Going Out in Public

Houston, TX

I am having an issue with my little one. I have a 2 month old baby boy. Every time I go out into public it as if he is totally unhappy. I can't figure out what the problem is at all. I am not sure if it is the car seat itself, or just the whole temputure change. I am at a loss. He has a swing at home that seems to be his little safe haiven. He could be swinging in that all day long. I often wonder if that has done a little harm in the fact that if he is not constantly in motion he is unhappy. Is this a possibility? My son is also a big eater. If he is awake it seems as if he wants to be constantly eating. This seems to make him content. How do I help him to be happy when the association with being awake is with eating. Is this normal for his age, or am I teaching him unhealthy habits? It's either awake and eating or sleeping. Will he grow out of this? Being a first time mother it seems as if I have so many questions and concerns. A little advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hair Clips?

San Francisco, CA

I recently bought the No Slippy Hair Clippy for my six month old daughter. They are FANTASTIC and stay in very well. (I bought large ones and she cannot swallow them.) They are lined with velvet on both sides, but the reason why they are "no slippy" is because they have a magnet inside the clip. The magnet is glued to the felt and cannot come off. If anyone is familiar with these clips, do you know if the magnet is hazardous to my infant's head/brain? I'm going to see the doctor in a couple of days so I'll ask him about this. Does anyone have any recommendations for other brands of clips that stay in just in case? I'm looking for fully lined velvet ones preferably the "alligator" clip type not the snap ones. Thanks for your suggestions!

Hair Question

Spartanburg, SC

My baby girl is 11 weeks old, and she is mixed. I am white and her daddy is black. She was born and still has hair with the same texture as mine, and I am wondering if it will stay this way or change. I'm wondering if any other mothers with biracial children have dealt with this. I've seen other mixed children and some seem to have hair like hers and other don't so I'm just wondering what I can expect. Any thoughts or comments are much appreciated.

Has This Happened to You?

Kansas City, KS

I fed my 5 month old boy oatmeal cereal for the first time last night at 7:30, gave him a bath and prayed for a nice long sleep. Instead he was ready to breastfeed again at 8:30, 9:30 and at 10 he started screaming! This went on and off til 5 am. The only way to get him calm would be to walk around and pat his back. Just when I thought I could lay down with him (we co-sleep) he would be screaming again. He wouldn't nurse all night, wouldn't take a bottle or pacifier. I changed his diapers, his clothes, gave him tylenol, checked his temp. (he didn't have one) and nothing - he just screamed til he passed out. I called the on-call doc at our hospital but by that time he was asleep and she said it could be a number of different things, i.e. teething, new food, upper respiratory infection, ear ache and advised if things didn't get better to see a doctor today. Well he is much better today (still no temp, has pooped, nursed and is sleeping) so I am just left wondering - what the heck was that?? Was it the oatmeal? Have any of your children acted like this? He does have a runny nose and a little cough but we have been though this and an earache before without all the screaming!! I just don't get it.

Head Scratching

New York, NY

My 5 month old son has recently starting scratching his head relentlessly when he's tired. He doesn't do it when fully awake, so I don't think there's a skin issue. We've already been to the doctor and she said it's "developmental". Has anyone else experienced this problem? I'm assuming he'll grow out of it and until then we're using pjs with "mittens" and keeping his nails as short as possible. thanks.

Health Question on 5-Month Old Infant

Boston, MA

Hi There. I was holding my 5.5 month old daughter this morning and I found a small lump just to the left of her left nipple. I have never noticed it before, and I'm always playing with her so I feel like it just came up. I called the pediatrician this morning and they told me that if it didn't go away by Monday than I should bring her in. Has anyone else had the same thing happened and turned out to be nothing? I'm trying not to be all worried about it since I don't know anything yet, but I can't help it. I'm hoping that maybe it is just a swollen gland or something. Any ideas?

Help - Meal Time a Disaster!

