We started this as a habit when my girl turned 2. I just let her brush her own teeth in the morning while I'm fixing her hair. I figure the nighttime brushing is more important, so I do that one.

They used the toddler training toothpaste in the morning for a while. No rinsing or spitting needed. Wherever they were I handed them the brush, then I could do hair or get socks on or get myself ready.

Honestly and sadly my kiddos are 3 and 5 and we still struggle to do the 2x a day. My oldest has been to the dentist and so far he is pleased with how we are doing. We struggle as well with mornings being hectic and such. Starting a routine is great but again I wouldn't beat yourself up if you miss a few mornings here and there. I am 36 and have NO cavitites :)

When my kiddos were that age we did a non-toothpaste brush in the car before we went into school/day care. I simply kept one toothbrush in the car and before I got them out of their seat, I said "Show me your teeth, I need to get those monkeys in there" and they'd open right up and i'd get a good brush in.
Around 3.5 the classroom teachers had all the children bring a toothbrush and they'd brush after lunch. When that kicked in, I cut myself som slack in morning brushings.
With a school-age child now, however, all of us do a morning brush . . . . most days - LOL!
