Advice on Creating Halloween Costumes

For each costume:

Cut 2 same size circles out of large pieces of cardboard (think old refrigerator box). Take some quilt batting and put some over the cardboard and wrap dark brown/black (oreo colored, lol) fabric around it and either staple the edges or use a glue gun around the back side edges. Do this for both the "top" and "bottom" cookie pieces. You can then take more batting, and wrap white fabric around it and glue it to the "inside" edges to make the "filling" (but leave the areas at the neck and waist areas unobstructed). Then, once those pieces are all dry, you can staple 2 strips of elastic on either side of the neck "opening" area to connect the two parts of the 'cookie'. Your child just puts it over their head like a walking board sign.

If you want to make the "cookie" part large, you can cut circle openings on the front cookie for your child to stick their arms through, so they can carry their treat bag. :)

I would dress them all in white and then take two large peices of cardboard, paint them oreo color, write oreo on it and then attach it to them over the shoulders. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I'd probably start with white hooded sweatsuits. Get the sweatshirts kind of big so you can add some batting to make them fat. Then you could either cut big circles cardboard and wrap it in batting or get that thick foam and cut the circles from that. Either way, wrap it in black or dark brown felt.

You can get the super strong velcro and sew a few strips on the front and back of the sweatshirt. Hot glue the other side to the cookies.

I would use foam, you can get it at the fabric store. It is great because you can cut it to whatever shape you want. Once it is the shape you want then cover it with felt or fleece. You can choose to back it with cardboard if you want but without the cardboard you will be able to keep it flexible so the kids can bend and move around easier. You can also use the foam covered in felt or fleece for the white inside as well and make the entire cookie costume sandwich over each kid and secure with velcro. Put the kids in white sweat pants and shirts to match.

If you want to get real creative, you can buy the felt with sticky backing and make the oreo design on each side as well. That is getting pretty detailed but fun anyways.

Ok - so here is one idea. You need sheets of foam - like the foam you see for a mattress pad. I am sure you could get it at Michaels or Joann’s. You will need to cut out 2 circles the same size for each costume you are making and paint them black. Then the tricky part (kind of)...since I do not know the ages or sizes of your kids....you are going to want to make suspenders/straps that will go through each circle and hang on the shoulders - one on each shoulder. Then, you can determine if you need one layer of foam or two for the white creamy center. The center you will cut out circles - smaller than the first two so they can be just a bit off set like a real Oreo - but you won't need the center of the center. They will be more like half moons so that they fit on the sides of the kid’s bodies. You will paint these white and you could glue or double sided tape them to only one side of the cookie - you still need to be able to get it on them on Halloween night, so you can't secure it to both sides. For the other side, I would put a piece or two of Velcro (sp) so that it can be fastened securely and not just floating around while they are walking around.

For final touches, you could make them wear a pain white shirt and white leggings or shorts. You could also make them hats by cutting out smaller circles and painting them black and white - you'll just need to cut a small portion out of the center of the bottom cooking piece so that it can sit on their head and put a ribbon through the bottom cookie (before you glue the pieces together) and then you just tie it under their chin.

Anyway - I am sure there are 1,000 ways to make this type of costume. This is just one way. Sounds like fun!!! Good luck!