New York, NJ

My 17 month old has always been a picky eater though it has gotten worse since he turned a year old. He has a pretty healthy diet though eats only minimal things. When I try to offer him new things, most importantly the food that my husband and I are eating, he cries and absolutely refuses to try it. To make matters worse, he has now begun throwing his food and crying until I give him the food that he wants- though he rarely seems to know WHAT he wants. I have come to dread meal time with the constant up and down, crying etc. My pediatrician said that it may have to come down to "this is what is for dinner, if you don't want it, you don't eat". But I'm not sure I am comfortable with that. This morning at breakfast I let him throw a temper tantrum in the highchair and eventually he seemed to calm down and eat but it wasn't a fun way to start the day. He is usually a pretty mild mannered child (though he obviously has a temper) but meal time brings out the crazy in him! Any suggestions????

Help Getting Shoes on 14 Month Old

Chicago, IL

Does anyone have any advise on how to get shoes on my soon to be 14 month old daughter? She's been walking for a couple of months now and I have a little pair of leather shoes with elastic that she wears when we go out. Now that the weather is colder and wetter, I would like to let her play outside, but can't get her into any shoes with harder soles. She curls up her feet. I have tried dozens of different kinds of shoes, but nothing seems to work. Is there a place I can push on my daughters foot or something to stop her from curling her toes? Is this something she'll eventually grow out of?

Help with 2 Months Baby Activities

Los Angeles, CA

Hi, After following for a while this website, I decided to ask for some help too. This isn't very easy for me, because I've been in USA just for 16 months and I don't have a good English yet. Anyway, I guess your advices are more important than my mistakes! I'm a stay at home mom to a 2 months wonderful girl. We live in Redondo Beach and I don't know what I can do to entertain her. My family was here for Xmas (I'm from Brazil) and I think Amanda was accustomed with noise and a lot of people holding her. But now, I'm by myself. I don't have any relative in the USA and my husband works all day. I tried to go out for walk, but I'm sorry for her because the days have been cold and windy, and I don't drive. I got several toys for her, such as bouncer, swing, and 3-D activity gym. However, she gets tired pretty soon or even doesn't want to play. Does someone have any suggestion?

Help! 7 Month Old Hates Car Rides!

New York, NY

My 7 month old continues to hate car rides. She hates being buckled in, she hates sitting there. We bought a Britax roundabout when she was 6 months hoping it was the infant car seat she was tired of, but nope! She'll tolerate maybe 15 minutes and then she fusses until she starts crying. I've been sitting in the back with her keeping her occupied which works for a bit or timing it so she'll go down for her nap during the ride. Unfortunately its led to me avoiding car trips and ending up a bit home-bound and depressed. Is there anything I can do? Do I just have to let her cry?

Help! My Toddler Hates Having His Hair Washed

Chicago, IL

Hi, Our 17 month old hates having his hair washed, and I was wondering if any of you have any tips on making this a smooth or pleasant experience? Mainly he hates getting water on his face, and is happy to make the hair washing movements with his hands and even likes to wash himself with a washcloth. Any ideas would be really helpful! On another front in the bathtub, during the last 2 times I've given him a bath, he has pooped in the tub. This must be common, but I don't see much written about it. Anybody else had this happen? How did you react? He's too little now to start potty training him, right, and making a big deal might be a bad idea, too? Bathtime isn't as fun as it used to be!!!! Thanks for any suggestions!

Help...my Usually Happy 9 Month Old Has Changed Since We Put Him in Daycare!

New York, NJ

Our son has generally been an easy going baby. However, 2 weeks ago we enrolled him in daycare and since then we have noticed several changes. He refuses to sleep in his crib, refuses to be spoon fed (and he used to eat EVERYTHING), and sometimes has fits for no reason at all. He has also been on antibiotics for the past 10 days for an ear infection. We are trying to determine if he's simply reached a difficult age or whether daycare is having some kind of negative affect on him. Or whether it could be the antibiotics.

