Is Sitting up on Their Own Age Specific??

Boston, MA

My 6-month old daughter, Katie-Grace cannot sit on her own yet...is this something I should be concerned about? Is There Something Wrong with My Baby?

Orlando, FL

My son is about to be 8 mnths old, he's achieved things really early(before books and dr's say he should have), the only thing that concerns me is that he isn't saying any words. Like mama or dada or anything like that. He makes noises and like to blow raspberries and when I sign him a song, he makes noises along with me, and even pauses in the right spots in the song, like he understands. But he's not saying mama or dada. My family says that he should already and my cousin and s-i-l both have babies, 1 is a mnth old and one is 1 mnth younger, and they are both saying mama and dada...is there something I'm doing wrong? Could there be something wrong with him?? Any advice as to how I can encouraging him to say this, besides constantly saying the words myself, which my fiance and I both do all day and night.

Is This a Growth Spurt?

Kansas City, KS

My dear little girl is normally a happy and cheery little one. At almost 4 months she is at 13lbs 7oz. But lately, we have been concerned. It has been confirmed that she still has maternal blood present in her system and one of my auto-immune disorders is showing its ugly head. Before we went to see the doctor on Friday though, she had started to be fussier than usual. She did not like it when I left the room, she did not like daddy holding her over mommy, and don't get me started on her when we went to my parents house. She is eating a LOT more than usual. Normally she has 20oz of formula a day with 3oz diluted juice (6 oz total). Now she is having up to 30oz a day with the same amount of juice and still is fussy. I was also advised by the doc to put cereal (1 T. for every 2 oz of formula)in the formula to help thicken it and help with her reflux. THis has been going on now for 4 days. No fever/temp present, just the signs of ITP. I am just running thin here and dad is trying the best he can to help us out...Any advice on how to help little ones during growth spurts would be great.

Is This Normal

New York, NJ

My newborn has been wanting to stand from the time he was 5 weeks old by locking his legs when I sit him down. By six weeks he can go up and down bending his knees when I hold him in a standing position on my lap as if he were in a jumperoo. Now when I hold at arms length and balance him he takes steps towards me at 8 weeks and has the biggest smile. He also locks his legs as I take him out of the bathtub so that he can stand as I lift him out. Is this normal for his age? Has anyone else experienced this?

Is This Normal

Dallas, TX

My 9 month old (7 months adjusted) became very good at staying upright in a seated position recently. So part of our daily routine is playtime on the floor in a seated position. The past two days she has suddenly wanted no part in it. When you put her down on the floor she arches her back and stiffens her body so it is nearly impossible to put her in a seated position. I usually end up just leaving her on her back propped up on some pillows. The problem is she cries until someone picks her up. Why has she suddenly become disinterested in sitting up (and reaching towards crawling)? Any advice or I've been there before comments are appreciated.

My daughter is 14 months old and sleeps all night. When she woke me up this morning, I noticed that her diaper had leaked into her crib. But when I went to take off her sleeper, she had crystals all over her belly and legs, it almost looked like sugar crystals. Is it normal for urine to crystalize like that? She has had nothing new in her diet and I was a little concerned when I saw it. Has anyone had this happen to them?

Issues with the Grandparents

Chicago, IL

First of all thank you for all of the responses on my son is acting out request! I have one other issue that needs to be addressed. My husband and I are seperated and both work every weekend night so my 11 mo. old stays with his father's parents on these nights. They let him pull hair and basically get away with anything which makes it harder for me to teach him right from wrong. No matter what I say, they will continue to do things their own way. My ex has my son on the weekends so he insists my son stay there to be watched as they charge nothing and are happy to do it. I'm starting to get really frustrated with the situation and don't know what to do. I feel like my opinion on how to raise my son is being ignored. How do I handle this? I have no family in Chicago so its not easy to negotiate another childcare situation with my ex on the weekends. He insists my son be there while he has my son and we are both working.

