Birth Control Pills Before Endometrial Ablation Procedure

Hello,

I am scheduled to have an endometrial ablation this March. My doctor put me on birth control pills for 4 months to "thin" the lining of my uterus in order to have the procedure be effective. She said this is standard procedure. I haven't been on birth control for 5 years (husband had vasectomy), and I think my body is not tolerating them very well. My problem is after being on the pills for 2 1/2 months, I have experienced the worst yeast infections for over 4 weeks! She said it is probably due to me taking the pills and my age (40) and my body/hormones changing. Well, I really don't think I can continue with the pills for another 2 months and keep feeling like this from the yeast infection. Has anyone else experienced this and what did you do? I really wanted the procedure, but I don't think I can stand having a continuous infection until I can go off the pills!

Also, has anyone ever heard of or been prescribed Lysteda for heavy periods? I've heard this can help with that problem, but have never heard of it before.

Thanks ladies!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies! The reason for being on the BC pills is to thin the lining of the uterus so that the ablation will work. She said that this makes the procedure more effective. I have decided to go off the pills and postpone the ablation until I can get a grip on the yeast infection. I've done the monistat and prescription meds (diflucan), but I believe the pill is what is contributing to the re-occurances. I can't go through feeling like this any longer, so the procedure may be out of the question for me, unless she will try it without me going on BC again. I'm looking into the Lysteda as an alternative.

go to your looking health food store and get probiotics. take them daily! They work wonders and will help with the imbalance. maybe do a regular dose of a yeast infection cream to get it under control then continue taking the probiotics. good luck!

I had the ablation done in June, my obgyn didn't put me on any birth control before the surgery, unless you count the IUD.

The procedure didn't work for me, but the stats my doc gave me was 75% of women will completely stop with their periods, 20% will have spotting once a month and 5% will go back to the way they were before the ablation (I've been bleeding and spotting for almost 21 months).

Ask her what happens if you go off the BC because of what its doing to your body?

I personally can't take any form of BC because my body rejects it and it makes me very ill. But I had no problems with the IUD.

never heard of bc pills as "standard procedure" before an ablation... i haven't used bc in YEARS and had an ablation a little over a year ago. i am very uncomfortable with the risks of hormone therapy, and my OB never mentioned that as a precursor to my procedure, and she is a VERY "by the book" type of doctor. if you are not comfortable with it, get a second opinion or talk a little more to your current physician.

Progesterone replacement can help with heavy periods and you can get that at a health food store. I had the ablation done and never had to go on birth control pills. Mine worked great!

I had my ablation done 3 years ago and was not put on any kind of meds prior to the procedure. My ablation didn't work, I had it a second time and still no luck. Don't let that scare you....I'm one of the 1 in 1000 kind of thing. So, I ended up with a hysterectomy. Wouldn't change a thing!!!
I'd be extremely concerned, tho, if the pill is causing the infection or something else. I would definitely get on an anitbiotic or whatever you need to get rid of the infection and am surprised the Dr hasn't done something to help rid it.
Why is your appt so far away? I saw my Dr and 2 weeks later had the first one, 3 mo later, the 2nd one and then the hysterectomy.

I had my ablation about 6 weeks ago and I had to be on Provera (progestin) for about 10 days before my procedure. I was in the PMS part of my cycle already and I think the pills held me there. I didn't have any trouble with yeast though. I do know its normal practice to use hormone therapy prior to the ablation though. I'm curious as to why your procedure is so far away. Can you maybe move it up a little? I had an appointment with my doctor and my procedure was scheduled for 3 weeks later, and I was told not to start the Provera until 10 days prior.
