Any Tips for a Let down Problem?

I never had a problem with let down difficulty until recently. My 6 week old seems to be latched on right and I'll be calm & relaxed but still no let down. Sometimes it will take up to 5 minutes, but sometimes it just won't come. Even when I try to pump nothing will come out! This happens a few times a day. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

try to make sure you are well hydrated that was always the problem for me. And oatmeal every morning with brewers yeast and flax sead and wheat germ worked great. I always noticed better milk on the days I ate that for breakfast. But drink lots of water.

I am not advocating alcohol but I drank a 1/2 a beer (Guinness stout)every night makes the milk richer and ending the day drinking Mother's Milk tea is helpful as well.
Sometimes we just have too much going on to relax.......maybe cut back a little on some activities and force yourself to take a nap more. Breathe with your baby a little helps to get in tune with each other.

Keep drinking a ton of water. Never have an empty glass, always keep it full. Also, go to a health food store and ask about Mother's Milk, or Mother's Love with fennergreek (sp?). This is all natural and you put a couple drops into any drink and let down will occur in the next 20 mins at most. It is amazing! Good luck!

Make sure you are drinking LOTS of water. Breastmilk is mostly water so you need to drink all day! Oatmeal is great for milk production but if that is OK you just can't let down, try a half a beer. :) There are some good tips at http://www.kellymom.com

Here's a thought for you to ponder...
Is your milk letting down while you're getting ready to nurse or maybe a few minutes before-hand?

Give it time. Your body is still getting used to the whole thing. I breast fed my daughter exclusivly, and I can tell you, your body is having hormonal ups and downs which can affect the let down mechanism. So just keep with it, and let it come....Your are doing the best thing....relax. I used to have a cup of chamomile tea when I sat down to nurse and for whatever reason, as soon as I started to drink, my milk let down. And enjoy!

Have you tried masssaging your breasts a few minutes before feeding or pumping. I had the same problem with my daughter now 1 1/2. I began to massage and warm my breast a few minutes before feeding. I wolud also let the bathroom steam up and sit there if possible for a few and massage them to help speed up the warming process. Good luck and congrats !

If you want to build up your milk suppy you need to pump at the same time everyday. I would pump in the morning, once in the afternoon and once in the evening. You have to be consistant. I had to train my breast that way so that I could have enough milk for my kids when I was at work. I also would call the lactation nurse at the hospital for advice.

Hi M.!

I struggled with milk production due to polycystic ovarian syndrome but I never gave up. First and foremost-DO NOT BEAT YOURSELF UP OVER THIS! I put myself through so much. Relaxing is good but if you are feeling anxiety then its not really working. Try not dwelling on the milk and eat oatmeal every day. You can also order great products from Mother Love in Colorado. They really helped me through. If your baby is gaining weight then you are producing enough for her. You may be letting down and not realizing it. Call a lactation consultant and if necessary you can order a medication from Globaldrug.TV called Domperidome that stimulates milk production. That is of course a last resort and please dont do it without consulting a lactation nurse first. Good luck and dont give up. My son is 2 1/2 and still nurses at night.
