Ok so i have 2 question. the first one being i have a 2.5 month old. and his hair is starting to bald n the back of his head from the friction of being on his back. Any1 have any ideas on how to stop/prevent this from happening? Between bouncers, swings, car seats, and sleeping, its hard to not place him on his back.
2ndly, how do u know if your child has reflux. i do sit him up for 30 mins after he eats but sometimes he still spit up. i know that it's normal but what is considered abnormal?
most babies end up with the bald spot on their head, and their isn't anything that can be done about it. Once he starts moving around, the hair will grow back
With the reflux, i was just reading in what to expect the first year about that. if he cries while eating that is a sign. Spitting up isn't a sign. I never sat my kids up after eating. most of the time, they fall asleep, and go into the crib just after eating.
if his hair os balding from being on his back maybe he isn't getting enough tummy time. Even at 2.5 months old they need plenty of tummy time to gain neck and arm muscles.
1- nothing will stop that baby hair from falling out. It all falls out, but I promise it will all grow back in... my kids only had fuzz until they were about 2 years old... they looked silly, but all kids go through it (just not usually as long as mine did, LOL!)
2- All babies spit up. It may seem like he's throwing up a lot, but it's usually not more than a few teaspoons at most. If your baby screams in pain when spitting up or is projectile vomiting, then absolutely check with your pediatrician. Otherwise, everything you asked about seems pretty normal :)

Your baby will bald and it's normal. There's really no way to stop it. Like you said he spends so much time with the back of his head against something. It'll grow back in just a few months, not to worry.
I'm sorry I don't have a definitive answer on reflux because mine didn't have it but I do know this, babies spit up A LOT!!!!!!!! I was shocked at the amount of spit up involved. I would think that if it was reflux he'd have other symptoms and would cry and be upset because he was hungry and it would be painful for him.
Do you bottle feed or breast feed? The doctor told me it is quite normal for a bottle fed baby to spit up their entire bottle from time to time. But breast fed babies rarely spit up at all. My girls were breast fed and neither of them spit up. My nieces and nephews were bottle fed and they spit up all the time ruining their clothes. Also balding is normal, not to worry, the hair will grow back. Both of my girls slept on their stomachs or sides. Never on their back. They were hardly ever on their backs. The doctor told my niece that it is rare for a baby to have acid reflux unless you are giving the baby something to cause it. Hope this helped.
My DD is 4 months, and still spits up a lot. (has since birth) She has minor reflux, but not bad enough to need medicine... Her pedi. says that as long as she doesn't seem upset about it (like she's in pain) and she is gaining weight, then we don't need to worry. As for the hair thing, no helping it.
My baby went through the balding in back of the head. It is temporary. Don't worry too much. Feel free to place him on his belly too. It is great for neck strength and gives him a different view.
Reflux is now used as such a broad term. Most babies have reflux because the sphincter in their esophagus has not been fully developed at this stage. It normally takes 8-10mo. of age before you see a difference (went through this with my child). Spit up is normal, even though it is worrisome. Sitting him up as you are doing helps and have the wedge to elevate him in the crib helps as well. Be concerned with projectile vomiting, loss of weight, immediate spit up, uncomfortable and continuous crying due to pain or burning. Minor reflux tends to improve with baby food as well since it is more solid. My ped. suggested putting a little bit of prune baby food into his formula or breast milk....1ounce of food to 2ounces of milk and that would help.....even at this age. Another suggestion was to mix it with pumpkin baby food. It had more substance to hold in the tummy. Enjoy your baby!
Nothing will prevent the bald spot. Most babies get it. It will grow back in time :D
Spitting up is normal. Projectile vomiting is not. If he's just spitting up, it could be that he's too full or needs burped again or that he ate too fast. Or it could be that he just spits up! As long as he's not spitting up large amounts or in pain, he's most likely ok. Ask the doctor at your next well check.

