Hi ladies. I took my 2.5 year old son in to doctor last Friday due to him having what I thought was cold maybe sins infection. He has had lots. He has tubes in ears and toncils and adniods out last Aug. Well he had super runny nose, non stop pretty much for week so took him in, well his normal pediatrician was out so he saw someone else. She said looked like allergies and not cold or sinus infection. She said to wait a week and gibe him children's Claritin and if not better in week or cough bring him back. Well another week went by and still runny nose. He had a lil cough Friday and woke up Saturday coughing pretty bad. So I had to take him to doc in box. That doctor looked at him, listen to chest, and said still allergies no cold nothing even with cough. She sent in prescription for zyrtec sorry if spelled wrong ....and to try for week. If not better then she will. Prescribe something else for allergies. My question is, he has been sick with bad runny nose for over 2 weeks, and now bad cough for 3 days. Is this truly just allergies? He couged so bad this morning he threw up. I am just curious cuz he has been sick do long. Any advise would be great

So What Happened?

Edit 3 days ago is when cough started, not to bad but last 2 days has been bad and all day long....Edit, okay thanks, sounds like allergies, I just dont like to see him miserable for this long. He did not have upset tummy, he just coughed so bad he threw up. He has done this in past when he gets a bad cough. His runny nose was clear and ran like a sink the 1st week, now it still runsm however its thicker and has some color to it. Today is his 2nd day of the persciption allergy meds so hope it kicks in soon and dries him up :)

My son usually has a cough that goes along with his allergies. It sounds kinda bad, but it really is only related to allergies. Their sinuses drain and trickle down the back of their throat causing some irritation, so they cough. We have found that Zyrtec (we use the generic) has worked the best for my little guy. He is also 2.5. His issues can last a few days to a few weeks. It is hard to know what is going on, but unless other symptoms pop up we usually chalk it up to allergies.

With no fever and no other symptoms besides drainage and coughing... sounds like allergies.
My son has them. He has coughed so hard that he has thrown up before. But not in a long time---he isn't little anymore. :)

Drainage can cause a lot of coughing as it drops down the back of the throat. Did your son complain of an upset stomach? Or did he just cough and threw up and that was that?

Hi.
My son is in the same situation. He is 3.5. tonsil out recently also...

I chalk it up to a change in season. Dust etc....But if your son threw up it could be something else.....

Does he have the croup? That is. Does he cough mostly at nite and the early morn?

have you tried a cold air humidifier in his room at nite?

I wish you much luck.
Jilly

A similar thing is happening with me this week. I believe it's allergies. When it's a cold the mucous is thicker and has a color to it.

I would recommend that you take him to an allergist.

A good doctor can tell by looking in their sinuses whether it is allergy or infection. I was told that lining looks like "saran wrap" with allergies and like "hamburger meat" with infection. That's probably why they keep telling you it is 'just allergies'.

Second, it has been my experience that allergy medications are not always enough. I have given Claritin, Zyrtec, and Benadryl in combination, with the allergists permission, and sometimes that is not enough. When that happens steroids can be your only recourse.

My oldest daughter used to get so bad and her gag reflex is easily triggered. It was awful. The allergist told me that it was time for shots and it was the best thing we ever did. Due to her age she responded quickly and has not had the issues this allergy season. The difference is night and day so I highly recommend an allergist.

When my oldest has allergies real bad the first thing she gets is a cough caused by drainage. The runny nose is usually second. I usually give her Zyrtec and then run a humidifier at night and a hot bath with Johnson's Eucalyptus soap to help clear every thing up. I would try the Zyrtec for a few weeks - I don't think 1 week is long enough personally.