Here We Go Again, Baby W/ Rash Part 3

Atlanta, GA

Okay, here we go again, in a nut shell...My son had a rash under his chin that spread around his neck, down his chest and back and up his face. The doctor first told me that it was yeast, after a week and it only getting worse we went back and another doctor in the group said it was a reaction to something, probably detergent or excema. I have bought new detergent, washed EVERYTHING, and applying a steroid cream to the rash along with moisturizers. The rash under his chin that spread is about 90% gone...HOWEVER...he now has a rash that has gone down is legs, feet and arms. It looks and feels VERY similar to the other rash. I think it is the same thing. So, new question, could this have been a food allergy? He is sleeping and wearing and only touching the newly washed clothes. He has mainly been inside. So we have kept him as cool and dry as possible. The area where the rash started is almost gone. Would an allergic reaction to food clear up with the cream? I have not changed formula since he was 4 weeks old. (he is now 5 1/2 months). I hadn't changed detergent until last week. He is eating baby food, sweet potatoes, carrots, bananas, prunes and pears. He hasn't had any citrus. I will probably be taking him back to the doc tomorrow. aaaggggg!! I just wanted to get your opinions. By the way, he is caught up on his immunizations. Thanks for you advice. No one in our family has food allergies so I am not sure what kind of rash to look for with that.

Holding Baby ALL DAY!

Boise, ID

Help! I have a 3 month old baby that absolutely will NOT let me put him down! I feed him, hold him, play with him, change him, and when he is tired, put him to sleep via rocking. When I lay him down, he will sleep for 10 or so minutes and then wake up screaming. I continue on with this for the ENTIRE DAY! I am not able to do anything in my home, it is difficult for me to take care of my 2 year old without having the baby scream the entire time. I barely get a shower...and when I do, I have to listen to the baby screaming from the swing or bouncy chair. At the moment, I am typing the listening to the baby scream from his swing, which is RIGHT next to me. As soon as I pick him up, all is well again. I have have justified his being held all day because he sleeps through the night, but at this point, I just feel resentful because he will not entertain himself for even 10 minutes. How Can I Be Both Polite Yet Firm?

Los Angeles, CA

I am a very nice and out going person. And I want my son to be the same way. He is just about to turn one year old. But I find it mind boggling, that when I go out, weither it be the market, shopping or an eating establishment, people will come up to my son and start talking and flirting with him (which that I donot mind at all) but they will grab and shake his hand, touch his face and let him grab thier fingers. Now I am not a germafobe, but at the same time, I do not know when is the last time they have washed thier hands. And if we are at the super market, they are touching all kinds of things, meat, milk and other items. How can I be nice, polite and friendly, yet stop them from touching my son? I do not want to be rude, but I dont want anyone touching my baby, one, who I dont know, but also more than that, who I dont know when they wash their hands. I do not touch anyones child when I go to Target, I may say hello and smile, but no touching.Thank you!

How Do I Get My 3 Month Old on a Schedule ?

Washington DC, VA

Hi, after reading so many helpful hints from you ladies, I have a request and need some advice. My 3 month old is sleeping and eating pretty much when ever he wants to, which is normal for an infant, I know, but I would like him to get on somewhat of a schedule, more predictable. He sleeps about 5-7 hours ,for the longest stretch at night, comes about 1-2 times a night, which is fine, but during the day, he wants to nurse almost every 2-3 hours and naps 2-3 times. He has a lot of gas,and wakes up because of it and then wants to nurse. I have eliminated almost everything from my diet, that could cause him gas and have gas drops and gripe water in use.It is just different every day and I would like to help him get on a schedule, without refusing him to nurse, because it is not "time" yet!thanks in advance for your experiences!

How Do I Get My 4 Month Old to Drink from a Bottle?

