My 13 month old daughter has a black/gray tinge to her teeth. The doctor didn't seem too concerned but didn't explain it either. Should she see a dentist? Has anyone else had this happen to their child? Thanks!

Hi M.,

This happened to my daughter as well and around the same age. We eliminated her vitamin drops for a few days and it went away immediately.

Good luck!

Hi, M.! I work in a dentists office and I can tell you that baby teeth are sometimes referred to as "milk teeth" because they are so much whiter than adult teeth. I don't know for sure, but gray baby teeth doesn't seem normal. Has she been on any medications? Or were you during your pregnancy? Has she had any trauma to her mouth or teeth? The dentist I work for suggests a child's first visit be by age 1 or when the first tooth pops through whichever is first...so it's time for her first visit anyway. I would make an appointment with a dentist just to be sure. Problems with baby teeth can affect permanent teeth down the line, so better to have her checked out just in case. Good luck!

I went through this with my daughter also. I found out it had to do with her being on an antibotic. But it did go away a couple weeks after she stopped the medication. Another mom told me that it could be due to vitamins. It might now look good, but I don't think it's a big deal. To ease your mind call a dentist. That always helps me calm my fears.

One of my girls had a purplish tinge to one of her teeth when she was about 2. Since it was a baby tooth, the dentist was not worried about it since she had no pain. All of her teeth now are white--or slightly off white anyway. As the previous poster mentioned, antibiotics can change the color of teeth.

That happened to my son but it was because he fell and hurt his mouth. I took him to the dentist and she was not worried about it. She said he hit a nerve that is why it turned black. Since it was his baby teeth I think that is why dentist do not worry too much.

This happened to my friend's daughter. She took her to a pediatric dentist and the discoloration was due to decay. They had to file down the teeth and put caps on them (she was knocked out for the procedure). Since they are just baby teeth it's only a temporary thing but better to be treated before the whole tooth decays and affects the root. At least that's the way I understood her situation to be.

Do you have well water? This started to happen to my son and I took him to the dentist. He was given fluoride supplements to help with this. A good cleaning was also done. I know it seems young, but call a good pediatric dentist and they will help you. Goodluck!

Something similar happened to my son. I took him to my older son's dentist and he said it was from him having high fevers and dismissed it. The color continued to get worse and it turns out it was decay (most likely from nursing at night and weakened enamal from fevers) and he has monthly appointments at a pediatric dentist for temp fillings until he's old enough for caps. :( We have an extreme situation but don't delay in taking your daughter to the dentist to be sure!!

Same thing happened to my little one. He was taking iron supplements, and that was one of the side effects. But it did go a way and I do brush his teeth.

Has she been on antibiotics? I have heard that some can make the teeth gray. If not, and/or you are very concerned, do consult a dentist.

I believe Antibiotics and to much Flouride can discolor your teeth.

My daughter had the same thing happen, her doctor took her to a dentist (in same clinic) and we were told to discontinue her flouride drops. When we did that the discoloration went away.