Itchy Forehead and Nose

St. Louis, IL

My son is 5 months old and we are having a problem with him rubbing his forehead, nose, and eyes alot. It happens more during the night, he will rub is face on his sheets and wake himself up. He does have a little dry patch on his forehead, but I am not sure if it came before or after the rubbing started. I have put hydrocortisone cream on his head, lotion, everything you can imagine and it only helps temporarily. He is also a drool monster these days, soaking through several bibs and outfits a day. So, I dont know if this is all related to teething or if the itching is from something else. Anyone else have this issue?

Jennersville Hospital or Chrisitana?

Philadelphia, PA

I just moved to the area and I'm seeking out an OB/hospital. We plan to get pregnant over the summer. I thought I had found a nice all female practice that delivers at Christiana, however, I am hearing horrible things about Christiana, especially the nurses and the restrictions on husbands spending the night, etc. Has anyone delivered at Jennersville? How did you like the midwives and the MD? I'm a little nervous about having complications and having a midwife be on call as opposed to the MD; no offense to the midwives, I'm sure they are great...I am just unfamiliar with them and I have MD friends who are opposed to midwives...so I have a forced fear. Any recommendations or stories would be much appreciated. M

Minneapolis, MN

I have a 10 day old baby girl that is jaundice and koombs positive. She has been under phototherapy for 2 days and her billirubin results dropped. Her billirubin was tested the following day and was on the rise again. We had blood work done yesterday and now her hemoglobin dropped. Is there anyone out there that has dealt with this same situation. I am just wondering if this is normal or if I should be taking her to a specialist or another doctor. My doctor doesn't seem to think it is a big deal but has me coming back every other day for more blood work. If there is anyone out there that could help that would be great!

Lots of Baby Talk

New York, NJ

Hi Moms, I am a first time mom and I was wondering if lots of baby talk correlates to a talkative child. My son is 11 months old and has been "talking" since he was 2 months old. He uses lots of inflections and says lots of different sounds and syllabuls. He talks when he crawls, when he wants things, when he is falling asleep, and when he is excited or upset. He seems to be a lot more vocal than the other babies I am around. Dada is the most common thing and derivations of it as well. In your experience, does this correlate to a talkative child? What have been your experiences?

I started to hike up the iron fortified cereal and iron rich foods (I make my own organic baby food) and when we got her tested again 1 month later to check if the count improved it went down to 9. The doctor ordered a full panel blood test which we did today (4 viles, it was soooo sad) and we should get the results back in 3-4 days. Anyone else know anything about this or have info??? Thanks! Mom Seeking Advice About 10 Month Old Who Has No Teeth

Detroit, MI

Hello, My Son will be 10 months old on the 7th of this month and he still does not have any teeth. I thought that he was teething because he was drooling at one point about a month ago, but still nothing. I don't even think he is teething because he does not really show any signs. Every once in a while he will stick his fingers in his mouth and he does not drool much at all. I'm starting to get worried. My first son who is now 2 years old had at least 2 bottom teeth by the time he was six months old. I did take my 9 month old to the Dr. when he was about 8 months old. I was told it was not a problem until he turned a year old. Okay, he will be one in July and it seems like something should be happening buy now. Has anyone else had this problem? What could be taking so long? My son loves to eat and does not seem to be losing any weight because of the fact that he has no teeth. But I am becoming anxious. Any help would be appreciated.

Moms of Preemies - How to Run Errands?

Austin, TX

I recently brought my preemie home from the hospital - he was born at 31 weeks and is doing well. The NICU warned me against running errands during the winter months and basically advised me to keep the baby at home (until around March). I have a 2 1/2 year old that goes to daycare so it seems a little funny that I'm worrying about germs at the grocery store, but I guess there is nothing I can do about the daycare issue. I should also mention that he is receiving the monthly RSV vaccinations. Anyway, my question is - what have other preemie moms done in this situation? I have several errands that need to be run, especially with Christmas coming up. Did anyone take their babies out? I was considering putting a blanket over his car seat and saying no, if anyone asks to peek at him and also running my errands in the morning, when less people are out. I don't really have any friends that don't work and no family in town, so I can't think of anyone to ask to watch him. Anyway, I don't want to do anything stupid, so was just wondering how cautious other moms have been. Any advice appreciated.

