Moms, I have come for your wisdom once again! I just moved into a house that has a more than minor, but not severe, ant problem. The owner and I are going round and round about how to fix this. They are saying the only way to get rid of them is to have an exterminator come in and spray and dust??? I am totally against this because I have 2 children (one of them being a 5 month- old with a heart condition) and a dog. I need any suggestions or advise on any exterminators you know that are environmentally friendly and/or any remedies you know that can be done on my own.

What can I do next?

Go to any hardware store and get the Tarro ant traps. They are about 4" long and you cut the end off so there is just a tiny slit that the ants crawl into. They take the stuff back to the colony and poof they're gone! I had ants every year for 5 years until someone told me about Tarro. It is wonderful and if you keep it up on you counter near the sink or where ever you are seeing the ants, they'll be gone in a matter of a few days! Great stuff!

I like HotShot Kitchen spray--it's less harsh of a chemical. The other part is to keep dirty dishes out of the path, i.e. eliminate the food source. There may be some home remedies that are "green" out there too.

We always start having ant issues this time of year when it gets wet and rainy outside. My husband buys Terro at the hardware store. It comes with these little cardboard squares that you place near where the ants enter your house (or where you can see 'em streaming) and then you put a couple of drops of the Terro on the cardboard. It's really gross at first because the ants LOVE it and swarm all over it; they then carry it back to their nest and it wipes 'em out within a matter of a day or two. If they come back, use more Terro. You can put the little cardboard patches just about anywhere and animals and kids will usually leave them alone.
Having an exterminator come out is expensive and will only work for a brief while. Once it gets wet and rainy, the ants will come back.
Good luck!

I get ants in my house every spring. I use Terro ant killer and it works great. Oh, and it's harmless to animals. My dog ate some of it. Their website tells you about it. You can check out the website at http://www.terro.com/guide-ants.php. I've bought it at Walmart, Home Depot, and even the grociery store once.

Hi N.. I feel your pain! We use Tarro inside, and spray outside all around the base of the house. Good luck.

try vinegar and lemon on counter tops, taro in certain spots (underneath sinks), and spray the outside of the house with spray you get from Lowe's or home depot. Oh, also use the inside version of raid around the baseboards of where they are at the most. I have also heard of using pepper and strong spices in small cracks to deter ants.

boric acid works. put some in a jar lid and hit it like behind your microwave and under your sinks where no one can see it, the consume it and carry it to their colony and it kills them.

People swear by the Tarro ant stuff, but it didn't seem to do all that for us, but it may be worth a try. I do however, swear by the regular $5 can of Raid ant/roach spray. It is not so environmentally friendly, but you can spray it outside around your doors and windows that way your little one isn't exposed to it. We only have to spray once a season and it works like a charm!

Have your Husband spray on the outside of the house. Then up high around window ceils put some pure cinnamon oil ,so the kids can't reach it, so it dont burn their eyes or mouths if they touch it. and Good Luck. Chemical free.

We have used Terro with lots of success in the past too but it is mainly for sugar ants. We have also used ORTHO Home Defense and it keep all the creeping crawly things away. I don't know how environmentally friendly it is but you spray it around outside along your foundation and inside along the walls so it is not like the kids will be playing in it.