Spokane, WA

My 4 month old daughter is having some feeding problem. She wants to play all the time and does not want to feed at all. I was and still breast feeding her. She would want to feed only after she puts herself to sleep sucking her fingers. Even after she is asleep I should not lift her up and If I disturb her sleep she starts screaming, so I just feed her without disturbing. So far this is going good and she is sleep eating. I used to pump milk whenever she doesn't want to feed, I used to get 8 oz(4+4) from both breast and now it has reduced to 4 oz(2+2), so I am worried that my body is stopping to produce milk. I am trying to give her a bottle so that she gets used to it and rather than my milk stopping all of a sudden and me getting depressed, I am thinking of weaning her in the next 2 months. Now coming to the bottle, I have tried all sorts of nipple available in stores. She is not willing to take any of them. I think she does not like the taste of the nipple. All she does is suck and spit what she sucked. I took her to lactation specialist and tried cup feeding her. She does not open her mouth to the cup, she looks at the cup and turns her face. I am asking you moms to give me advice on what other ways can I possibly make my baby drink her milk? Or if you had same kind of problem with your baby, how did you put them back to your breast when they are awake and alert? I have tried all the things her doctor and lactation specialist said to put her back, but nothing worked. So please do not the same advice that they say, I need something else, something effective and it should work? I am sorry but I am really not in a steady mind for past 1 month and I need relief. Please help me. Thanks a lot.

How to Help My Friend Who Just Lost Her 5 Day Old Baby?

My daughter is 18 months old and trimming her toenails is beyond challenging. I've never had a problem with trimming her fingernails but she gets really mad when I try to trim her toenails. I've attempted it while she's watching her favorite tv show, while she's in her high chair, while she's in the tub, right after the tub when they are soft. She screams and kicks like I am torturing her. If anyone can offer some fun or helpful ideas I'd sure appreciate it.

How to Wash Handmade Blanket

Rockford, IL

My 9 month old son has a knitted/crocheted blanket that was given to him as a gift from his great aunt. The other day he threw up in his bed. When I got him up this morning, I noticed that a little got on his blanket. Does anyone know if I can just wash it on the gentle cycle in the washing machine and then let air dry? I don't want to ruin it.

How to Wean a 10 Month Old from Breastfeeding?

Dallas, TX

Hey Mamas, I am a teacher and school starts in a couple of weeks. I've been blessed to be able to nurse my daughter this far. I planned on nursing her till she was 1 yr, however, that will be in October and I don't want to have to go through this during the school year. The worst is at night. She still gets up every 3-4 hrs. She WILL NOT take a bottle from me or from my husband while I'm around. I don't mind pumping at work, I did it last year when I had to back to work after 6 weeks. She takes bottles fine from the daycare lady we have her going to. She is just defiant when it comes to me trying to give her one. What works? How did you finally get your little one "Off You?" TIA, G.

Humidifier...What Do You Recommend?

Dayton, OH

Hello Ladies, I was wondering about humidifiers for my soon to be 9mo daughter. I bought the Vicks Cool Mist Humidifier but needless to say, it leaked 3 times. I thought that I was doing something wrong so that's why I tried it 3 times. It took 6 soaked towels and my tile peeling off of the floor to realize, it wasn't me...it was the product!;-/ Anyway, what do you ladies recommend? I have asked the doctors on base but I have just gotten the response of, "Just get a regular humidifier", which means to me, they haven't had any experience as far as buying one, to recommend the best one. Thanks in advance ladies and Happy Holidays!

Hylands Teething Tablets

Seattle, WA

so alexis (15 months) is teething again, getting #13 (already poked through) and 14 (very close, probably will poke through in the next few days.. possibly 15 and 16 too..her gums seem a little...swollen. shes always been just fine when teething even when her molars came in all 4 at once. she wasnt cranky or fussy..just would chew on her toys more. every so often at night we would use orajel and that would do it. well now shes been super cranky, every little thing sets her off into a screaming fit. shes also chewing on her fingers. now, ive read a ton of reviews for hylands TT and from what ive read they work wonders with helping kids sleep and relax. but shes not really having trouble sleeping at all..she sleeps for 10-12 hours at night and takes a 2-3 hour nap during the day.. shes just super cranky/moody. so im wondering if i should actually try these and if they would make that much of a difference.

