Ann Curry

I have been a fan of Ann Curry for....as long as she's been on national tv. I applauded her rise to co-anchor for The Today Show.

Does anyone have an opinion of her ousting...or leaving....?

Seems to be 2 camps. I am firmly in the "Shame on NBC" camp. Where do you stand?

Through my circle of family/friends, the consensus seems to be: the older moms loved her, & the younger moms thought she was too serious in her interviewing. It's funny that Ann's seriousness is exactly "why" I loved her....a real reporter asking in-depth questions. :)

I also believe, if anything should be changed, it should be the format of the programming.....

Looking forward to seeing your responses! Thanks.

So What Happened?

I'm glad I'm not the only Matt hater! I was surprised, though, to see how many members do not watch a.m. tv. Soooo, who's representing the demographics? Hmmm. Thanks for all of the responses. Peace to all.

That's too bad, I always liked her.
Though I have to admit I quit watching the network morning news programs years ago. I can't get past the fact that the men dress like professionals and the women all dress in sleeveless colorful shifts with kitten heels and major spray tans. It's SO weird and distracting :(

I quit watching them years ago. I never liked Matt Lauer either. He's a pompus little twit. I don't need all the fluff stuff morning shows do. I want to hear the news and find out what is going on in the world. I don't need to know fluffy had puppies in a gutter. :)

I have never liked Ann Curry, I didn't find her serious, I found her very robotic. It seemed like her questions regarding people's reactions and feelings were always strange, like she didn't understand how emotions work. "So your husband was lost at sea, was that upsetting?"

But I suspect it's because she wasn't well suited for the job and will do much better in another position, so I think ultimately she'll be much happier. That being said I think NBC handled it horribly, letting gossip and speculation take over. She is still a person, a very visible employee and they should have let that all happen behind the scenes.

is she leaving? pity. i used to love the today show and thought she was perfect as the hard news correspondent. but whatsername (the perky one) had a much better rapport with matt lauer. i don't think it's anyone's fault, just the way it clicks.
that being said, i haven't watched the today show in years. it used to be a good informative news show but it's turned into a 'women's' show and not in a good way. when they started focusing on recipes and fashion i turned it off.
i'm really angry that we can't get good news in this country any more. how sad is it that we have to look to the BBC and even al-jazeera to get a less-biased perspective on american news?

I haven't watched the Today Show in probably 15 years. Husband would turn it in when I was getting ready for work. I have never been a fan of Couric or what's his name, but I ALWAYS liked Ann and thought she should have had more screen time, back then.
I don't watch now, so I don't know if she has changed her style at all. But I always liked how she projected herself, serious, intelligent, but not overly dramatic. Like a real person, who isn't full of herself basically,

It is the first time in decades their ratings fell from first place. Ann Curry is the only change.. She is not a good match for middle America.

I like and respect Ann Curry, but she is a bit 1 note for morning TV. She is a great investigative reporter.. She is quite brilliant.

Her voice seems to convey everything sound sincere or dramatic.. when not everything on the Today show is so dramatic.

I cannot stand Matt Lauer.. He sounds so condescending.. I am sensitive to word formations, pitch etc.. And these types of voices every morning.. can drive me insane.

I do better with the anchors that can vary their expressions.. That can get involved with the conversation and reporting, without making it seem like they themselves have already formed their own opinions. EVERYTIME.

Being on television every day for 3 hours is a tough gig. That right chemistry either happens or it doesn't.. Local shows are hard enough, but National.. it takes that one perfect personality..

Ann Curry will be paid quite nicely.. She loves her reporting and traveling.. She has now experienced the drudgery of morning talk show.. Se can knock that off of her list.

I always liked Ann on the news; don't watch the morning shows so I'm not sure how she did on Today. She strikes me as a very classy lady and she was very good as a news anchor. I have a hunch, and the gossip sites have been swimming in this hunch, as well, that Lauer was behind her ousting. Seems he was looking for a new coworker to bed. Hey, I may be wrong, but how many times has his wife tried to divorce him now?
Hmmm ...

Regardless, I think this was handled very, very poorly by NBC in terms of the leak. I'm sure the cool $10 million will help mend her wounds. Best of luck to Ann.

To be quite honest, I really don't care one way or the other (just like the Jay Leno versus Conan debacle). She has great prospects, and will come out just fine.

I don't even watch morning tv anymore. If I turn the tv on in the morning the kids will just morph into zombie mode. I go online for my morning news, or just watch local news in my bedroom while getting ready for the day.

I have always liked the Today show, but this will definitely change my opinion. I really like Ann Curry. I also liked Meredith and Katie! I think they should have given her more time! Plus, isn't Matt leaving soon? They'll have a whole new crew--that's a big gamble!