More Signing Questions

Grand Rapids, MI

Hi, awhile ago i asked if anyone had done sign language with your children and a lot of you had so now i have another question. My daughter just turned 9 months, we started signing to her at six months, and a month ago when she turned 8 months she picked up the "milk" sign. now she knows that sign very well and uses it all the time. but she hasnt picked up any other signs yet. i think she might recognize "eat" when we do it but she hasnt tried to do it back. also, sometimes when shes eating she does the milk sign. we are also signing "more", "finished", and "change", but we arent always as consistent as we should be. we've been siging "bed time" since six months but i dont think she recognizes that one yet. so i guess my question is, what should we do now? are there other signs we should be using that would be better? how do we show her the "milk" is different from "eat?" any other advice or experience you might have would be very appreciated.

My 1-Yr Old "Not So Good" Behaviors

Los Angeles, CA

My 1-year old daughter seems to be developing some "not so good" behaviors lately: 1. blowing rasberries - she started around 10 months old, first I thought was cute, but she's been doing more and now during almost every feeding. I am having difficulties to make her to eat any solid food, especiallly she doesn't take much milk the first place (she weighs only 18 lbs). 2. throwing herself backwards - she does this whenever she gets either very excited or upset at something. She has hit her head several times in the crib, play pen, walls, floor, etc. 3. chewing the crib/playpen railing - I have bought her several teethers, but she seems to be fixated with the railing. Plus she likes to throw everything out from the crib /play pen so usually nothing can remain in there for more than 1 minute. I am curious to know if any babies out there have these same behaviors? and any advice would truly be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

My 11-Month Old Seems to Want to "Separate" My Husband and I

Rochester, NY

My husband works a midnight shift at work so he can stay home with our 11-month-old (almost 1 year old) son during the day while I work. When I get home from work we all eat dinner together and then my husband goes to sleep before he has to be up for work. The problem is that recently my son has started showing a dislike towards having my husband and I together. On my husbands days off or on the weekends, when we see each other more, my son will walk or crawl over to us and pull me away from his father. Or, if we're standing and hugging he will try to get between us and push us apart. He'll pull and tug to try to keep us apart. I'm not sure if it's because he's used to having one-on-one time with each of us so he's not sure what to think when we're together or if it's that possesive "stage" I just read he should be starting. We try to include him by having him come up and sit with us to snuggle or read the paper or watch TV but that's not what he wants, he just wants us separated. Has anyone else dealt with this? What should we do?

My 15-Month Old Is Afraid to Walk on Her Own

Dallas, TX

My daughter is ready to walk and has the balance she needs to do it on her own, but she insists on holding onto my fingers with each hand to take her wherever she wants to go. She's shown NO desire at all to let go and stand on her own, and she seems terribly fearful and angry when I try to encourage her to do it. Part of me wants to just "force" her to do it by refusing to offer her my hands, but I am worried that I'll destroy her trust in me if I do that... Am I being impatient? Will she eventually walk on her own? Or am I coddling her? My biggest worry is damaging her trust. Is that a legitimate worry? What do other moms do when their child won't let go...?

He was awake for about an hour where he played and laughed with me as if nothing was wrong. I wasn't sure if there was anything I should do, I was thinking of going to the ER but I touched his whole body and head and he didn't scream of pain and his eyes responded well when I turned on the lights and moved my hand from side to side. I watched him the whole night (I'm barely awake right now) and he slept peacefully and I fed him again and he seemed fine (he woke up again for a brief moment and smiled at me but fell asleep again). My Child Wont Stop Crying Unless I Hold Him!!!