I Am on Cloud Nine-

Houston, TX

Hi Ladies, Well God is such a good God! - I knew that already but still... He knew I needed me a pick me up ( I am the one who needed to vent yesterday...) My son said MA-MA today! He even said Da-Da (sounds more like Ba-ba but we know what he means) And he didn't say it once-he said it all evening! He kind of said it when he cried before (at least that is what everyone else says) but now he says it over and over! I am just so overjoyed! I got it on video and on my phone...such a blessing! This isn't really a question- just wanted to share- and thanks again for all of the advice- I had a hard time keeping up with all the posts! :)

I Gave Her Probiotics and She Is Suffering with Them

I gave my daughter probiotics because she has multiple food allergies/intolerances and they came highly recommended by other moms whose children have had that. she has a very difficult time digesting solids and also breast milk if I eat certain things( my diet has been seriously restricted to continue bf. I tried them once and she seemed a little uncomfortable with them, so I waited roughly 2 weeks and tried again. I gave her about 1/3 the recommended dosage yest morning and she was really in pain with them all night. they are supposed to be hypoallergenic(ther-biotic infant complex by klaire labs) and I thought they might help her. I Need a Pediatrician to Listen!

Los Angeles, CA

Hi Everyone, This is my first time posting-- I live in Redondo Beach and am looking for a new Pediatrician. My 11 week old daughter is great most of the time. She sleeps for seven to eight hours a night, eats well, and loves to laugh and play. About every two weeks, she will lose her mind for about a week. She is in obvious pain and screams a high pitch scream for 10-20 minutes at a time throughout the day, lasting about 5-7 days. I truly believe it is gas or cramping because she will be crying and tooting the whole time as well as straining and pulling her knees into her chest, even though she poops fine. I thought she may have been lactose intolerant so I put her on soy and there is no difference. I have been to the Ped three times for help (in addition to countless calls to the office and after hours care) and now they have her on Axid, Mylecon (sp?), and prune juice and Tylenol as needed. I keep telling the Ped that she does not have reflux, and mylecon doesn't work. I also don't like the prune juice. I am just told to do the usual --hold her for 30 mins after feeding, bicycle legs, propped mattress, ect.. All of this is not working and the Ped is not listening, and actually called her a "difficult baby". Now I am upset and confused. I would appreciate it if anyone has some insight into this situation and/or who can vouch for a Ped in the area (Redondo, Hermosa, Manhattan, Torrance).

I Thought Colic Was Supposed to End at 3 Months?

Boston, MA

My little girl at 16 weeks STILL has colic. Starting every day around 4:30 pm she cries and cries and cries AND cries. It is taking a huge toll on me, my husband and our marriage. We are at our wits end. It started at 4 weeks of age, and now 10 weeks later it is not much better. I often work at night, so I leave the house with her screaming, and then my poor husband has to deal with it alone. We do all the 'colic' tricks - swaddling, swinging, shushing, white noise, dark room, etc, etc, etc, but nothing seems to work. We try to put her down for a nap BEFORE 4:30 hits, but often times she wakes up and the screaming begins. Yes, I have read the Happiest Baby on the Block and Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. I have tried a sling and a baby bjorn - she HATES them both! Our pediatrician thinks she might have acid reflux, so we have her on Zantac, and raised her crib at one end so she sleeps upright. She usually sleeps well at night, but is a horrible napper, and I think this is why she melts down at the end of every day. I try to take her in the car everyday so she'll get a longer nap, but it does not seem to help, and with today's gas prices, it is not the most economical thing for me to do. I adore my little girl, but I am not enjoying her, or my husband and am starting to dread each day. It is horrible. I feel like a failure as a parent, and I can't even console my own child. I am surprised it did not end at 3 months like it does for most infants. I know I will never have a second child in fear of having to go through this again. Has anyone else gone through this? Any tips from anyone would be great. Yes, I know it will end someday, but in the meantime I feel like I am going to have a nervous breakdown!

