Ever since I had my first son, I am getting chronic canker soars. They went away when I was pregnant with number 2, but they are back again. I get cankersoars that end up open (maybe turning to ulcers)they last 1 1/2 to 2 weeks each, get really big and make it hard to eat. Every time they go away, I have another one or 2 with in a week. Does anyone know of any remedies? Or have any ideas foods that may be triggering this? I'm so tired of always being in pain.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I decided to start with the iodine and the L-Lysine. These canker soars didn't get as big as they usually do and went away by the end of the week. 1 is still kinda there, but it's in a spot where it rubs against a tooth, so it's expected, but its not horribly sore anymore. I looked at every toothpaste I could, but can only find a select few without SLS, but I can't use them because they have whiteners in them and I can't use whitening toothpastes. I'm going to keep up with the L-Lysine and see what happens in the next couple of weeks.

I'll second the L-Lysine suggestion. My mom always had horrible canker sores...they would cover her whole mouth and go up into her nasal passage...awful. Anyway, she would take L-Lysine at the onset and they would go away. She got to the point where she just took it every day for many years, and she hasn't had a severe outbreak since. She still gets one every once in a while, and then just takes L-Lysine and uses Abreva topically. She also claims taking a daily sauna helps, but I don't know how practical that is for everyone! Good luck!

Hi T.,
I had chronic canker soars as a kid. I remember how painful they are. I haven't had them since I started on a good nutritional program. I did a search on the web and this site has some good information. http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/treatments/a/Canker.htm

B-Vitamins are depleted by sugar and stress so you might want to consider decreasing those. (Well, the sugar anyway) Also, if you're drinking pop, that produces an acid condition in the body which makes your immune system weaker.

Hi T.,
I get canker sores occasionally, but not enough to try any of the rememdies suggested by others. However, as far as "quick" OTC stuff to stop the pain short-term, I have found Kanka to be the most effective. It won't prevent or minimize the number of sores you get, but in the meantime it might make you more comfortable while you have them. Good luck!

I heard that gargling with Hydrogen Peroxide is the cure. It also whitens your teeth. You're supposed to gargle everyday for 10 minutes (yes that is a long time to gargle, I do it in the shower). Just take a capful, it's a tiny bit, but expands in your mouth. I used to get occasional kanker sores and this has worked for me and has whitened my teeth and makes my mouth feel incredibly clean. Use Hydrogen Peroxide in place of windex and counter cleaners as well.

When i had cancer sores, i was told to switch tooth paste, as odd as it may sound. After I switched tooth paste I very rarely ever get one. When I do get one I buy a product called orabase. It puts a film over it to protect it when you are eating. It also numbs it a little. Hope this helps

My dad always had us use I believe Iodine. It was a small bottle with dark rusty color substance I believe iodine. We would take a q-tip dip it in and spread it on our canker sores. And maybe 2-3 days later after doing this it would be gone. It's like under a dollar the drug store and worked for me. I have no idea if it's safe or anything but it does work and I never saw any bad side effects.

Try this website below they have some recommendations for cankersores under medical.

Hi T.. I had a problem with canker sores & I used to take a vitamin called L-Lysine. (got them at Walgreens/Target) They are pretty big tablets, but they work wonders! I copied something I found online talking about the benefits -
"L-Lysine is also an effective natural remedy for herpes infections and cold sores. L-Lysine is particularly helpful in restoring normal arginine levels important for the maintenance of healthy gum and lip tissue."

I don't know about foods to avoid, but anytime I felt a sore coming on, the vitamins took care of it. I haven't had to use them for about 2 years, so mine eventually went away on their own.

Best of luck to you!

The safest way to get rid of them is to gargle with warm salt water 2-3 times daily. I swear this works, and Dr.'s have told me too this is the safest natural remedy, fast too. It also keeps the mouth healthy. Tastes terrible, but those painful sores are gone in no time at all.

Upping the B's is good but can upset your stomach if your already fine. Adding L-Lysine (it's an amino acid sold in the vitamin section) was a suggestion I was given many moons ago and it was exactly what worked.

I get canker sores if I eat too much citric acid - citrus fruits or juices, cranberry, tomato. Also, I know someone who got them from tartar control toothpaste! You may have to experiment with your diet a little to see what has an effect. Good luck!

I recently learned that iron deficiency can cause increased canker sores. There are medications,my brother had them very badly when he was little, but I think you should start at your doctors, they can do a really quick finger prick and see where you are, as far as blood iron. Iron suppliments can cause some constipation with some people, so you may just want to try eating more lean red meat and high iron foods and set an advance doctors appointment so if it doesn't clear up you can get suggestions.

Canker sores are caused by increased acid in the stomach. A natural way to change the acidity of the stomach is to take probiotics. Most yogurts have natural probiotics in them, but you can also find them in capsule form at you local health food store. They're usually in a refrigerator. Until your body has readjusted try to avoid acidic foods and beverages, like sodas, OJ, and spicy foods and try to decrease your stress level.

Good luck,

K.

I have been a canker sore suffer my entire life. I usually would end up getting them right before I started my period. Citrusey (sp?)foods for me would also set them off - too many pineapples for example.

You can buy medicine over the counter that numbs the sores - it puts a coating over them which makes it easier to eat - it doesn't taste the best though. I did go to the dentist one time when I had a bad one and he put some medicine on it that made it disappear the next day - of course it's not something that he could give me or even sell to me. Sorry that's not much help. My sister gets them as well - and actually runs a fever sometimes w/them. Try the over the counter - it may help somewhat.

I used to get cancersoars quite often too so I understand the pain you are in! This always worked well for me as far as speeding up the time it took to heal the buggers. Dip a q-tip in peroxide, then use the other end of the q-tip and dry the soar then dab on the peroxide immediately-try to let the peroxide sit on the soar as long as you can without it getting wet. If you do that a couple of times a day I guarantee you'll have them heal up much faster than doing nothing.

As far as foods go, perhaps cutting back on Citrus or Vit. C? Citrus was a big culprit for my cankersoars.

Hope this helps!

I use to get them all the time and have 2 boys similar in ages to yours. I started using zinc tablets and have been without canker sores for 3 or 4 months.

Hope this helps, I know how painful they can be with little ones always playing with your teeth:-)
