ok, so I made some crockpot beef stroganoff the other nght that came out pretty darn good. I was telling my friend about it, and she asked if you can substitute crean of chicken soup instead of the cream of mushroom soup. For some reason she gets a tummy reaction with mushrooms but would love to try the recpe.
So all you mamas out there, have you ever substittued the cream of mushroom soup with something else and have it taste good??
Thanks again!!

I have a couple recipes that you can use either/or....buut I've never made beef stroganoff. I'd probably try cream of celery.

I agree with the making it from scratch. Betty Crocker has an awesome recipe that is pretty simple to make. I am pretty sure it includes, hamburger, onions, garlic, salt, beef broth, flour (to make it thicken up) and sour cream. It is one of our favorites at home. I bet if you went to bettycrocker.com and looked in their recipes it would be there.

Good luck

Encourage her to do a stroganoff recipe from scratch, so she can omit the mushrooms. You don't need mushrooms to do this recipe, as it doesn't change the flavor that much. Authentic stroganoff never had onions or mushrooms in it. Just (sour or heavy) cream and beef.

See:

or this skillet version which uses only sour cream and no mushrooms etc.:

Yes she can use cream of chicken. It will be a bit different but I second using cream of celery soup. Very good in crock pot recipes. Also, cream cheese for the stroganoff. Allrecipes.com has some very good ones.

any cream soup, goes in any cream soup recipe...with just a slight change in flavor usually!

I'd say cream of celery so it doesn't get a chicken taste to it.

I hate cream of mushroom soup so I use cream of potato soup and then add fresh sauted mushrooms at the end. I know this sounds crazy but I also add a small amount of red wine at the beginning. It adds a lot of flavor and cuts the richness of all the creamy stuff.

Years ago when we got our first microwave it came with a recipe book. One of the recipes that I still use was stroganoff. It specifically calls for cream of chicken soup. It also uses chip dip/sour cream. It gives it a special flavor. I won't use another cream soup! Likely you could use any cream soup.

Since I hate mushrooms I always use cream of celery, works great!

I HATE mushrooms and refuse to use any kind of mushrooms in anything I make. So I always substitute the soup for something else. Cream of whatever does the trick!