Ideas for Gett 6-Month-old to Entertain Himself?

Kansas City, MO

We have 2 1/2 kiddos of our own (#3 is due in July, I'm counting her as the 1/2). :) And we're licensed foster parents and on Thursday got a 6-month-old little boy entrusted to our care temporarily. He's the sweetest little guy and just absolutely precious, but he can't entertain himself AT ALL!!! As a SAHM with 2 other small kiddos and 5 months pregnant as well, I'm having a hard time keeping him entertained. We've tried all the baby equpiment (jumpers, swing, bouncer, exersaucer) and if it helps him at all (and it usually doesn't), it's only for 5-10 minutes at a time. He can sit independently and if I pile the right toys up around him and he doesn't topple over, he might sit and play quietly for 10-15 minutes a couple of times a day, but that's really it. I have lots to do in a day - dishes, laundry, cooking, caring for all 3 kids, meal prep for breakfast, lunch, dinner... you all know what running a house with small kids takes! And, with my own boys, by the time they were this age, they could sit and play on the floor near me while I folded laundry or be in their high chair with a toy while I fixed dinner. But this little guy is just overwhelming me! :) Plus, all the bending and lifting picking him up, carrying him around and moving him from place to place hoping to find something he'll be happy with for a few minutes is really starting to hurt my back and baby-belly. I've tried both the snuggli and a sling, but with my belly and his personality, neither have worked so far. Any ideas to help him entertain himself - not just things he might find really really fun, but, in general, to get him used to the idea that it's okay to sit and play by yourself for a little bit without having to listen to him cry? I've had 2 kiddos this age... I feel really dumb for not knowing how to handle this, but, really, he's just a 180 from either of my kids and I'm out of ideas! Thanks!

Ideas to Help My Twelve Month Old Crawl

Omaha, NE

My daughter will be twelve months old at the end of this month and she still is not crawling. She can sit, do a baby push-up, and roll over both ways. I am looking for any tips or ideas to help her to crawl. When I place her on her tummy or in the crawling position she just rolls to her back. I have placed food or toys out in front of her, but she just rolls over and stretches her body out while laying down to reach them. If she cannot reach the toy or food and she is more than content to play with her feet or hands. I have tried toys that roll and when they roll out of reach she finds something else to play with like the carpet. Her fine motor skills and verbal skills are where they should be, but no crawling or standing. Any ideas would be very helpful

Im a Walking Pacifier, Help! I'm Also Needing Advice with Weening Frm Co-sleepin

Stationed Overseas, AP

I'm nursing exclusively only because my baby will NOT take a bottle. My daughter is almost 7 weeks old and refuses any bottle or pacifier. When she needs soothing, I'm it and theres nothing else that will satisfy her. She's to the point now of wanting to suck so much (of me) that she's taking in extra milk which later makes her spit up ALOT. Help! Any suggestions? I tried to introduce a paci at about 2 weeks of age although most of the literature online suggests to wait atleast 6 weeks till after birth. I'm also still co-sleeping which I'd like to start weening from but she wont sleep or nap unless she is with me. I've tried putting my worn clothes by her so she'll still "smell me", swaddled her, and done anything else I could possibly think of. Usually the only way she'll fall asleep is if I lay her on my bed and wait for her to fall asleep completely and then I can get up quietly and carefully. Both of these issues are starting to effect my marriage, espepcially since my husband cant feed her with a bottle and swaddler her for some quality time.

