I thought it was gross, they both grew out of it, a brief phase somewhere in the neighborhood of 1st grade.
