Hello Mamas! My husband and I would are thinking about taking our kids to Galveston. I've heard stories that it is still under consrtuction due to the Hurricane and the water is really dirty. We are planning on being at Stewart Beach while we are there. Has anyone been within the past couple of months? Was it worth it? Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

My mom was just there this last week and I just wanted to add that they did go down to the Strand and there were quite a few shops open. They stayed at the Galvez and she really enjoyed it. She said everything along the seawall looked pretty good.

I just went there a couple of weeks ago. There is a lot of construction but there is also a lot of new stuff. The beach was same galveston beach. Nothing spectacular but it was clean. The kids had a great time.

My sister lives there while attending the UTMB. She reports that the island is fine, and that it was a very high priority to the island's economic health to have all the tourist attractions repaired and ready for the summer. The beaches are fine, but occasionally you will find rembrants of the hurricane, like the Mermaid Peir is still under construction (cool), and the Flagstaff Hotel is still vacant and gloomy (ominous). I'd say go and have a good time. It's a good opportunity to show the kids to respect the awesome power of nature, too.

My family, friends and I just got back from Galveston last weekend. I have a 2 year old and she had a ball in the sand and water. There is still some construction, but it was not widespread. As far as the dirty water, the Gulf is always dirtier than other bodies of water. There was no seaweed and not exceptionally nasty parts of the beach that we saw. In the past few years, they've actually shipped in decent sand, so the beach is nice to lay on or play in. I'd suggest it and your daughter will have a blast!

The water at Stewart has always been a little murky. And the undertow at that beach is down right dangerous. Many people have drowned there because of the undertow. If you decide to go there, be aware of the tow and be careful.

We just went a couple of weeks ago and it was beautiful! There is very little construction. There are clusters of spots under construction, but they aren't as frequent as one would think. We stayed about 10 miles further at SurfSide City and loved it. Then, we drove up to Galveston and went to our fave restaurant there, and went to that beach. Both beaches were clean and just fine.

Hey C.,

We just got home from Galveston this past Friday. If you are staying on the seawall most everything is back up and operational. You can get some really great room rates right now because they are encouraging folks to come back. I don't know anything about Stewart beach or where that is located tho.

For a pre-holiday weekend it was not at all crowded. I was surprised about that because it seemed like a perfect time to go. The beaches/water in Galveston has never been the pretty clear blue like you see in the Carribbean but the water was clear enough for us to see a black tip shark, some sting rays, jelly fish, hermit crabs and dolphins nearby. We saw a LOT more sea life than I've ever seen there before.

We also did not go to the Strand area. I heard that a lot of those shops were still not re-opened yet. A good deal on rooms right now is at the historic Hotel Galvez. We stayed there three nights and enjoyed it. But they aren't super kid friendly even tho many families were there.

We really enjoyed our visit because it wasn't as crowded and the prices were right.

Hi C.
We were there two weekends ago. Yes, there is still some damage and places being repaired but overall it's in good shape. The beaches were a little dirty for my taste but I'm used to the pristine beaches on the west coast of Florida so I wasn't all that impressed with Galveston as a whole (it was our first time there). But, the kids had fun so it was a fine trip.
