Affording Dance Lessons for My Daughter

A friend of mine has a daughter who takes dance lessons twice a week. She asked me if my daughter (8) would like to join a class with her daughter. The girls have known each other since preschool. They haven't really bonded, I think because my daughter is very introverted. But the mom and I are friends, so I have just accepted that. Anyway, I thought tap dancing or jazz might help my daughter come out of her shell and would be a fun way to exercise. We went to one free Contemporary dance class. I wasn't impressed. The girls just did a...

Baseball for a Child

Ladies, we just signed my son up for baseball and he just turned 5 in December, and is in Pre K, so I believe most of the boys on the team are older than him. The problem is after the game the coach chooses a player to receive the game ball. This is the fourth game they've played and my son, for some reason, has to have this ball. Well, last night they lost the game again and the coach asked them who wanted the ball and most of the kids, along with my son, raised their hands for the ball. Well, my son once again did not get the ball. ...

Almost 6-Year-old Wants a Nintendo DS or a Wii

My almost 6-year-old has been pleading for a Nintendo DS or the Wii, like all his cousins and some of his friends have. My mother-in-law really wants to get him one for his upcoming birthday, but my husband and I are not sure we want him to have one. We're concerned that even if we restrict his usage of it, it will be addictive and he will be less interested in his usual activities --- reading, art, t-ball, scooter riding, music, imaginative play, etc. He's the usual energetic kind of boy but we love that he has a creative and...

Help-my 8 Year Old Is Very Picky About Her Food.

I have an 8 year old that is very picky about food. She either wants something different from what i've made and if not, she won't eat. I can't get her to eat veggies or healthy food. It all started one day that we were at my in laws house, and she almost vomited, ever since then, she is always saying that if she tries something new she's going to throw up. I've tried telling her to try something first, before saying she doesn't like it, I've tried the mother and daughter cook day, where we make somthing together, i've tried to hide the...

6 Year Old Allowance

My daughter is almost 6 years old. She has no concept of money. She thinks that it is ALWAYS available to her. I want to start giving her an allowance, so she can buy her own afternoon snacks at school and whatever toys she thinks she must have. My question is how much of allowance do you give to a 6 year old? What are the task she must do, in order to earn the money? What about deductions, when she doesn't do anything? Thanks for your help in advance. K.

Teen Cell Phone Vs. No Cell Phone

I have yet to see something about taking a stand against cell phones. My son has been asking, actually begging me to get him one (he is 16). We have gone round and round on the issue. He poses a very good argument as do I. I need some additional insight as to why he should and should not have one. He is a “good” teen as much as I can tell but I worry about the TEXTING that gets out of control, the phone calls in the middle of the night or alone in his bedroom, who is calling and how long or often is he chatting with a girl or his...

Our girls want to go for gymnastics. We had them in tumbling when they were toddlers and are showing an interest again esp. after watching the olympics. I've looked on line and am wondering which gym would be better-Texas Tumblers or ASI in Keller. Can anyone tell my what you think of these gyms? I will go by and look at both of them but would love opinions. Thanks so much

Indoor Activities for a 7 Year Old Boy and Two 4 Year Old Girls

I'm watching my niece (4 years) and nephew (almost 7) for a few days at the end of the month. I can't fit 5 car seats in my car, so for the first two days we are stuck at home. The last day my husband took off of work and will take the older kids to a movie and ice cream. I have plenty of outdoor activities but need some indoor activities as we can't stay outside all day since my twins are only 17 months and won't want to. I saw using paper plates and making them into rings to try to ring the bottle and I think that will be fun and I...

HI, our 6 year old son has an IEP and various accommodations at school. He has some learning issues and behavioral issue--we've requested a behavioral assessment. He struggles with overstimulation and impulsivity--He also struggles with anxiety. Here's my question--How would you handle the following? My son goes to art and music on Wednesdays, which is different than the other days of the week. He really struggles in music class. Best Advice for Preparing 10 Year Old for Camp

My ten year old son is going to sleep away camp this weekend for the first time with boy scouts. (My husband will be there as well) I talk to him all the time since his was little about not letting others touch you or pressure you into anything. II am looking for other words of wisdom to prepare him to be on his own and best equipped with knowledge about potential bad people. I don't want to frighten him but also want him to be aware that this exists in our world. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Piano Lesson Battle with 7 Year Old

My daughter just turned 7 and has been taking piano for about 9 months. She has been doing amazingly well, learning much faster than I ever remember learning at her age. She is a very auditory learner, so she can pick up a song after hearing it only once. This is great, but it means she NEVER looks at the page. Whenever she has to do any kind of practice or exercise reading the page, she HATES it. We are literally in tears after each practice. I say we, because since she can't read the notes, I have to sit with her. Recently I had...

Books for Just Starting to Read

Hi All My son is 4 (almost 5) and is just beginning to read short, predictable text. I am really excited because, I used to teach first grade / reading. Yay! Anyway, this may seem strange because I am a teacher, but I am appalled at the lack of readable books for this age/reading level in the library. (At school we had a book closet full of little books just right for this stage of reading) My son's preschool teacher seemed a bit taken aback when I wondered if I could choose a few titles from the school's book closet to read with him....

Too Young to Start Pre-school?

We are expecting our second baby in July. At that time, my older daughter will be 23 months old. I have been considering enrolling her in a pre-school for a few hours each week so that I can have some time with the new baby. She would be going for 3 hours a day, 3 days each week. The school we are considering has a program that allows the parent to come to school with the child for a few weeks until the child is acclimated. I was thinking of starting this program with my daughter about 2 months before the baby is born so that she has a...

It was NOT inexpensive to pay the fees and buy the necessary equipment needed. We are on week 7 of the season. There is one child on the team that has missed 3 games out of 7. The other ones that he did show up for, he ended up leaving in the middle of the game without a word to the coaches. The only time that he actually stayed the entire game was the week that his Mom had signed up to bring snacks. I cannot...

9-Year-old Asking About Sex

She accepted that but I feel I need to give her an answer soon. Any suggestions? How much should a 9-year-old know? Swimming Lessons--should I Do Them Myself?

I was a swim instructor for 5 years and (obviously) want my two kids (5-1/2 and 8) to learn how to swim. However, I've heard that you can't teach your own kids to swim and just want to put them into swimming lessons. My husband thinks that I'm being lazy and "not wanting" to teach my own kids, but I don't want one more thing to discipline/push them on. What do you think?

Tonight my Grandson had his first practice for T-Ball. He is four and the other kids are way more experienced. My concern is they were using regular baseballs and bats. He enjoyed running around, but seeing these 7 year olds hit them balls worries me a lot because he hasn't got a prayer of even knowing what to do to protect himself yet. I assumed when we signed there was a 4 year old T-ball for beginners. To put him at a 3 year and some cases 40 lbs disadvantage makes me wonder if I shouldn't second guess myself.
