A friend of mine asked if I could help her organize her basement. The main issues are the kids and parent's shoes on the floor and toys that are unorganized. Anyone have suggestions on "containerizing" these items and helping the kids stayed organized?
thanks so much!

No matter which system you choose, make sure it's easy to use. I'm a big fan of open bins as it's easier to toss everything in quickly.

I did my whole toyroom in the 'Trofast' storage system for Ikea. They're bins that slide in selving units. I love them!!

If she can afford it: Elfa from the Container Store. It's easy to install, it changes easily with your needs, and it's great quality. (having said that, I can't afford it myself! But if I was starting a project like that, I'd start there. They have free consultations, too.)

Hi-
For shoes, you can organize them into hanging shoe holders. THey keep shoes off the floor and looks very neat and organized. You can get them for cheap at Walmart in the container/organization section. A sample of what I mean is here:

If $ is tight, then create several boxes or crates for each family member, and at the end of the day they can throw his/her shoes in the correctly labeled box.

For toys, many people use the toy organizer, which is a series of bins on a shelf, Toys R us, Target, and Walmart sell these:

Good luck!

PJ, I am a big fan of hanging shoe holders on the backs of doors. and in some cases on the outside of closet doors. We have them on every bedroom door in our house and also in the living room on the inside of the door. we use them for the following shoes, hat/s mittens, dvd's, art stuff pencils, crayons, markers, video equipment like cablewires, connectors, controllers, gameboy games, small action figures, jewelry and accessories, husband has hats in one they are great for lots of stuff. walmart has one that has different sizes of the pouches so bigger stuff can fit on the bottom. also a big fan as someone else suggested before of the open bins for bigger toys. just be careful and clean them out regularly as they tend to gather weird stuff in the bottom. randome puzzle pieces broken toys etc. good luck
