My husband and I are celebrating our 10-year anniversary in May and have decided to spend some of our tax return on a trip, sans kids. My kids are (or will be at that time) 4 and 2, and I have never been away from them for more than a couple days, and even then it was only because I was gone while they were awake and home only when they were sleeping. In that regard, I am looking for a 5 day or less trip, under $2,000 if possible. I like a more active vacation, like scenic hiking, horseback riding, boating/canoeing, and my husband prefers to just chill, so something that has both options would be ideal. It doesn't have to be posh, or traditionally romantic, or tropical, but I am open to all suggestions. We live in the twin cities and have debated driving up to Duluth and Two Harbors, but I feel a little closed in here and wouldn't mind getting outta' Dodge. I'm just really committed to the 3-5 day time frame. If you have experienced an amazing getaway with these limits, I would love to hear from you!
My husband and I LOVED our trip to Costa Rica. We did it all - horseback riding, whitewater rafting/kayaking, hiking (gorgeous!!), swimming, hot springs, and just relaxing. Lodging is pretty inexpensive, so airfare is your biggest expense. Email me if you want more details!
You should definitely try a cruise. They're pretty cheap and you can stay on the boat or go on an excursion.
Our kids are teenagers and the only time we've left them home with Gram was when we were moving and we needed to find a house.
This year - they are 9th and 11th graders - we are going to a handbell festival without them. We live large! The kids are busy that weekend and need to stay home. We're making the most of it! We're going to see friends, enjoy each other's company, and just be a couple. I don't think it really matters where you go or how long you are away.
Just go wherever and have fun.

We left the kiddo with the grandparents and went to Isla Mujeres in Mexico for 4 nights over the xmas holiday. Fantastic in all ways. Even at peak season I think the trip was just under $2K, so I'm sure you could do much better. The island is pretty small so it is more of a chill place, but we did do some snorkeling and exploring (neither of us are really beach people). We stayed at a B&B that included a social hour every night (Casa Sirena) but there are also more traditional hotels and condos for rent. Enjoy the planning, there are a ton of fun things to do out there (our backup plan was to stay at a historic inn in New Orleans).
There is a wonderful, luxury B&B in Hayward, WI called the McCormick House Inn. It was completely renovated about 5 years ago. My husband and I spent an anniversary weekend there a few years ago. The B&B offers many amenities and opportunities to just relax and hang out, but Hayward also offers opportunities for canoeing, hiking, etc. Hayward also has wine tasting, antique shops, art galleries and book stores. What about Niagara Falls? I've never been, but my husband was up that way for business so he went for a visit and said it is beautiful and that we must go there together next time we are in the area. He stayed on the Canadian side at the Embassy Suites Fallsview Hotel. The hotel practically hangs over the falls.
You could do the Maiden of the Mist boat ride or walk down along the falls, or go to dinner overlooking the falls.
Just an idea. Not a location I would normally have thought of but it sounds kind of romantic.
I went to Hawaii when my son was 2 and he did fine. i left him for one week with my mom. I was the one that probably missed him more than he did.
I think a cruise would be a good idea, you can normally get a good for a few days. Try Carnival.
