Has anyone tried accupuncture? My husband is considering it for his headaches and migraines. He's tried a plethora of different pharmaceuticals over the years and nothing has really helped so we're starting to think we need to think outside of the box. Does anyone know if regular insurance covers the treatments? Any information you can give is appreciated!

My friend's daughter had a migraine that lasted with no relief for almost 4 years. They tried everything to help her. Acupuncture is what finally cured it and it has not come back. That was about 4 years ago.
In my case, my migraines were mainly caused by an undiagnosed hole in my heart that eventually caused me to have a stroke. So it wouldn't hurt to see a neurologist and get that ruled out.
Someone else posted this same question not long ago, so you may want to check it out.

Most insurance does not, but some do.

It matters a lot WHO you go to for acupuncture as not all acupuncturists are the same. Many chiropractors can do acupuncture, but they just get a certificate in it and you may or may not get good results. The certificate doesn't take long to get.

My brother has a 4-year degree in acupuncture and he is very good. He knows so much more than my chiro does about it, I went to her a few times for it and had some positive change but not much. Once he got his degree I went to him and he did so much MORE than she did and I had instant results! My brother explained that his classes went much more in depth than a mere certificate.

So get a good recommendation in your area! Sometimes you need more than acupuncture, headaches can be the result of a lot of things. He may need a mixture of treatments.

Good Luck!

Love it! My regular insurance covered it fine, with a copayment.

I have tried accupuncture for various reasons (back problems, pinched nerves, etc.) and I highly recommend it! Insurance coverage for this will vary from one company to the next. Some pain specialists that provide over (usually) covered services will bill in such a way that insurance covers it. There are some doctors that specialize in 'natural' therapies.. that may be covered as well.

Good luck!

Our insurance covers acupuncture but I go to the school here and get it done for FREE on Wednesdays. The ONLY catch it's a first come first serve situation. I have to try to beat the "early bird" people. They seem to make a day of going to get acupuncture and going to get dinner afterwards. It's kinda fun because I get to be the youngest person in the waiting room. That doesn't happen much anymore.

I looove acupuncture. It is super relaxing and I have learned a LOT from them. Not everything HAS to be treated or "cured" with a pill. I'd get it done daily if I could because it really helps me with migrains and knee issues.

Acupuncture is very effective for calming nerve inflammation. My husband has used it and it has been a life saver for managing pain due to back problems (pinched nerves due to crushed discs). It has been pretty miraculous for him; I'm not the sort who normally likes to think outside the box for medical care, but I have seen the results of acupuncture and it's amazing.

My husband has had a longtime issue with cluster headaches, and we did ask his acupuncture doctor about it. His doctor said that for migraines, acupuncture is not a very effective treatment (unless the root cause of the migraines is nerve inflammation-related). He referred my husband to a neurologist, who prescribed Zomig. Zomig works a little differently than most of the migraine meds on the market; if your husband has not tried it, he may want to ask his doctor about it. It worked like a charm for my husband.

There are many doctors (MD's) who are licensed to do acupuncture. As long as that doctor is in-network for you, then chances are it can be covered by your insurance. Different plans cover different types of "alternative" treatments. It's worth it to call your insurance company and ask.

I wonder if maybe chiropractic might help your husband. Many times, structural problems can lead to all sorts of issues including headaches. I'm prone to headaches, and for me, as long as my body is in alignment, the headaches stay to a minimum. Just a thought.

I have tried accupuncture for infertility, but it did not work. It does help you to relax though. Insurance does not cover it. I was talking to my chiropractor about it the other day and it cost $50/hr. She was wanting me to try it for my asthma. Wanted me to come in twice a week for a while. I told her I couldn't afford it. Has your husband tried a chiropractor. I use one and it helps me when I have headaches. Good luck. My insurance will cover the chiropractor.