Dallas, TX

I have a 8 month old son and a 4 yr ols daughter...and things are ok, but the fact that I can not do ANYTHING without him crying! I cant do the house work, get on the computer, or anything without him crying and crying. Ive tried putting him in the same room with me and give him some toys to play with, and that will distract him for at the most 5 min., but as soon as I go out of the room, or that 5 mins is up he is screaming and crying his little head off. I work from 2pm-10pm, so he is asleep by the time I get home from work. I even have tried sticking him in his crib and just letting him cry. But you know how that goes... I let him cry for 45mins before I picked him back up. He doesnt cry himself to sleep or just forget about trying to ALWAYS have my attention. Its pretty much like if Im not giving him my undevided attention he is not happy. (most of the time) I ask relatives to watch him so I can get some things done around the house, but even they dont want to most of the time, because he is so "NEEDY". I really need to get some house work done SOMETIME. I have even asked my daughter to play with him for a bit, but he doesnt want that either. I mean he is even crying while Im typing this. My Daughter Screams If She Is Alone for Even 10 Seconds!

New York, CT

I don't know what to do. My daughter (almost 7 months) can never play alone by herself. I know many babies that entertain themselves - but my little girl is not one of them. If she even sees you walking away from her, she will scream. Once you pick her up and or sit next to her, she is fine. My boyfriend completly blames this on me and he says i spoil her because i don't let her cry. I do let her cry, just not for more than 5 minutes. She does not know how to calm herself down once she starts crying, this makes me very nervous. On top of all of this, her babysitter now has brought this up to me and says that it is hard to go about her day if my daughter can't occupy herself in the playpen or with a toy (the babysitter has 1 other little girl as well). Any advice on how to get my daughter out of this phase (the doctor called it a phase) would be extremly helpful and appreciated.

We've tried giving him a special toy for the car, rolling the windows down, singing and making animal noises, playing different radio stations, sitting next to him (interchanging mommy and daddy), waiting until he is asleep, feeding him and properly burping him before we leave (he has acid reflux), putting a mirror where he can see it, etc, Please help!

My Son Seems ALWAYS Seems Tired...

Evansville, IN

I've posted here once before and was really grateful to get so many helpful replies... I’m hoping perhaps someone has had a similar experience to this, too… My son is 15 months old (although he was two months preemie, so he’s still like a 13 month old in many respects) and ALWAYS appears to be tired. He sleeps well, 10 hours almost every night (usually about 8pm-6am) and I think it is restful sleep because I rarely hear a peep out of him. He still takes two naps; morning nap is generally about 1 hour, afternoon nap is 1-2 hours. When he wakes up cranky, I usually try to get him to sleep a while longer, but that rarely works. He's fussy and cranky within an hour of being up. Even when he wakes up in a fantastic mood (after a longer nap), he still starts to act like he's ready for more sleep after about an hour! He just seems tired ALL of the TIME! I really don't want to revert back to three naps a day (I know many children are down to one per day by this point), but he acts like he really needs it. He just gets so tired and cranky, cries over the smallest thing, falls down and gets clumsy, rubs his eyes, yawning, etc. He doesn’t get anything in his diet that I would think could cause this. We stay away from sweets (he doesn’t even get juice), and his sugar primarily just comes from natural fruits. He doesn’t get any “table food” sweets, doesn’t even know what ice cream or candy is, etc. Could it be something else? As a preemie, he did have apnea (mostly during the first month of his life, which is typical for preemies), but he outgrew by the time he was about two months old. He’s been tested and we know that he’s not anemic. Since this has been going on for several months now, I asked our pediatrician about this at our 9 and 12 month check-ups, but she didn't seem too concerned about it. I asked if maybe he could have some type of allergies (which may explain his fatigue and rubbing of the eyes), but she said that children don't typically get seasonal allergies until they're 3-4 years old. She said that it's possible it could be another type of allergy (dust, pet dander, etc), but she didn't think it was likely. His 15 month visit is in a few weeks, so I'll bring it up again and see if she can offer any other suggestions. In the meantime, I'm just not sure what to do! I feel like I spend several hours of my day trying to keep a tired little boy happy and entertained (which can be tricky even for 30 minutes sometimes!). If he is just tired, I'm not sure why he's not sleeping more. Could it be something else? Has anyone else had an experience like this? Thanks so much for reading and any suggestions you may have... J.

