Infection Turned to Cyst

My 10 month old was bit by something on her nipple. We think it was a spider. It immediately got infected and her nipple swelled to about 4 times its normal size. She was put on medicine for the infection. About 10 days later the infection is gone but her nipple is still rock hard. The doctor said its a cyst. They put her on another medicine and said that if its not gone in 10 days they will talk about cutting it out. Has anybody ever heard of this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Her cyst cleared up mostly with the medicine. There is still a little bump left but the doctors said that it should go away on its own. It is getting smaller all the time, but it seems like its taking forever! Thank you guys for your help. I appreciate it.

I had a large cyst in my breast. I wasn't bitten by anything though. I would ask if you can get the cyst aspirated instead of surgery. When they cut out a cyst they take the cyst and the surrounding tissue so if it's her nipple they might have to take the whole nipple off. I'm not trying to freak you out I'm just telling you the truth. I still have the cyst in my breast and I'm getting it aspirated again (2nd time) instead of surgery. That's what I would do if I were you. It certainly won't hurt to ask if aspiration is an option. Or if it doesn't bother her you can just let it be but there is a possibility that the cyst cold get inflamed again. Also I'm almost 100% that a cyst is in it's own sac and if it isn't inflamed or red around the area then it won't spread into your blood stream. If it's irritated though you'll know and they'll just give you antibiotics that's what they did for me.

Hello W.,
This isn't exactly the same, but perhaps similar. A friend of a friend - adult female, was bitten by a spider, treated with antibiotics only to find after several days the area is also hard. She was transferred by ambulance to a nearby hospital, treated with IV antibiotics and the hardness did not disappear. Her next course of action is to try to remove the harden area while remaining optimistic that it doesn't spread throughout her blood stream. So...it sounds a little bit like what happened to your litle one.

I hope I didnt' scare you and keep in mind, this information was given to me yesterday at lunch from a friend of hers. So I may not have all the facts!

Good Luck!
