I am 6 weeks pregnant and on Monday came down with a horrible stomach pain. It is in my upper stomach near my sternum and ribs. It is constant and driving me crazy. I have had a little nausea but nothing severe. I called my OB and the medical assistant didn't think it was anything pregnancy related and that I should see my GP. Has anyone had anything similar to this? Any suggestions? I have tried Rolaids and tylenol with no relief. It feels like I ate Thanksgiving dinner twice with this terrible pain. It even hurts to touch that part of my stomach. Help please I think I am going to go crazy!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all the great advice. It was my gall bladder and I had a stone blocking my billiary duct. Just got home from the hospital today after having surgery and an ERCP. I just have to cross my fingers that everything goes well with the pregnancy. The OB and the surgeons all felt it was the only thing that could be done otherwise my health would have been in danger. Without your responses I wouldn't have thought about the gall bladder and not sure how long it would have taken me to see the doc. Thanks so much!

First don't by scared when I tell you this but I want to share what happened to me. Please go and see your ob right away. Have them check your blood pressure and protein in your urine. You also need to tell them whether you have had any bleeding gums. This was my first sign and I ignored it. When I had my first daughter, I had severe upper gastric pain. It turned out that I had a condition known as HEELP syndrome. It is a severe form of preeclamsyia. Your liver enlarges and your platelets drop. I don't tell you this to scare you but to make you understand that you need to see your doctor right away. This is a pain that does not go away and if not taken care of can cause stroke or liver rupture. Please go and see your doctor right away. I never had any signs of high blood pressure or protein but was forced to stay in the hospital for 5 days when the doctors could not diagnose the problem the first time I went to the hospital.

It might just be horrible gas pain, but insist on seeing the OB. I found that the nurses I talked to at my OB's office over the phone seemed to always have the wrong answer for me. When I went in to see the doc, she always said something different from what her nurses were saying. Stick to your intuition. Pain should be addressed!

just wondering if your diet is changing with all the new hormones in your system. try to lighten your diet to more fruits and vegetables and less heavy, rich foods. try to eat less and kind of graze throughout your day. just an idea.

I would see GP. But tell them about your preg. I once had gall bladder issues (subclinical) very early in pregnancy. They went away after I miscarried. Yours sound more severe...whatever it is.

Hi K.!

That sounds like gastridis to me which is the inflamation of the stomach. Yes, it does feel higher than a typical stomach pain but is very painful. I would go to your regular Dr. too and have it checked. Not sure what they do when you are pregnant. I wasn't pregnant when I had mine and they put me on prescription Zantac because the dose was so much higher than over the counter. You are right though...Rolaids and Tums don't even touch it.

Good luck and hope you feel better!

STOP TAKING TYLENOL - IT'S TOXIC - can you find a different OB? someone who won't pay attention to you when you are in pain doesn't deserve your time or money because they aren't taking care of you - speak to the doc personally and complain about the nurse who referred you and if something isn't done IMMEDIATELY switch - don't let them intimidate you - it's your baby and your life at stake.

The first thing that came to mind was gall bladder which is common in pregnancy. I had a lot of problems with mine when I was pregnant with my twins. Luckily it went away after delivery. My girlfriend had to have hers taken out. I definitely would talk to your GP since you OB doesn't seem too helpful (I would be rethinking my choice of OB's at this point.)

The pain I had at about 6 weeks was severe cramping but sounds like your pain is higher up than that. I'd see the GP to get checked out.

I would find a different OB immediately. An office who would take a phone call about this and not ask to even examine you is not a good office. Find a different doctor asap and be examined. I also think it's a good idea to check your urine protein as another mom suggested.

Don't take no for an answer. You know your body. If you're hurting - GET HELP!! You own it to your little girl, your baby and yourself.