My Son's Head ??

San Francisco, CA

Lately I have noticed that the back of my son's skull is really flat. Is this normal? Is this caused from having my son sleep on his back all the time? Will his skull change with his growth? I do try to give him lots of tummy time and sleep on his belly during nap times. It just looks really weird to me and wondering if this should even be a concern of mine. Thanks!

Need Advice on My Under-developed Son with Seizures.....

Kansas City, MO

OK so I don't want to sound like a hugh sob story but here goes.... I put out a request a couple of months ago about my son, Jeriah, and now I have another. My son, now 7 1/2 months old, is having seizures and is very delayed in his development. We spent a week at Children's Mercy and we are still waiting for answers. I noticed the first seizure on 9/30/07 and they have gotten progressively worse since then. He has 1 to 4 seizures on a normal day. He is on seizure medication but it is not working. The doctors have ruled out all the common disorders like autism, muscular disorders, brain tumors, etc. They believe he may have a genetic disorder but appearantly there are over 600 genetic disorders and pinpointing exactly what it is can take a long time. He has gotten so much worse in just one month. I fear the worst.... I'm truly concerned that we may lose our son. Has anyone delt with seizures and twitching combined with developmental delays (he can't hold his head up let alone roll over or sit up) in an infant? I've asked all the questions I know to ask and now were just playing the hurry up and wait game. I've never been so frustarated in my life. If something comes to mind that you think I should ask about please let me know. When we were at Children's Mercy they scheduled our follow-up appointments for the end of February. I just can't imagine how bad he'll be by then just seeing his regression in the last month. I need any and all advice I can get. Thanks in advance.

Need Encouraging Words from Other 'Nicu Moms'

Houston, TX

I had a baby girl on friday, I had to be induced due to problems, she weighed 4lbs 4oz, I got to hold her for a little bit and they took her to the nicu where she has been ever since. I stayed at the hospital till sunday night where I got to feed her every three hours. Yesterday and today, I go up there for a feeding hang out in the hospital till her next feeding before I have to go home. I'll probably have to this till she is home since I also have a lil' boy to take care of. They originally told me that she will most likely need to stay for 7-10 days so we were hoping to take her home maybe by this monday. I had her at 37 wks. When I mentioned that to the nurse today she said hmmm maybe by next weekend. My heart just sank. She seems to be doing really good, she eats like a champ, is gaining weight, she is off the lights, and has never had any breathing problems, they have just not taking her out of the incubator. I understand that they cannot give you a for sure date, but it is just so hard to have to go visit your own baby for such a short time. To feel the need to nurse and only have a pump is bad, I become a teary mess at nighttime. Physically I feel fine, we just want her home so badly (of course when she is ready)but since she is not premature I was not expecting this and I just feel horrible, I keep saying to myself just get through this week, the hubby is around on the weekend so I'll be able to see her more then. Another week sounds hard, I miss her.

Need Help with Breastfed 15 Week Old Taking a Bottle...

Denver, CO

I have a 15 week old boy who has been exclusively breastfed since birth and I plan on continuing BF'ing for another 6 months if I can. However, during the first 3 weeks my husband would do the last nighttime feeding with milk that I had pumped earlier that day so that I could get 3 hours of uninterupted sleep a day (which was fabulous) but since then we do only about 1 breast milk bottle a week when we are out of the house for any reason for dinner, visiting friends etc. The last two times we have tried to feed him with the bottle he has become very upset, crying, and pushes the bottle away from him, and just won't take it. This bottle time once a week in the past has been the key to getting out of the house but with him not taking it I am afraid to leave the house for more than 2-3 hours. One other bit of information is that due to difficulty with my son latching on in the begining I had to use a nipple shield which is very similar to the shape of a bottle nipple to fed from so I don't think it has much to do with the difference between a bare nipple and a bottle's nipple since I have always used the sheild. I am also not confortable BF'ing in puplic. Any advice on how to help me help him take a bottle once in a while would be greatly appreciated.

