Is This What Teething Was like for Your Child?

My daughter is 6 months old and has recently been very difficult to get to sleep and then wakes up a number of times screaming. She doesn't seem to be hungry but it's really hard to get her back down to sleep. She won't take a pacifier but does have a little lovey blanket. All she does when we put her down is roll around and shove it in her mouth and won't fall asleep. I've given her Tylenol and that helps but I'd hate to keep giving it every night. Is this how teething was for your child and if so was there anything that helped? How long did it last before the tooth came in? Thanks so much!

Hi C. -- This does sound like she's teething. My daughter took it pretty well, only crying at night for about a week. She soon learned to deal with the pain and would sometimes mumble in pain before falling asleep again. My son, on the other hand, had all the classic teething symptoms: fever, night-crying, loss of appetite, excessive drooling, diarrhea...the works. It lasted approximately 2-3 weeks. Once the first tooth finally popped out, the symptoms started to wane and after the second tooth came out, he went back to normal. It feels like forever but once the first tooth comes out, the symptoms will subside. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Teething Tablets found at Wal-mart. You might need to ask someone where they are due to Wal-marts being different in here they put them. Some have them in the baby section, others have them near the pharmacy.

All my kids got 2 teeth at a time. Regretfully I only found out about the tablets with the youngest.

Try them,
Nanc

Try using Oragel or something similar, which goes directly on the gums instead of medicine. Also the teethers that go in the freezer make the gums feel good.

Yes, it sounds like she is teething. Does she have teeth yet? The first couple teeth do not really bother the baby as much as later teeth do I find. During the day and before nap, try Hyland's Teething pills (homeopathic) and ambesol. You can use ambesol at night too. But if your baby has been very cranky and not eating all day then go ahead and give her 1/2 to full dose before bed. I worry about long term medication too. Yes, teething can last a long time! This last round was all four molars within a month and it was especially difficult for my son. We would give him a half dose of either motrin or tylenol before bed and try to rotate the medication since you are not supposed to use either one for more than a week. It took the edge off and that with ambesol made things more bearable for everyone.

Hi C.,
I have 4 children and each one of them were different, with everything.

I was advised when my first was born, now 18, to use Humphreys teething tablets. I have had a hard time finding them for my last 2 kids, now 8 and 2 1/2. I did find them at the K-mart pharmacy. I had to order them, then go back. That was getting difficult, since I don't shop K-mart often, so I looked into CVS and found quick melt tablets, that work great for teething. Find some, get some baby orajel, and keep tylenol on hand. Alternate every other day, so she doesn't get used to any one thing.

You may want to do something, besides tylenol, before bedtime, to help her relax and sleep better during the night.

good luck

Yes. Our son suffered so much and was hard to put down, up during the night screaming for hours. We had to give him Tylenol or Motrin, teething tablets, baby orajel, a wet cold wash cloth. You name it - we did it or tried it.

I always thought my son must be the only one who had a hard time teething because none of the other mothers I know ever talked about there child having such a hard time.

You are not alone. Now our son is 18 months and is dealing with his molars. He was up at 5AM this morning because of them. Ugh.

I would recommend teething tablets in place of the tylenol or in addition to them on the really bad days. They are all natural herbal tablets that dissolve in your baby's mouth. I always felt better giving my babies them and they really did work. Frozen washclothes were great too! Some of mine did this for weeks and my oldest had teeth after a few nights. Good Luck! C.

Yes she is teething. Yes you can give her Tylenol for this but you can also give her baby Anbesol or Orajel or even both. The Tylenol or Motrin will take about thirty minutes to kick in while the Anbesol or Orajel work right away.

Invest in teething rings, the kind you put in the freezer with the bumps on them. She can gum that for hours and it does help sooth the gums.

Hang in there because it may take awhile for the teeth to come in. Sometime they will come one at a time but at other times they may come in in groups. Each child is different but the methods of soothing the gums are generally the same.

Hope this is helpful to you. Coming from a mother of twelve.

teething can go on for a long time but it sounds like your daughter is where my son was a month ago. He did the same thing and I gave him infant Motrin for a few nights and then 2 teeth were in. Once the teeth came through he was fine. Now we are going through it a bit again for a third tooth. It should only be a couple nights that severe. I got to the point that I pulled him into bed with me. I think the comfor tof being with mommy helped too. I breastfeed but during those times I would give him a bottle of formula with cold water. He would just suck on it, not really drinking. He pulled away from anything else I would give him. The sucking can make it hurt more for him but with the cold water I think that was a relief.

Yes, that's what it is like for me and my son, too. Try Motrin instead of Tylenol. Also, I have strapped my son into his swing for the second half of the night several times and it seems to soothe him. Good luck! Also, you can use Baby Oragel with the Tylenol or Motrin. Unfortunately, I have had the same inner-conflict about medicating my baby night after night during teething but, my pediatrician has reassured me that it is not a problem.

That is normal for them to put things in their mouth when teething. Is she drooling alot? I wouldn't give her tylenol all the time. Eventually she will become immune to it and when she really needs it, it won't work. I only used the tylenol in very bad cases. Instead I used Gentle Naturals Homeopathic Teething Drops. It's 100% natural. It has a picture of Winnie the Pooh on the bottle. It was easy to give and I felt better using it because of her not becoming immune to the Tylenol. I also used the tylenol when my daughter got her shots. The doctor told me to give her a dose before her doctors appointment so that it was in her system just incase she got a fever from the shots. (Just a little extra info). I also switched off with infant motrin. The motrin lasts longer (tylenol 4 hours - motrin 6 hours) this way you are giving less dosages. Hope this helps.

Teething is rough and, unfortunately, it is usually quite a while (months? I can't remember exactly) before the tooth actually arrives...and then there are 9 more teeth coming. I don't like to medicate unnecessarily, but if you can relieve the pain and get some sleep, it's not all bad. Personally, I found children's motrin to be more effective for pain and tylenol more so for fever.

Teething is not fun, and unfortunately goes on for quite awhile. I used the teeting drops by Gentle Naturals - I could only find them at Target. For some reason, the tablets did not work for my daughter. But I think it is worth a shot if you can't find the tablets. Good luck, I know it is tough to watch your baby in pain.

Hi C.:

Are you sure this is teething? Have any emotional changes occurred with you or anyone else in the house? She could be responding to upset in the home. Have you changed her diet recently? Consider. Set up a relaxing nighttime ritual to help her to peacefully go to sleep and stay asleep.

Hope these help.

Best to you and family,
