Hey here's an idea I tried and was happy with,
Find a beauty school near you, they have supervision...dont worry. I did this about a year ago and have been going ever since. Only costs about 25.00 each month and I am very pleased. Be very verbal about what you want and dont want and you should be fine. If you think they are too nervous ask for the supervisor....you'll be fine! Best of both worlds...ooops one more think...leave plenty of time...they work very slowly! : )

I use... I don't even know what I use. My experience with anything out of a box has worked out pretty well for those grays! Depending on your hair type/color, you may have to use trial and error until you find something you love. My point is, and the others ladies know too, you're not alone in this. It's kind of free-ing, isn't it?! Congrats on letting go of the salon and still finding a way to spoil youself, all while keeping some extra moolah in your pocket! :)

Welcome to the DIY club! I too made the switch at Thanksgiving... my hair dresser went on maternity leave and I did it myself with surpisingly good results. $10 every 6 weeks or $200... easy choice.

I have dark blonde hair (almost medium brown I guess) with definite "red" undertones. My hair doesn't hold color well, but I have found that in going "darker" and using the L'Oreal "Exellence" cream color is easy and long-lasting.

I use Clairol's Perfect 10. It's usually on sale at Walmart or CVS for about $9. It covers gray well and is fast. My only concern with it is I seem to have roots showing about a week or two earlier than when I used Nice n Easy.

I love the Garnier Fructise. It's what I've been using for the last few years.

I have used the $3 (Loreal maybe) box color from Dollar General and every time I get soooo many compliments on the color of my hair and people cannot believe I do it myself! I have done the medium brown as well as light blond. I'd say go every couple months and get your hair cut and then maybe 3x a year get color at a salon. it's understandable to cut things out, but you still have to save/spend on yourself from time to time. You can get just as cost effective of results by going to Sally and getting a GOOD quality developer, hair dye, washable plastic gloves, bowl and brush ... to get what you need the first time it will be about 30-40 but monthly you are only buying your dye (6/box) and every 6 months developer (10-20) ... I use the L'oreal to cover my STUBBORN greys ... and you can talk to the gals at Sally ... it is cheaper and easier than the box in the long run.