Need Stay at Home Mommy Advice or Input

Los Angeles, CA

Since I had my daughter in June 2007, I have been working for my dad part time. It has been great, though sometimes stressful. I am able to go into the office only 1-2 days a week and do what else I need to do from home. Between business picking up and me having our second little girl this coming June, we both realize he needs more and I simply am unable to do it. I am feeling really down about this for multiple reasons. First, the loss of income. Even though it wasn't huge, it was still something that we lived off of. Also, I have been connected to the company for 3 years, and am feeling the loss of not having that connection anymore. I enjoy my small amount of independence. So, I will be a full time stay at home mom come June, and I am a bit nervous about this because I have always had that little tiny bit of something for myself. I hope this doesn't sound too selfish becasue I LOVE being home with my daughter and spending all the time I can with her. I just know that with the work change and now being a full time stay out home mom will be an even bigger change and I am worried at how I will manage it I guess. I do realize that it is a small loss with much to gain, but I admit I am sad and a slightly depressed about it.If anyone has gone through anything similar and can let me know how it has worked for you, I would appreciate the input. Even if you just have some good money saving tips for the income loss, I would appreciate any tips! Thanks mommies :)

Need Walking Tips...

Portland, OR

Our son is 10 months old and wants to do nothing but walk while holding on to both of our hands (or sometimes just one depending on his mood). He refuses to crawl, but scoots backwards and can easily get up on his hands and knees. He is desperate to move! Although we don't mind walking around with him, it would be nice if he could gain some confidence to do things on his own and our backs could use a break! We have tried walking wings and a little push car, and he can use both successfully but most often doesn't want to do either (or wants to hold on to us with one hand and push the car with the other). He can also travel reasonably well, and has no problem standing with his palms up on a flat wall in front of him, but again, gets angry if he has to do so for any length of time. Any suggestions for how we can get him to enjoy moving on his own would be appreciated.

New Stay at Home Mom in Need of Moral Support and Advice

Austin, TX

Wow. I didn't know having a baby would be this hard! It is so difficult to get out because of her naps and meal times. Maybe I read too many baby books that strongly advise to keep the baby in her crib for all sleep....which the crib ends up being my arms for most of her naps. If she misses a nap, boy, do I pay for it! And I have tried nap training so that she would nap in her crib only to get an overtired baby. Does this baby business get better?? Do you get your independence back? I don't get much relief since my husband works late.

Newborn Baby with NON STOP Fussiness!

Dallas, TX

Hi Moms, I am asking this question for my younger sister that just had her first baby who is now 2 1/2 weeks old. The baby was on the Similac Advance formula and for the past 5 days has had non stop crying. I suggested she try Enfamil Gentlease and so she did but she said it hasn't stopped her non stop crying. No matter what she does, nothing seems to stop the crying. She'll sleep for about 20 minutes at a time and then wake up just screaming! Her pedi says this is normal but I've had 2 children and my other sisters also have children and none of our babies did this whether on formula or nursed. Anyhow, do any of you have any ideas she might be able to try to help her baby with the fussiness? She is a single mom and is living at my moms and both of them are really butting heads on how to handle the baby which is not helping my sister at all. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Hello, I have a daughter who is almost 2 1/2 months old. I am currently a single mom and she doesnt really see her dad that often maybe 3 times since shes been born. My problem is that I cant even really set her down to go use the restroom without her crying like she has something wrong with her. She never wants anyone else to hold her either she does fine for a few minutes than she has a total melt down. I need advice on how to help her learn that self soothing is really a great thing for her to learn and how do I teach her that I dont have to be holding her all the time. Also, how do I get her to go to other people because I need to go back to work eventually and she will have to go to a babysitter. Thank you, J.

