Newborn with Strange Rash.

My son is 6 weeks old and has a strange rash on his head. It is only on his face, back of head, neck, and ears, but no where else. It is red, patchy and scaly. He gets it really bad when he cries and it will go away almost totally soon after. He still has it now and hasn't cried for a while. I don't know what it could be since it is not anywhere else on his body. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. I am breastfeeding him also if that helps.

What can I do next?

I would take him to the doctor. My recollection is that pretty much all rashes should be checked by an MD. Does he have a fever?

It could be atopic dermatitis. My son had red scaly patches on his cheeks and the pediatrition diagnosed it as that. He only broke out with it once its been gone for almost a year.

My son has something like that its on his hand & its really light but turns red when he gets upset or cries. The doctors told me it was called a strawberry patch or capillary hemangioma. It isnt anything harmful to your son. It will fade more & more as he gets older.

Hello T., Congratulations on your baby boy and keep up the good work with breastfeeding. Are you using Dreft for the laundry for the entire family? Try to observe what his head is touching; your wardrobe, sheets, pillow case, towels etc. It might be just irritation to something...Using Mustela products works wonders, especially their body wash and lotion.

Probably just heat rash or baby achne...I would take him to the pedi though because he is so young. He could also have Roseola if he has had an unexplained fever the past few days. The pedi could probably give you an answer pretty quickly. Good Luck!

Have you eaten anything new? Could be a slight allergy to something you have eaten past through the breast milk. One thing I would say is get the Aveeno oatmeal bath (check the label to make sure ok with this age) and use Aveeno bath and lotion. My son is allergic to almost everything and these are the only things we can use.

sounds strange, a little like cradle cap, except that it goes away, even the scaly part goes away?? My daughter has a "Stork bite" which looks like a rash on her forhead, left eyelid and teh back of her head, it was dark at birth, but not only shows when she gets upset. Don't know if it helps or not, good luck .
