Do you have a gas stove/oven? It may be natural gas coming from there... You can have your gas/electric company come out and diagnose the smell...

A few months ago, the weirdest thing happened to us. I entered the kitchen and smelled a chemical/wire burning smell. It got stronger, then a light haze of smoke appeared. After calling 911, having the fire dept over, waking up the kids and getting them out of the house, etc. we attributed the strong smell to the refrigerator. An element in our refrigerator caught on fire and burned. Since your refrigerator is an appliance that is constantly running, you may want to check it. After we had the part replaced (a start relay?) I called Sears and filed a consumer report stating the problem. Sears will then file a consumer safety report for other consumers who may have the same make/model of the refrigerator.

May be it is a skunk? Get someone under your house to look.

Do you keep your household cleaners stored in your kitchen and if so, what do you use?

HI Patricia,

If you cannot find the source, you might consider visiting your local fire station and asking for advice. A similar thing happened at my parents house. I called the fire station and a bunch of firefighters came to the house only to find out it was a bag of moldy oranges near the back door. A little embarrassing, yes, but it was a lot better than me worrying that my parents might have had a gas leak of some sort (it oddly smelled a little like natural gas).

Good luck, and I hope you are able to find the source of the mystery odor.

Take care,
L.

I smelled gas not too long ago and called the gas company. It was only in the kitchen and got worse when I ran water.

The gas guy measured my garbage disposal and said something had mixed with something and created it. I run my disposal often and never thought of that. He said he sees it a lot.

He did check the rest of the house and outside lines and all was ok.

Just a thought... I never thought it was my garbage disposal.
