Hi,
I hav a 8days old baby girl. Last few days she makes noises like trying to clear her throat. I thought it was normal until finally she shotted out yellow mucus like fountain. She stopped responding. Seems like she stpoped breathing for few seconds with white pale face (i didnt think it was blue yet). Although then she started responding little by little we decided to rushed her to hospital. The doctor says its normal and she s too young to hav mucus yet. She said its probably i overfed her or didnt burp her well. After that i took care her feeding schedule n how much milk/ breastfeed n burp her. Even change the milk incase she allergy w/ the old one. I went to other doctor for second opinion n she also says its normal.
Now my baby girl started to make noises like clearing her throat again, sometimes look like she's choking. And am really afraid that she'll hav another episode.
Any mom has suggestion?

What can I do next?

Hi, N.:
Some babies have more mucus than others. When the baby starts choking on the mucus put the baby on your arm like a football. Lower her head and pat her on the back so the mucus will drain out like gravity.

You can put a vaporizer around her to make the mucus thin. You can hold the baby like a football frequently and pat the baby's back. You don't have to wait until the baby's mucus builds up.
Just a thought.
Good luck.

Just keep an eye on her. It is RSV and Flu season. I agree with Dori it can be reflux but there again keep an eye on her to make sure she isnt aspirating the milk. Good luck

I used to volunteer in a well baby nursery and we had to suction mucus out of the newborns all the time. I don't think that ER doc knew what he was talking about. Call your pediatrician. I know mom's hate to "bother" their pediatrician, but that's what they are there for. My own pediatrician says he call's his kids' pediatrician all the time and he IS a pediatrician. :-) Call!

My baby boy was taken back to have his mucus sucked out when I was about to leave the hospital after his birth. He had LOTS and I was glad they did it before i would take him home...but the other moms are right, try to find out if it's reflux, if it's mucus is really easy to solve, for reflux the doctor will probably give meds. I hope she gets better soon!

Definitely take her to the pediatrician, if nothing else for your peace of mind. I made the mistake of listening to an ER doc when my son, who was having breathing issues, was brought in and he actually was pretty sick even though the first doc just shrugged it off like I was an overly-concerned mom and he ended up being hospitalized for awhile.

If it is mucus, you can use saline drops and a bulb to help suction it out before it becomes an issue. I don't know about putting the drops in her mouth, but you can put them in the nose and they will work their way down to the mucus in her throat. Good luck but trust your gut. If something doesn't feel right about it, keep talking with the pediatrician.

The throat clearing can be a sign of GERD/reflux. My son had it and was diagnosed very young, about your girl's age. Bring her to your pediatrician. Maybe the doctor at the hospital was unfamiliar? Other signs my son exhibited: intense crying and back arching after feeding. If she has it they will probably put her on Zantac or a proton pump inibitor like prevacid (one neutralizes acid the other inhibits its production). Opt for the latter - it's been awhile, but I understand it is better. Also, baby probiotics! They really do help relieve the symptoms and help their digestive systems to mature.
Best of luck!

She could have reflux. Very common.

Make sure that if you bottle feed you are using a slow flow nipple, burp her well, keep her upright about 20-30 minutes after a feed, could try using a crib wedge to help keep her from being completely flat in bed:

Their little system are still very immature and this can cause the "food" to back up very easily.
