My 4 year old has recently been permanently dismissed from his daycare due to consistant bad behavior. I need to find a therapist for testing and childcare that can help turn this bad behavior around. Any direction is greatly appreciated!

ECI (Early Childhood Intervention) will do a free evaluation. I believe you do have to have a referral though so see if you pediatrician will refer you. The number for the Collin County office is ###-###-####. They will test all his developmental, social, nutrician, vision, hearing, and motor skills and let you know if and what areas he could use some help.

I am in the same boat as you. My Kindergartener has been sent to the principal twice this school year for disrespecting authority (once, he actually kicked a teacher). I was told that they do not do it in Kindergarten, but if he would have done what he did in 1st grade, he would have been suspended...Please forward any responses you get to me. I am at a loss! Thanks!

I've recently read the Love and Logic book on parenting techniques. Itis by Chrales and Jim Fay. There is one for the early childhood years ages 0-6. I'd highly recommend it. It teaches kids responsibility and consequencces of their own actions. I also have a neighbor who will be facilitating a course on it in a couple of weeks. It may help you. Good luck!

Before you spend lots of money having your child analyzed, I might be able to help you. I might not be what you're looking for, but it could be worth considering. I am a parenting coach. I specialize in sleep issues of young children, but I have SOME knowledge about behavioral issues with toddlers, preschoolers, and young school-age children. If you have ever watched the TV show Supernanny or Nanny 911, I operate very similarly to the way those nannies operate. I would spend 24 hours in your home simply observing, and then I would initiate a Plan of Action for you and your child. Please don't hesitate to email me if you're interested in finding out more information.

Try a developmental pediatrician. One that is recommended to me is Dr. Lisa Genecov. Check if she is in your insurance. She is at Medical City of Dallas (7777 Forest Lane.) I haven't been there yet.

Also try going to a Neurologist. I went to Dr. Chudnow. Their website is http://www.texaschildneurology.com/

Check with your school district, too. They may have program for kids.

Another place that I've heard good things about is: http://www.cscfw.org/about/

M.,
Do you mind me asking what behavioral problems he was showing, and what day care he was at. I have been in the preschool industry for almost 6 years, and I currently run my own In-home preschool. I know that some children may need a doctor to be involved, but some just need a little guidance. A lot of preschool teachers are not trained well enough to handle certain situations, and lable the child as a "trouble child".
I am sure that you are probably in a hurry to get him back into school. When you find a school you like, just have a meeting with the director and the teacher, and ask them about their dicipline policy. Also, ask them what they would do in certain situations. Remember, you are paying them a lot of money, and you are trusting them with your child.
Also, all children go through the "terrible two's". They are just trying to be independent and they ALL think that the world revolves around them.
Good Luck in your search for a new school.

Dr. Susan Fletcher in Plano and her team are great with testing and assessments. They are one of the only ones in the area to use MMAT testing which provides a much more unbiased look at the problems your child may be having. Her team offers play therapy, general therapy, family therapy, etc. Susan's Website is www.fletcherphd.com. She is also the author of Parenting in the Smart Zone. Hope this helps and good luck!

My son had the same situation at that age and I was at my wits end. I turned to Montessori school and it was great. As a boy, he needed the structure and discipline. I went the play therapy route as well and didn't feel that provided much benefit. Personally, I think boys need a more structured environment and the Montessori teaching worked well for my son.

Let me know if you would like to correspond in greater depth as I know it is stressful and they didn't have Mammaource when my now 11 yr old was 4. You can email me at ____@____.com
