Hi there,
I am looking for a gym/health club in Royal Oak, Troy, Birmingham or Rochester/Rochester Hills area. I have a 14 month-old who naps at 10:30 and 3:30. Bally's and the Warren Community Center have childcare but they are closed when I would like to work out. Lifetime Fitness is good but they have a $280 enrollment fee which I think is totally ridiculous!! Please let me know if you have any recommendations. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Hi L.,

I am a stay at home mom in Royal Oak and have a 13 month old daughter.

I was looking for the same thing you were and actually signed up at Lifetime 2 weeks ago this Friday. They were offering a summer special and the enrollment fee was about $100 off, I'm not sure if it's still valid, but I would recommend looking into it because it has made a big difference for me just in this short amount of time. I used to belong to the Bally's in Troy and did not like that facility at all - my whole experience thus far with Lifetime has been so much better.

Good luck!

I'm a member at Lifetime Fitness and even though the enrollment fee is high, you have no contract. And the daycare is much better than any other gym I have been a member at. If you plan on joining and staying a member, consider it an investment.
We have a Fitness19 by us that has daycare (not sure of the hours), but the childcare is in a room without any windows, it's like a box. Plus they have no classes.
Not sure if I helped or not (sorry), but I am a huge Lifetime Fitness Fan, the club is like a Country Club and they have so much for the kids. Halloween Party's, Movie Night in the pool, Christmas Shopping night for the parents, (this is the one time you can leave the to go shopping for a few hours).
And nope I don't work for them, I'm just a very happy member.
The one in Rochester Hill's on Avon Road is the old Rochester Tennis and Swim Club, so you'd have many pools at that location.
Good Luck!

I started Jazzercise last fall and LOVE it! It's in B-ham on 14 Mile and Woodward (Embury United Mehodist Church) and they offer childcare during the 8:30 and 9:40am classes. It's $40/month and you can go to as many classes as you like 7 days/week (there's a schedule posted online):

It's seriously the BEST and MOST FUN workout I've ever done.

The YMCA in Royal Oak (on 11 mile) has childcare. Their facilities are older, but clean. I was very happy with the girls who staff the childcare room - sweet and well qualified.
If you are looking for a basic gym with all of the standard equipment (treadmill, weight machines, free weights, eliptical machines, etc), a clean pool, and a relatively good selection of classes, they are a good choice. They don't have the sauna and all of the fancy extras like Lifetime, but they are also much more reasonably priced.
