My 5 week old daughter had me guessing last week if she was really smiling at me. Now when I talk to her in a high voice and smile her mouth opens in a big old grin for a few seconds and coos....I looked up infants smiling and they say it's a myth that newborn smiling is due to gas...they smile when they hear something familiar...usually when they are asleep...but she smiles at me when she's awake now. Do you think she is really smiling at me????
My girls were both 4 weeks old when they started really smiling at us. Oh, I can't wait to have another baby!!!!
Babies know the sound of their mothers voices (and dads). They hear you when they are in the womb so when they are born they react to your voice. My daughter smiled at me when we were still in the hospital and I am sure it wasn't gas.
Yes, that is when my first daughter officially smiled at me. I knew it was real because she was awake in her crib and when she locked eyes with me she had a big grin.

The trickier one is getting them to laugh. My daughter would not laugh for me for anything. My husband FINALLY got her to laugh (was a lot of work) one day--can't remember? 5 months? I couldn't get her to laugh by myself for at least 2 more months after that. But when she did laugh is was a "gut laugh" not a giggle.... LOL
My younger son smiled the day he was born. That smart little bugger figured out that if he smiles people keep talking to him and he loved being held.
For those that think you can't tell if they are really smiling it is easy. Don't say a word, no smile. Say anything smile. They are reacting to your voice and smiling.
Whether the smile indicates actual happiness well that can be argued but it definitely was a smile in reaction to the voice.
Of course. My son was smiling in his sleep at about 4 weeks or so. Now at almost 3 months, he coos like crazy and gets the biggest smiles. Yesterday it almost sounded like a giggle. Oh my gosh, where does the time go?
I totally think babies can smile at this age. If they can grimace when they are in pain or cry when uncomfortable, then why wouldn't they be able to smile when they feel pleasure or are comforted by Mom or Dad's voice?
I know that my son smiled at me when he was just hours old in the hospital. I do think your baby is smiling at you.... such beautiful beginning of a lovely bond. Congratulations~

My daughter first smiled when she was 3 weeks old and everyone told me it was just gas too, but she did it so often and at appropriate times that I knew it wasn't just gas and it was actually her being social. Everyone said she was the most smiley baby they'd ever seen. She's 3 1/2 years old now and still a very happy little person and the life of any party.
I wish I remembered the exact week my daughter smiled at me, but I remember it was YOUNG between 2-3 weeks.
She just woke up and I was talking to her and she not only smiled but kept smiling whenever I would talk to her!
Not gas if its a reaction to you speaking to her!
Our daughter started smiling at us very soon after we brought her home from the hospital. I don't believe it's just gas. When you get in their line of sight and talk to them and they light up with a big smile...that is bc they are happy to see you! Yes, I think your daughter is smiling at you!!!
