Hi everyone,
I am hoping someone can help. We have 3 cats - 2 boys and 1 girl. The girl, Cleo is 7 years old, and spayed. She doesn't really get along with the boys, but tolerates them. We have an 11 month old son. Our cats all share 1 huge ("Buddah") litter box that we completely change out a few times a week. Within the last month or so she consistently pees in the bathroom on the rug and/or poops under our couch. It is discgusting and my husband has about had it. Also we have our house on the market so we are constantly trying to keep it clean. Do any of you have any suggestions? I don't think it is a medical issue I truly believe she is one pissed off kitty - she was the 1st cat and now we have a baby, and 2 more cats. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone - the biggest thing is I think I have neglected my "1st baby" - so I'm going to make a conscious effort to spend more time petting her, and paying attention to her. I'm also going to get some of those cleaners you recommended to clean the house and will call the vet. Thank you everyone - please pray that we don't have to giver her up. My husband is so fed up but willing to let me try. Thanks everyone!!

I read this and think you you are writing about me!! I have the exact same problem. Well i did. Our oldest cat, around 10 not really sure, did not use the litter pan once we broght James home and she figured out that he was staying. We tried everything. There is a litter called cat attrack we tried, did not work, we tried pills from the vet for anxitey, did not work, we tried several litter pans in the areas she was goign in, did not work, well you get the pinot. We eventually had to give her up. But not to far. she went to my parents house and now she is perectly fine. She just really did not like the baby. She wanted her attention back and was not going to stop until she got it. If you have anyone that is willing to take her you might want to go that way. It really sucks i know. Take her to the vet to see if the anxiety pills work or if there is something else they can do.

Hope it works out and you can keep her

Thought I would leave you a note since there are usually very few responses to pet questions on this site. I have a dog not a cat, but our situation may be similar to yours. After my daughter was born, the dog started peeing and pooping in the house again. He had been housebroken before. I was so upset and grossed out by it especially once my precious baby started crawling around on that carpet. The only thing that worked for us was time and patience. (not what you were hoping for I know!) Brody needed to come to terms with having less attention and we tried to make a real effort to pay a little more attention to him. My husband always makes sure he takes him for a 10 minute walk every morning. That special doggy only time has really made a difference. Our daughter is 16 months now and the dog hasn't made a mess inside in months. From the cat's point of view her house is in turmoil right now, with the new baby, and things moved around and cleaned up for trying to sell the house. (Our dog always acts up when we move the furniture.) It sounds like she is unsure an unhappy and needs time to adjust. Hope this helps and that she can learn to accept her new household.

Hi there, I have 2 cats and one who sometimes pees outside of his box. Like others suggested you should really have at least 1 litter box per cat. I know it sounds like a lot when you have 3 cats but it's true cats really don't like to share and simply tolerate it until they decide "no more!" Also, once something smells like cat pee and you don't either clean it with the pet enzymes or get rid of it then chances are it's going to invite more peeing and pooping. Of course the above is only after you've taken her to the vet to clear any medical reasons. Good luck!

It does sound like she's pissed off. But take her to your Vet. anyway because she may have a urinary track infection. Do you see any straining when she goes? When you see her go under the couch, could you pick her up and put her in the literbox . Don't act like you're mad or she'll run away from you. Can you take the rug away in your bathroom? Can you put another literbox in the bathroom? Try cleaning the literbox more often. There is a product called Felaway that had fairmones in it that calms animals. It come in a spray or a plug in.Pricy though, it may be worth tring .Good Luck!

I'd take her to the vet. Cats are generally really clean and while they do show their anger and frustration by peeing and pooping outside the litter box, there could be a medical reason causing her to not make it to the box in time. Cats are really good at hiding pain, so you might not notice any symptoms.

You also might consider a second litter box in a different location just for this cat. We had two cats and the vet was amazed that they would use the same box since usually cats will only tolerate littermates / mom using the same litter box. It only lasted 5 years until our first child was born and we had similar behavior by the one cat and had to resort to a second box. We had to live with two boxes until our one cat had to be put to sleep last summer at the ripe old age of 17. She started peeing and pooping outside HER box and when we took her in to the vet we discovered she was ill and we opted to put her down. Given her advanced age, they didn't recommend treatment.