In Desperate Need of Prayer

Dallas, TX

I know I'm supposed to be asking for advice, but I'm asking for prayer. Some of you may have read a thread I started right before Christmas about a family that I've become close to. The husband lost his job, and they had a baby due Jan 2 and a 4 year old already. Well, the baby, who is now nearing a month old, was rushed to the hospital last night because she stopped breathing. Luckily they noticed early. They are at Cook's in Fort Worth, and the baby is on 100% oxygen because her lungs collapse when they take her off, and she stops breathing. When we talked to the dad earlier today, they said they knew for sure that she has RSV, but other tests were being run, and they would find out more later. The husband had an interview tomorrow, so I'm sure he hasn't even thought about that. I just ask that you pray for this beautiful baby to recover quickly and that the dad will be able to reschedule his interview. Thank you all for your prayers.

Inconsolable Infant

Cedar Rapids, IA

I have a 4 week old baby. She was recently put on Zantac for acid reflux, however she is still inconsolable. She seems constipated and maybe it's gas too but when she's awake she's crying. She spends more time crying than content when she's actually awake. We are at our wits end. The Ped has set her up for a upper GI test but I don't think that it's the acid reflux at this point. She will arch her back and just wail. It really seems like something inside is hurting her. She was switched to the Nestle Good Start-Soy a week ago and that hasn't seemed to help her. We've tried prune juice and the mylacon drops but she's still SO upset all the time. The Ped ruled out colic as well because it's not a specific time that she's upset, it's ALL the time. She'll wake up from a sound sleep crying like something is hurting her. I know she's constipated since her bowel movements are formed and not the peanut butter consistancy. She had some surgery at 10 days of age but it wasn't anything around her intestines. They took her tail bone out but again didn't touch the intestines or bowels. IS this just a wait it out game until she gets older or are there any suggestions out there for us. I just hate to see her in pain all the time.

Infant Separation Anxiety

Dallas, TX

I have a 10 month old son...I believe he has extreme seperation anxiety. He screams, not just cries whenever my husband or I leave the room. Even if we keep talking and he can hear us. He even cries if we just walk about 5 feet away in the SAME room. I have a 2 year old daughter and she did not experience this at all so it is completely new to us. However, we are extrememly frustrated b/c if he is awake we can do nothing except hold him or sit directly next to him. I am not kidding or exaggerating it is this bad. Has anyone experienced this? If so, is there anything that helps? I do know this is developmentally appropriate but I did not realize to this degree it could happen. Please please do not tell me to carry him around in a backpack or front pack b/c I am unwilling to do that. My husband and I have to go to the bathroom with him literally on our laps sometimes b/c he screams and turns bright red with huge tears. As you can imagine this has caused much sleep problems too for him and us b/c he wakes and will not go back to sleep. We have done the cry it out thing for an 1 1/2 hours and after that we can't take it anymore. Please offer reasonable and helpful solutions...thanks!

Interaction with 3 Month Old Infant Who Makes Little Eye Contact

Austin, TX

My little girl is just over 3 months and I am a first time mom. I have 0 experience with babies. How much am I supposed to be interacting with her through the day? I want to help her grow physically and mentally, but I don't want to be "in her face" all the time. Because lately when I am trying to talk to her and "play" with her she looks over her shoulder the whole time and won't make any eye contact. That makes me think I am overwhelming her and she can't handle it. Is that normal? She looks at her toys and smiles. Everything I read says that my face is supposed to be the most exciting and inspiring thing in her world, but she won't really look directly at me or my husband very much. I really don't know how to interact with her as she gets older and how much to let her "play" hang out on her own?

My son is 3 months old and has started getting really fussy. He's had a little colic from birth, but it had gotten better. Lately he doesn't nap for more than 45 minutes to an hour, usually. He'll be sleeping sometimes and just wake up arching his back and screaming. He doesn't cry everytime he's laying down, so I don't think its an ear infection. Sometimes there is nothing I've foundto sooth him. We feed him, change him, bounce him, rock him, walk him. He will sometimes chew on my knuckle, but I just don't understand the whole thing. Is It Wrong That My Best Friend Has Never Bought Anything for My 10 Month Old?

