Can Breastfeeding Mom Use a Hot Tub And/or Sauna?

My baby is going to be 15 months and I haven't had to use breast pads in awhile due to leaking. I only nurse him 3 times a day now. Still, I wonder if I will leak if I go to the spa and get in the hot tub and/or the heated rooms. Nothing super hot, but the mellower temps. Any thoughts? Thanks very much!

You might want to pump first for a few reasons one you will leak and two so the baby has food ready when needed, due to heat issues and leaking out.

Just go and have fun! You deserve it! I never had any problems with leaking in those conditions, and you might, who knows...but it's only breastmilk. Just grab a towel and wrap up if need be...you'll fit right in!

After reading some responses: unless your child is not eating solids, which they certainly should be at this time, a reduction in milk won't be problematic. If you are worried about burning the baby (never heard of that one!), just wait until your body temp cools...I'm assuming you are not taking the baby to the spa with you?!

I used the hot tub at our local gym while breast feeding and didn't have any problems. If I leaked, I didn't notice because my top was wet already. Since you are down to three times a day anyway, it is not like you'll be nursing your son right when you get out. Enjoy - you deserve it!

M.,

I teach swim lessons at my local YMCA and get this information from my mentor: whatever you do you will leak just a little bit in the pool/hot tub. It's a given. Being a lactating mother you will leak a little bit any time you hear a baby cry, it's a natural response.

I'd talk to your doctor first but I don't see any problem with you wanting to enjoy some warmth.

There is no reason why you can't go into the hot tub.

I was told... when I was breast feeding..... that an extreme hot shower would make my milk hot and it had been known to cause burns to the baby. I thought that was rediculous but then I read about it somewhere.
Hot/heat will make you expell milk. I would think that if you can keep enough in so that the baby won't starve and you were out for a long time (time enough to let your milk cool before feedings) that you should be ok. I would do it by trial and error but only if you could do it and be out long before the feedings.
