Hello Moms, I recently got my hair heavily highlighted and now that I am home, I feel that I need to lighten my brows. My eyebrows are dark brown and I need to lighten them to match my multi-blonde hair tones. Does anyone have any advice on how to dye eyebrows at home? Thanks

I would have this done professionally at a salon. Dye and the eye area do not mix very well! It's better to have someone else handling the wand.

Good luck!

J.--I have been a licensed hairdresser for 14 years now and I am telling you not to do this at home. First, it is okay for your eyeborws to be darker than your hair. Give it some time or ask someone you trust if it really is as bad as you think it is. Second, eyebrow hair is different that the hair on your head, it wont react like regular haircolor and more than likely, if you try to lighten your eyebrows you have a good chance of turning them orange. Most important is the chance of ruining your eyes if you get any product in them. I would recomend having a professional do it for you if it needs to be done.

J.,

Several years ago I, too, highlighted my hair heavily. My eyebrows then looked too dark. I have always used Merle Norman cosmetics. Back then, they had a product for eyebrows that was similar to a colored mascara. I just purchased the shade closest to my new hair color and applied the brow color every day as I would mascara. It looked very natural and as my hair color faded, I could adjust my eyebrows to match. You might attempt to determine if there is still such a product on the market.

Just an alternative suggestion.

I did the same thing a few weeks ago. My stylist recommended a dark ash blonde permanent dye (I used a revlon brand that was like $2 at walmart) and told me to apply it with my finger directly over my eyebrow and leave it for 5 minutes (using the bottle can lead to the chemicals running into your eyes). After 5 minutes, don't rinse, wipe dye away with a damp cloth. If 5 minutes wasn't enough to create the desired lightened effect, repeat, but never exceed 5 minutes at a time. I ended up having to do it 3x before I felt my brows looked light enough. I didn't suffer any burning or staining and it definitely did not run into my eyes. If you're careful, it really is easy. Good luck!

I've had my eyebrows & lashes dyed before in a salon. It ended up to be $60 (very pricey salon), & I thought I could do this. I went to Sally's Beauty Supply & purchased the dye kit there, but it was very watery! It was very difficult to manage!

So tonight I'm trying a different technique: I'm using a cleaned off mascara brush to put real hair dye on there.

You aren't really "supposed" to dye eyebrows, but we do in the salon all the time, and master make-up artist Kevyn Aucoin does it as well. Go to a salon for the best results, but here's some tips. (I think Sally's may even sale an eyebrow color kit).

Just mix a bit of color just a shade or two lighter than your natural brows, you don't want your brows to be the same color as your highlights (it'll look weird), even most natural blondes have darker eyebrows.

Put a bit of vaseline around the skin surrounding your eyebrow hair. Take a dry mascara wand (for thicker brows) or a q-tip and brush a small amount of color on at a time. Be sure you brush the hairs up and then down to get all the sides of the hair, so you won't be left with splotchy parts.

Depending on the color directions, you only need to leave the color on for a short time, maybe 5-10 minutes or so. Then, take a warm, wet, soapy washcloth and wipe the color off.

Of course, be careful not to let the color get in your eyes (it can cause serious reactions, as well as blindness), most creame colors don't drip anyways, if your color is drippy at all, then don't even attempt it.

Also, if you have very sensitive skin, mixing a packet of Sweet 'n Low in the color will help numb the skin so it won't sting as much.

Keyvin Aucoin suggests in his book "Making Faces" to use facial hair bleach on the brows. Just be sure you scrape off some of the creme to check the color every few moments, and then cover the spot again to check the color (b/c you don't want to end up with orange brows). You don't want to leave it on for too long, b/c it could cause some of the hair to break off.

When the color is ready (shouldn't take long, just watch it), wipe it off with the wet, soapy cloth, follow with a mild anteseptic and a bit of hair conditioner to keep the brow hairs supple again.

I just use the dye I use but I would not bleach them as that will turn orange if you own hair is dark. It is very hard to lighten hair with it is really dark. Be very careful not to get anything in the eyes. When they do it professional they use a vaseline with sticking on a protective sheild. G. W