I love her. She's a great journalist and frankly I think that the Today show wasn't newsy enough for her. She belongs on Dateline. Also, she's half Asian so I liked seeing someone on the news who represents an Asian culture as there are no other high-powered newscasters I can think of who are Asian.

She walked away with 10 million, and to a job that I think better suits her. Either way, I say "good for her." She'll be better off where she can play to her strengths. I don't think this will get her down. The woman they replace her with, really isn't going to relate much better.

I don't watch morning TV anymore either . . . but I used to love Ann Curry back in the day.

Dumb move on NBC's part imho - then again most "news" is actually reality TV now-a-days. Hence why I no longer watch it.

It's the nature of the beast. Television news is like any entertainment industry. Once you reach a certain age, it doesn't matter how "good" of a journalist you are, it's time to carousel (refrence to sci-fi movie Logan's Run). And heaven help you if you've been around long enough to be eligible for a raise. In this economy, no media outlet is paying big bucks for any on air talent or decent programmming. It's why reality shows are booming. Cheap talent and cheap to produce...fills air time. Sustainance costs too much. Anne should take it as the highest form of praise and a compliment of her acheivement as a "real" journalist (not so sure about the young talent coming up these days). I'm sure most in this business know this but still hope they can avoid the ax. Kitty Couric is the only one so far to do the impossible. She must have some blackmail pictures on all of the higher ups in television, because I don't think she's that good, but like the Duracell bunny, she keeps pounding that drum.

I SO agree with you, S.! NBC was dreadful is the way they handled this issue. I've always watched "Today" but haven't enjoyed the changes in the last several years: describing the stories coming up a million times before they were finally on, cooking and fashion segments, the fluffiness of the stories, etc. They introduce us viewers to the anchors and want us to care about them - then they do something like this (and it goes against the "family" like Ann mentioned). Her previous role as the third member of the team suited her well - travel and harder news reporting, I hope she goes back to doing what she loves and is good at. I'll be switching to "Good Morning America!"

I dont have TV and normally dont read media that would account for this type of stuff.....

I knew it would come the minute she took the spot. NBC is like the any Ballet Academy......They have their star at the top for years....i.e. Katie and the other lady.........And when you cant fill the Prima' Ballerina spot...You start whacking heads off the ones who dont fill the role.

I really liked her and her reporting style.

All Mass Media needs to change the way they do things.....From reporting the real issues(or TRUTH as it is also been called), to how they have given everyone momentary ADHD with the way they yo yo stories and events in our lives......

Kinda hard to follow what is important....they focus so much on stuff like who is delivering that message.

Sad.

I didn't mind her and was surprised they let her go so abruptly. It seemed she was all over the place from the Today show to Dateline. Obviously, the line of work she is in is pretty fickle, so if I were her, I would take the $10 million being offered and run with it. I read she was still going to be a field reporter which she has reportedly claimed is what she loves doing most. So in a way it's kind of a win/win situation for her.
My husband on the other hand never liked her. He thought her voice or mannerisms were annoying for some reason. I liked her just fine!

I really admire Ann Curry and enjoyed the fact that she could enjoy herself and be silly but shift gears be serious and hard hitting. She's a very classy lady. We need more journalists like her. You can read that as "she's a dying breed of journalists" aka a real journalist and not one who's out to create hype for the sake of it. She's handled this entire ousting with dignity and grace.

All I can say is that if Savannah is promoted into her place, I may have to write a "very strongly worded letter." ]-:((

I LOVE the Today show and watch it almost every morning. I have always loved Ann and was disappointed when Meredith got the old spot. I have to say, though, that I did not think Ann was doing a great job when she did finally get the coanchor position. I felt her interviews were very awkward. She does better at the human interest pieces than hard-hitting news in my opinion. I was not surprised that she was moved to another job.

It wasn't a good fit for her. She and Matt didn't have chemistry. They are offering her a ton of money and a foreign correspondants job. I'm sure she will be back on network tv soon and won't have to get up and be perky at the butt crack of dawn to do it!

I am far more upset to have lost Conan to cable, where I can no longer watch him, because I do not like any of the alternatives. I could care less about morning TV because I don't watch it...too busy with the children. I agree, though, that it wasn't a good fit. I actually took a 45 minute long survey when she first started as morning anchor on her performance...they really asked detailed questions about every aspect, so they were obvious doing the research to find out how people would like her as a replacement.

I don't watch morning TV so I can't really comment on her everyday work. On the radio this morning though they played her "good-bye" and between her and Matt Lauer it was just an awful train wreck. Someone of her experience and stature should have had more dignity than to become a blubbering fool on the air, and he just should have shut up completely. It was so painful to listen to - I can't even imagine what it was like to see on TV. Really, it felt like an SNL skit. Just awful.
