Bloody Nose

My daughter who is 2 years started having bloody noses! She got one on Friday and it has been kind of on and off all weekend. She woke up this morning and had blood all over her face. This was the first that it has been that bad, usually it is just in her mucuos. I THINK what she is doing is picking her nose after it clots and the clot is coming out. Any suggestions on how to keep her from doing this so that her nose can heal?
A bit of history - my sister had to have her nose burnt to stop it from bleeding so frequently and my husband also gets regular bloody noses.

What can I do next?

I'm sorry about your daughter's bloody nose incidents. As one of the other moms has already said, talk to her doctor about it. It can be pretty scary, though, especially if it flows freely. Usually a change in climate, humidity, heat, congestion, picking of dry "boogies", or rambunctious playing brings on a bloody nose for my oldest son (5-1/2). He just had another bout of bloody noses this weekend. I believe he was about 2 or 3 when they first started. Our pediatrician wasn't worried. A little Mentholatum under the nostrils works great to help ease the dryness in his nose. (Just make sure it doesn't get inside the nose.) My husband used to get them growing up as well. So, stay calm, if she's scared help her laugh, pinch the top of her nose bridge to help stop the flow, and plug her nose with little toilet paper "rockets." :) Wishing you all the best!

I used to get them alot- I think it had to do with the dryness in my house and at work- Maybe a humidifier would help and also the vaseline does help.
good luck-

My son is very prone to nose bleeds. At first I thought he was picking his nose but even if it gets bumped it bleeds. With the weather it could be that she has a dry nose too. As always check with your doctor on your next visit. I don't think it's anything to get overly concerned about.

Put a touch of vasoline on a quetip and rub it in her nose, especially along the inside of both nostrols. Also pending what your pediatrican says, she may need some iron. Iron helps clot the blood.

Good luck

My husband and I have had bloody noses our whole lives and the one thing that we have found to help is to rub vaseline around the inside to keep it moist. Even if she picks it, it should still help a little. Just a tiny bit goes a long way! It has worked for us and our daughter. Good Luck!

I don't have experience with bloody noses, but my niece started to get them when she was about 2. Like you we all thought she was "picking" her nose. After about 6 months of nose bleeds on a regular basis they took her to the dr and her nose had to be cauterized. She was fine for a few months and then they started again. My SIL took her to the dr again and they did some allergen testing. She is allergic to a bunch of things! They put her on a couple of different things and then her body would get used to that medication and she would start to get nose bleeds again, and finally she had to go in for shots every week. Not saying yours has allergies, just letting you know that could be what is causing all of the problems. Good luck!

When I was about 4 or 5, I had frequent nosebleeds. It turned out I was allergic to feather pillows, and would sneeze until the blood vessels in my nose burst. Even though we found relief by replacing the pillows, I continued to have frequent nosebleeds through college.

Somehow I just gradually outgrew them. My brother had the same problem and had to have his nose cauterized. I don't know if that's a favored treatment anymore, you should check with your doc. Possible allergies should be investigated.

It's more of an inconvenience than a real medical threat. Above all, don't have her lean back when she has a bleed. Have her sit up straight with the nose pinched until it clots, and of course she'll have to learn to let the clot set for awhile. Good luck.

Check to see if she has a scab in her nose.If you can not see take her to a clinic and have a nurse look for you Sometimes a young childs nose membrane is too thin and they can give you a cream to put on it to thicken it a bit.Good Luck

Some people have thinner membranes so when "picking" or scratching it can cause it to bleed easier. Also, what I found with mine, they were low on Vitamin A and Zinc. So on a bloody nose day, we'd be sure we had green vegi's for dinner. The kids will tell me they had a bloody nose and we need spinache for dinner. The one who rarely gets a bloody nose is the only one who doesn't like spinache LOL. Our oldest daughter, when she got one, she'd open a can on her own, eat about half the can for a snack and the rest for dinner. Always worked. It doesn't have to be spinach it is just a very high source for vitamin A. Most any of the green vegi's will work. Even a salad. Hope this helps.
God's Blessings

http://www.medicalnewsservice.com/fullstory.cfm?storyID=2... If this links does not work look for the Keyword QR powder

"09/09/2004
Medical Break-Through That Stops Bleeding Instantly Now Available Over-The-Counter

QR powder, used by ER, oncology, hematology and ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctors, as well as sports trainers, instantly forms a scab once the powder and slight pressure are applied to the wound's blood. The covering that's created stops the bleeding in seconds and protects the wound from infection. For nosebleeds, a special applicator is included to load the QR powder and roll it into the nasal cavity.
The powder, available in nosebleeds, cuts/lacerations and kids products, is classified in the "safest" category (with bandages and gauze) by the FDA and was clinically tested by an FDA-approved independent lab"

I found about it because I get two allergy shots at a time for different things! And we were eating at a favorite sandwich shop and in the middle of eating my nose profusely ran and it took over a minute to stop it. It was a side effect of a anti-steroidal Allergy treatement nosespray that is not unheard of "side effect". The next week or so I was headed for Europe! And could not imageing being 1000 feet up in the air and having nosebleeds then. I rarely get them btw. So I researched for days and found the link above.
I did try it once I think but since stopped that medicine they "magically" went away. But before this? Vaseline (though should not be taken internally) if you know where VASELINE comes from. Think of Gasoline Vasoline. It is a extra product of the oil when it is extracted from the earth.
Sincerely,
SC