Newborn BOY Leaking Out of His Diaper and Sick of Changing His Clothes

San Diego, CA

Okay, so I know when they are real little, it is normal to do a couple of oufit changes a day but.... I have a 11 day old baby boy who somehow is leaking (Shooting?) out the side of his diaper at least once sometimes 3 times a day. His diapers are NOT full to where they are saturated and thus would be leaking, I just don't get it. I have tried putting him in bigger diapers but it doesn't seem to help. I don't recall my daughter doing this so not sure if it is because he is a boy? Any suggestions? And by the way, he is only leaking, oh how shall I put it, #1, which I guess I should be grateful for that.

Detroit, MI

My daughter is 1 month today and for the past two weeks she is not pooping on her own. After about 3 days I give her a suppository and she will go. The poop is never solid and is very runny. She has also been very gassy. Since I am breast feeding I have tried to change my diet also. I have increase my water intake and have been watching what I eat. When I breast feed my son he never had any problems going to the bathroom until he went on formula. I have also tried giving her water with karo syrup in it. I give her 4 ounces every day. I just don't know what else to do and my poor baby is miserable. Any ideas would be great.

Newborn up All Night, Sleep All day...needs to Be Held ALWAYS...any Suggestions?

Minneapolis, MN

Our new little guy loves being held, like most do, but he does at night too. The only sleep I've gotten the last few nights has been the couple hours that I've let him sleep on my chest. Bad habit, I know. At bedtime, I feed him well and get him asleep. Lay him down in the bassinet and 20 minutes later, he's crying. Pacifiers work temporarily and I can maybe put it back into his mouth once, then he refuses them. I feed him again or rock him to get him tired and he's up again within the hour - and that's with feeding him again (nursing). A nurse suggested to place a heating pad in the crib while I"m feeding him and then take it out when I put him in, on the warm surface. It feels good, but he's back up within 20 - 40 min. And then during the day, of course he sleeps great. He would prefer to be held, but he CAN sleep in the bouncy seat. Again, he won't sleep for long in the crib or bassinet. We're working on keeping him awake during the day. Any suggestions on keeping him up would be appreciated too. I make sure to feed him every 2 hours during the day, hoping that he can go longer between feedings at night, but he still wants to eat that way at night too. A friend of mine replaced her bedtime feeding with formula and got her 1 month old to sleep for 4 hours, tempting...but should I?? What do you suggest? I'm up for anything!

Nine Month Old Who's Been Teething for 5 Months

Clarksville, KY

Our 9 month old girl, (my 3rd child), started teething at 3 months and got her 2 bottom teeth at 5 months which is average I think. She has been in pain and chewing everything in sight since then on her top gums.... but still no teeth! My other children cut their other teeth with a couple of months after the bottom ones popped through and I am concerned that there is no sign of upper teeth at all! No "bumps" that you can feel with your finger & no swelling at all. I have gone through tons of baby oragel, teething pills, and now tylenol due to the pain this is causing her. My grand-mother told me when children did not cut teeth on their own, her peers would take a metal thimble and rub the gums until they split to expose the teeth...yikes!! this sounds awful! I am considering taking her to a dentist unless someone can offer me suggestions. This is my 3rd little teether and`she has really suffered the past 2 months with it. Thanks so much!

Normal Behavior for a 1 Year Old?

Cincinnati, OH

Hi Everyone, My son will be 1 on Saturday and over the last week or so, I've seen some changes in him and I'm wondering if it is normal, related to teething or if something else is going on. He has become very fussy and needy. He wants to be held a lot and I just feel like it's hard to make him happy. He is down to about 1 bottle a day, if that, as he is using the sippy cups more and is now on milk and not formula. I took him to the MD to make sure he didn't have an earache. He is also not as happy about going to daycare anymore. he won't play in the play area there and is just pretty fussy all day. He still eats, drinks and poops are normal. My son has always been a very happy baby and only cried when he was sick or hungry. I'm just not sure what to do....I want my happy baby back! Also, if you have any tips on applying orajel (?) to a baby who screams, cries and fights you while you try to put it on, I'd be glad to hear it! Thanks!