New York, NY

So me and my boyfriend where talking the other night and he said something that really got me thinking about my best friend. We have a 10 month old daughter together and he was saying how some of my other friends so dont have so much money have bought things for our daughter, and my co workers have gotten me tons of things for my baby shower and he is supposed to be someone very important in her life her "Uncle Pauly" and he has never even done anything for her. not even so much as a card or letter or something for her to look back on that we could show her and say "your uncle gave this to you when you where a baby". Now im not the type to ask people for things or expect them but i do think he has a good point. The reason why the conversation came up is because my best friend went on a date with someone he barely even knows and bought this person a $60 gift. Now if he can buy someone he barely even knows a $60 gift how come he hasnt dont anything for someone he claimes is so special to him. Moms what is your opinion on this situation? Is My 19 Mo Old Ready to Be Potty Trained?

Chicago, IL

Hello Everyone, Will try and make this short. My daughter for the past couple of months has been saying 'pee pee' and 'poo poo' when she goes. She is now pointing at her diaper (front for pee/back for poop). She says 'uh oh, pee pee'. I think she knows what's happening, but I think she's too little. She puts the potty seat on the toilet. I put her on it a few times, she says 'pee pee', but nothing happens. Last night was the corker. She was in the bath tub. She sings and talks while she is in there playing with her toys. I walked away for a split second. I noticed she was quiet, then she started saying 'uh oh'. When I walked in...she stood in the tub and pointed to the floor and said 'uh oh'. WELL.....she had gone poop in the tub (never did this before...it's my worst fear). She had taken the poop out of the tub and put it on the floor. First I was mortified, then thought...I need to get her and her toys out of there, then I laughed. At least she knew that it didn't belong in there. After I cleaned her up and put her pj's on....she took her diaper off every time she pee'd. I put a onesie on her so she couldn't get to it. She is starting to get obsessed. I know people say they may be ready when they do not like to be wet. I'll be going through a million diapers a day at this rate. My mom always says she's too big for her britches. A smartie pants. She also said we were potty trained by the time we were 2. So, what do you think? Is she ready?

Is My Baby Girl Behind in Her Development at 9 Months Old?

Boston, MA

Hello there! My baby girl is 9 months old, and I am very concerned about her development. She recently had her 9-month visit and her pediatrician was very surprised at all the things she's not doing at 9 months old (crawling, clapping, making different vowel and consanent sounds, playing peekaboo, etc.). She was evaluated by Early Intervention even before her 9 month pedi visit, and she did qualify for services, but minimally. They aren't too concerned, but I still am. As time passes I'm not seeing much progress, and I'm getting more and more concerned. Any words of wisdom?

Is My Child's Development in Trouble?

Albuquerque, NM

Hello out there, I am in need of some advise in regards to my baby girl's weight and growth rate. I am a very concerned 1st time mother with 6 month old daughter that just doesn't want to eat. I breast fed her for a little over 3 months and had trouble breaking her because she wouldn't drink from the bottle when I returned to work. I would leave work throughout the day to feed her but stopped when my job was in jeopardy. I had a hard time breaking her altogether but finally made it work. Now she just won't have formula or breast milk. I am very worried because she has been 13.5 lbs for almost 3 months now and just not gaining anymore weight. Her height is just fine in developmental charts but she is in 5-10% of weight. She was almost 13 lbs at 3 months and now that she is 6.5 months she is only 13.5? What could be the problem? Any suggestions on how to help my little one gain weight? Is this common? I know and understand every baby's growth is different but I want to ensure she is getting the proper nutrition. I am trying to feed her level 1 jar foods and cereal but she just won't eat very much. At her 6 month apt, they didn't have any concerns with her developmental milestones but didn't really tell me anything about her weight. Any suggestions or advise is very much appreciated. Thank you all!
