I own a fairly expensive iron that irons my clothes so nice. But, recently something stuck/burnt on the bottom of it and it is transferring to other clothing. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way of cleaning the bottom template of an iron without scratching it and ruining it? I wasn't sure if I was supposed to do something while it was still hot or wait till it cools down, any help would be appreciated.
same thing happened to me and i tried a dryer sheet (i think i read that suggestion online). anyways, with the iron off and cold, i just rubbed the sheet on the iron and the gunk came right off!

nail polish remover to get the gunk off then wipe with plain water while the iron is cold.
Have you tried WD-40?? It takes a lot of things off without ruining it. Let me know how that works or if it does.
I dropped my awesome iron on the carpet a few weeks ago and got some of the carpet stuck to it. Nothing worked expect filling it with water and turning it to the highest setting and putting it on the highest steam setting. Put a towel under it and wipe it a few times on the towel while running the steam and it should wipe right off.
Rowenta makes an iron cleaner. You can find it anywhere they sell Rowenta irons -- I think I've seen it at Target.
I hope somebody can give you a homegrown answer to this. But meanwhile, go online and see if there's something called Faultless Hot-iron Cleaner. It used to be sold at hardware stores. I used it frequently when I was starching my husband's shirts (he likes the permanent press ones now, happily) and the spray starch would do a job on the soleplate. But it was good for more than starch. As I recall, it was a little pricey, but one tube lasted a long time. You might see if it's still around, if you can't find something better.