Both of these things are normal. His hair will grow back after he starts rolling over. It's not a big deal. All babies spit-up. As long as it's not excessive and it doesn't cause him to be cranky it's nothing out of the norm.
All babies need to be on their tummies most of their waking hours. They need to stay out of all contraptions that limit movement. You are not just talking about bald spots and flat heads but about developmental delays throughout their childhoods that they can never get back without intervention for years. Let them develop at the time they are supposed to and make sure they get enough strength in their cores to crawl correctly for 4-6 months. Being on tummy will help strengthen abdominal muscles needed for proper digestion and respiration (reflux).
Yes, agreed with those who say you can't prevent the hair from thinning. Sometimes it's related to the friction, but likely at this age, it's more due to the pregnancy hormones exiting his body and causing hair loss.
Our poor son looked like he was going through puberty and a midlife crisis at the same time because of the baby acne and male pattern baldness from the hormones.
As far as reflux, only your pediatrician can really make that determination. Some babies are just spitters. We had purchased all the rags, towels, cloth diapers in anticipation of having kids who spit-up a lot, and neither did. Literally, our son NEVER spit up, but my sister's kids all did a lot.
So, I'd make a call to the pediatrician if you're thinking it's reflux and have them make the determination.

A little spit up is normal. If it's most of the bottle, talk to your pediatrician.
It's totally normal for babies to get the bald spot, it happens to all of them. Baby fur (hair) is different than normal hair. It will grow back in eventually.
All kids spit up also, sometimes burping them twice will help. Usually when they are as young as yours they over eat a little bit, even if it's just an ounce, the overflow has to go somewhere... and its usually on mommy's clean shirt ;)
Hey, my son has had reflux and i just took him off of his medicine last month. He had bad refulx that he had to try 2 different medications and increase the amount because the originial amount wasn't working. You will know if it is reflux if you read up on the symptoms, you'll say, yup, he's got that symptom and that one, etc. With my son, I knew it was reflux because he would cry or be very irritable immediately after his spit up and he had "wet" burps. And he was spitting up all day long, not just right after his bottle. He displayed the symptoms clearly and then we had an upper GI series done to check for another issue and the acid reflux displayed clearly and immediately. The tech was like, "well, he's definitely got acid reflux." I wasn't surprised and was thankful that he was already on meds. Don't like the idea of giving him meds but I eventually experimented after a while with decreasing his meds. And by 8 months old, I took him off completely and monitored him and he's doing great and now spits up very little and only occasionally, just like any other baby without reflux. He is now 9 months old and still doing great without meds.
I wouldn't worry about the bald spot. Babies lose most of their hair and new hair grows in.
As for the spitting up...lots of babies are just spitters....some not at all and some a LOT.
Is she OK otherwise? lots of gas, discomfort, irritability? You can always discuss with your pediatrician or nurse, but it's possible she's just a spitter. It's kind of like their automatic overflow valve.
Both normal and his hair will grown back! Enjoy not having to tame it and worry about haircuts for a while!! :)
Yep been there for both. My first daughter was a bad spit upper. Even meds didnt work. Just pack yourself an extra shirt no matter where you go.
The bald spot will go away, promise. My 2nd daughter absolute refused to be on her belly til after 7 months. She would lock her arms and legs so she couldnt and just laugh at you if you tried to force her. I think it hurt her when she was little cause her lungs were all the way ready when she was born at 36wks/ That hasnt slowed her down in any other development. Eventually, she figured out it was ok and necessary to crawl and be mobile. she had a bald patch for a long time, now she is 13months and lots of hair.
I would recommend the nap nanny to help with reflux. It saved us with our son, it was also great when he had RSV to help him breathe at night (we even took it to the hospital). Look at the website to find a retailer near you. As for the hair, happens with all babies. Some just get it to fill in faster after it falls out. Tummy time everyday helps. We bought one of those mats but my son didn't like it very much so I ended up mostly doing it on my bed or lying him on top of me belly to belly. Good luck!
