If you want something that works, but isn't awkward for you to buy or have around, try the Hitachi Magic Wand. Its a "back massager" and works for that as well, so its the 007 of toys. I actually don't have much experience here. Years ago, we had a plain dildo I didn't care for (it was given to him as a joke on our wedding from his wonderful friends). We also had a rabbit dildo that I didn't like either. However, my husband did come home with Hitachi Magic Wand (Koko F. mentions it as well) that I absolutely love. She's right when says it doesn't look "naughty". So I don't have to keep it hidden and I use it more often for my shoulders than anything else anyway! :D (But it does work in other areas.)

Now, if you have a good adult store in your area (like we do) they will be able to answer all of your questions. Don't feel embarrassed because they aren't. Trust me, they've heard it all. You should look into hosting a slumber party. Think Tupperware, but with adult toys. :) I have been to a few, and they are super fun! You invite friends and family over 18, girls only, and the lady brings a catalogue, and a lot of toys and products to demo. (not used, obviously) she can tell you about each one individually too so you can get one for what you need. The first time I went to a party, I thought it would be really akward, but they are so fun! I have been to them with co-workers, friends, even one time with my grandma! lol! I used to run an on-line adult toy store. DO NOT go on how the item looks. They like to add a bunch of glittery things because that's what they think women want. (It also jacks up the price.)

I would go to the store with your husband and pick up something together. Nothing crazy, especially if this is the first time. A basic vibrator can be awesome for the both of you. I would stay away from things like "the rabbit" as a first toy, in my opinion these are more for "alone time" if you know what I mean and would probably make your hubby feel a bit left out.
Either way have fun with it, thats why you are looking to get one right?

I didn't even read the other responses, but the answer would really depend on what you're looking for. My girlfriend used to do 'slumber parties' and so I got a lot of the extras... yes, I have toys. Most are still unused, but some were too much fun to leave alone ;) Are you using them with or without a partner? I wouldn't go all out and get anything crazy if this is your first purchase. just go to the toy store whatever your prefereance and dont be afraid to ask questions about diffrent items they get asked all the time. depends on how kinky you want to get as to what toys to get. and if your not sure what its for ask. if they dont know from personal experience they do from word of mouth. definately love lotion the kind that get hot when you use it. I didnt like the rabbit. jmo. dont get a cheapy. either. I got a call from a friend at a toy store once asking what a ring was. I had to explain it to her and she bought a whole package of variety rings. Well this is personal preference...think about what you want out of it....like insertion, vibration, speed/strength of vibration, g-spot stimulation, etc. I have some that I don't use very often just because I didn't care for them. If it's your first experience, try something small and basic, then work your way up!
I'm also the type to want to SEE it in person. On-line stuff doesn't work for me unless I want to order something I already have. Some stores will even show you a model of something you want to buy. They do this so you can hold it and feel the vibration, or show you exactly what the "selling points" are. (don't worry they keep it behind the counter and nothing gross is done with it).
