Bullying in Grade School

My son is in 5th grade. He is quite funny, outgoing, cute, very athletic and tries to be a "good" person. Today he came home and told me that 3 kids had been bullying him on the playground. 2 of the boys were on his b-ball team last year and came to his b-day party even. One of the boys is smaller than mine and the other is bigger, the other boy I don't even know. Today they would do surprise attacks on him by grabbing him by the neck and throwing him down. They would then kick him and hit him and call him the f word. They are all in the...

Mothers of Daughters - Pros/cons of Being Oldest/youngest in Class

Just wondering for those of you with daughters that either just missed the cut off and who are the oldest in their class or have daughters who just made the cut off (or started early) and are the youngest in their class...do you see any advantage/disadvantage for girls either way?

New School Again!!

Okay ladies please be nice, lol. Here is my ordeal. We have moved to a new town a little over a year ago. Prior to that we lived in a city. It was a great place to buy our first house but did not have a good school system. We had never planned on being their long enough for my daughter to be in school. But with the housing crisis we were kind of stuck. So we put our daughter in a catholic school. It was amazing!!!! My daughter thrived. The school was like a family to us. But we always knew we wanted to raise her in a better town with more...

18 Year Old Daughter

Hi, My 18 year old daughter is sleeping overnight with a boyfriend. I have told her that this is not acceptable to me and that it is definetly not ladylike. She told me she would not do it again. Then she turns around and says shes going for a little whild and I call at 4:45 am and she answers the phone(which she did not do before) sleepy like and tells me she is on her way. I tell her what is the point at this time of the morning and that she should have taken her clothes with her. I told her she could not be a tramp around me and...

So Sad My Neighors Are Moving - but Not Because We Are Friends

How screwy is that? My next door neighbors will be moving and renting their house out. We are friendly when we see each other, but we are really not friends. These folks are great because they have 3 kids, they are quiet, and never bother anyone. They are basically like us...they go to work and raise their kids. I hate to think of who might move in as a renter...Good neighbors are really hard to come by...we have a woman across the street that is insane and calls code enforcement on everyone all of the time...

How to Keep My Son Safe on the School Bus?

My 5 year old just started taking the bus to kindergarten, he really likes school, the kids, and the bus ride. But the boy who is assigned next to him, also 5 (but not in his class) keeps hitting him, pinching him, and other things. I have spoken to the bus driver twice, who says non-committed things like "I'll keep an eye out" or "I'll try to put him (the other boy) in another seat." But doesn't do anything. Next stop is the principal I guess. Anyone have any advice / experience? My son likes this boy, except for the bus ride ...

Surviving Competitive Sports

I was pretty naive when we made the jump from the neighborhood softball team to playing on a competitive team. My daughter is 12, and has one year of competitive ball under her belt. My husband is the head coach. My problem- I HATE IT!! I feel terrible saying that, because she does love to play and he loves coaching. But they practice 3 times per week, and then play double and triple headers on the weekends, and some tournaments that last all weekend. Luckily, we aren't a travel team, though the tournaments require up to about a 3 hour...

High School Lunch

I was reading responses about high school senior traditions and I saw a few references to seniors being allowed to leave campus for lunch, and that the other students have to stay at school. Is this the norm? Where I live elementary students may leave for lunch with parents permission, and jr. high and high school are free to do as they please at lunch. When I was in high school I was able to get a spare either before or after lunch period, and I would be able to squeeze in working a lunch shift at the Burger King, or I could go to the...

2Nd Grade Homework Responsibility

I have several friends with kids much older than mine.. they are still sitting with their jr high and high school age kids and helping with homework.. often screaming and yelling about homework.. I do not want to go down that path.... Right now my DD is in 2nd grade... she gets homework several days a week. I unpack her backpack.. see what homework there is.. put homework on the table and get her started doing it.. I do not sit with her the entire time.. only if it is a brand new topic and she really needs help. After she is done...

Getting Ready for Middle School

My 10 year old is finishing 5th grade and will be going to middle school next school year. Since I've already done this once with my oldest, you might expect me to be more a little more secure about how to best support him during this transition. However, I am beginning to fret and worry. What types of things have helped your children transition between schools and grade milestones. He's been at the same elementary school since Kindergarden and will be moving to a much much larger school with a different schedule and a totally different...

Do You Share Your Kids' Report Cards Online?

It's report card time up in my neck of the woods and right on cue, my Facebook feed is full of parents who are posting photos of their kids' report cards or are sharing that they got "all A's" or whatever. While some parents cover their kids' names, some don't. Curious to know if you do this and why or why not? And do you have feelings about sharing your kids' other accomplishments (sports, music, student of the month, etc.)? I definitely don't do report cards. While a couple of my kids have done well with grades most of the time, two of...

Would You Rather Use a Cleaning Company or a Private Cleaning Lady???

My youngest will be starting Kindergarten in a couple of days and the agreement between DH and I is that once all kids go to school fulltime, I go back to work. However, throughout my entire life, I NEVER wanted a career or an outside job...all I ever wanted to do was be a homemaker AND stay at home mom. But since my kids are now in school, my SAHM duties have come to an end. My next love is taking care of my home and all that comes with it...especially cleaning! I LOVE TO CLEAN! So I thought, if I have to go back to work, I might as...

Public School Ratings - What Do They Really Mean?

Second question of the evening...can you tell my mind is on education tonight? Does anyone know of any resources that explain what public school rankings really mean? What I'm trying to understand is, if the school our son would go to is considered an "exemplary" school in a "blue ribbon, exemplary" district, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? We live in Texas. If I'm not mistaken, Texas is very near the bottom of the list nation-wide when it comes to public education. So I'm just trying to understand what it really means big-picture that we...

Do I Send Christmas Gifts to Adult Daughter Bashing Christians on Social Media?

Adult daughter chooses to be an atheist. I accept and respect her choice although I don’t agree with it. My problem is that she is constantly bashing and denigrating all things and everyone Christian in long diatribes on social media. She is the first to speak out very loudly if anyone belittles others for bullying based on race, religion, sexual orientation, etc., etc., but continues her cyber attack on Christianity. When I pointed out the hypocrisy, I received a long public tongue-lashing on social media. I am hurt and embarrassed. ...
