I think coffee, tea, soda are okay for the caffeine amount as long as you aren't drinking like 10 a day. I would stay away from the energy drinks though as all the extra stuff in them. Also diet drinks as those have aspartame too.

alot of energy drinks only have the amount of caffeine that one cup of coffee does, however alot have other ingredients that might not be good to pass on to the baby. many of them do state not intended for use by pregnant or nursing women.

I would say NO! I think the 1 cup of coffee in the morning should be it. What else is in energy drinks anyway...tons of caffeine, tons of sugar...I would bet your baby would be bouncing off the walls & very irritable if you drink these.

Your baby is a newborn....
ask your OB/GYN or the Pediatrician....

you should also research how LONG it takes for caffeine to leave the body....

Energy drinks... also has other stuff in it... ie: herbs and what not... that is NOT standardized nor is it really known concretely, how it will affect a newborn or breastmilk....

Energy drinks are so new to the market that I don't know if any long-term studies have been done to determine the effect on a nursing infant. I always prefer to be safe than sorry, so I would avoid them for sure. Good luck with your tiredness! It won't last too much longer :o)

Hi A.,

I would save those drinks for when you are finished breastfeeding as some have caffine, but most have guarana which is a natural extract from a plant in South America. Brazil especially is selling guarana drinks. But guarana is made of guaranine which is identical to caffeine. They use it to stay up hours on end for concerts etc. That said, let's just say the only effect is loss of appetite, then your baby might not eat as much, start losing weight etc. Generally the same effects you would not want baby to have from caffine is going to be an issue with the enenrgy drinks.

Best to save a treat for a celebration after you are finished breastfeeding. Even though it seems like forever sometimes, it is really only a moment in time that you get the special bond while nursing. Enjoy both...both in their own time.

Peace,

No, not o.k....just remember everything you eat/drink is being passed through to your infant, you don't want them to experience the awful effects on their small and fragile system. Caffeine is a stimulant drug that easily passes through the placenta to the developing fetus and is also transferred through breast milk, and can have devastating effects on the baby. So pregnant and breastfeeding women should never drink caffeinated beverages. I personally would even avoid the coffee. Go to your health food store (or online) and get some Organic India Tulsi Tea (it is caffeine free extremely healthy for you, and many who were coffee addicts switched over to this with ease), it tastes great, many flavors. Keep your baby healthy with everything you consume.

I would have to agree that its not the caffeine that is worrisome, its the extra junk, the herbs that could be a problem for baby. Most energy drinks have no more than a cup of coffees' worth of caffeine in them, so thats not the issue, its the other stuff.

I would drink another cup of coffee or drink some tea there are plenty out there and are safe while nursing. I have BF all 5 of my kids and drank soda instead of coffee.

I would try one and see how your baby does... I would try something like XS that is not packed with sugar & caffine, but has more vitamins for energy and a small amount of caffine. Good luck!

Caffeine does transfer to breastmilk. I rarely have caffeine because it makes me a bit jittery. The every so often when I do have it and then breastfeed, I notice a change in my kids too.
