Baby Name Question

So I have sort of a silly question. I have a daughter named Allison, but we usually call her Allie. I am pregnant, and if it's a boy (we aren't finding out), we want to name him Oliver. I don't know if we will call him Ollie or not (usually nicknames just sort of happen more than being planned!), but if we do, is that too weird to have Allie and Ollie? Personally, I don't really think it'll be a big deal...we still call Allie 'Allison' a lot, and she has a few other nicknames she goes by.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow, thank you! You're all making me feel SO much better about this! Plus, I'm loving the encouragement on the name Oliver because we've already had some negative feedback from people we know...argh!!! We love it though!!

Allison and Oliver both fit fine with our last name, and plus....who's to say it's even a boy...maybe little Claire is in there!! :)

UPDATE: We had a GIRL! Claire Elizabeth!

Use it if you like it. :) My boys are Devin, Gareth, and Brendan, but I usually go through a few names for each before getting it right, something like, "Devin, Gilbert, whoever you are, stop it!" (Gilbert is my cat and Brendan is less than two months old so is not getting yelled at yet, but you get the idea--doesn't matter if the nicknames are similar or not.)

Oliver is a cute name, too. :)

I can see it being a challenge when you're telling them to stop fighting: "Allie, stop hitting Ollie!" "Ollie, give that back to Allie, NOW!" You might get the names mixed up and kids just wait for those moments. :)

That said, if you like the name, stick with it. Sounds like you could go with his full name anyway, so it may be a non-issue.

Nah, name him what you want and don't worry about what other people think. My husbands name is Storm, he has a brother Skyler. People used to not believe me. His mom wouldn't change their names for anything, still loves them to this day.

I love the name Oliver. I have two where the end sound is ER. I found that those are the two i get mixed up when I am trying to get their attention. But like others have said...its you choice!!! I think it is actually really cute that their nicknames would be close to each other.

I love both names.

That said, I raise two children. Both have names that start with "L". They do not rhyme or even have the same number of syllables. Nonetheless, I am CONSTANTLY confusing their names. Granted, I am verbally clumsy and others might not have as big of an issue keeping their names separate.

If it was ME, I wouldn't choose similar nicknames because *I* would mix them up ALL of the time. But for you, it might work great!

i think its cute although you will call the other one the opposite name all the time. I do it and my kids names both end in a N (although im starting to throw in the dogs names here and there too so maybe its age)

I have an Allison/Alli too. Great name :)

I don't think it matters as long as you like the names. You will have mix-ups,m but who really cares. I call my daughters by each other's names all the time anyway.

I have an Oliver aka Ollie- who is 4 years old. I keep hearing the name more and more. I met two babies in the past week with the name Oliver. My Ollie has a best friend named Ellie. We think it is so cut to say Ollie and Ellie! So go for it! Blessings to you and your family on your upcoming addition!

Allison and Oliver are beautiful names! Maybe if you got into the habit of calling them by their formal and nicknames often, then when you're talking about them together, you could use one longer name and one nickname.
ie. Allison and Ollie or Oliver and Alli.

too late but.. and only my opinion.. I love both names and I think Alli and Ollie are really cute together.
Just don't tell anyone what names you are considering . Just announce the names when your son is born.
Best wishes

It's kind of twee and cutesy, but it's only their nicknames. Allison and Oliver would make a lovely sibset if you never used nicknames. Unless you went with Iver as a nickname over Ollie.

I don't think it's weird, like you said, don't plan just let the nickname happen. He may not fit with Ollie....

I think Allison and Oliver are great names and if you like them then it is your decision. I do not think it is weird to call them Allie and Ollie, I just think it may be a little confusing to the children, especially the younger one while learning to recognize his name.

Allie & Ollile? Really?

I'm going to be the voice of dissention... I think you really need to think twice about having an Allie & Ollie. I've known so many people who just didn't think of that kind of stuff when they named their kids. You also have to listen to their last name with their first. My mom made a mistake with my oldest sister - her intitials were WW until she got married - and without giving away her full maiden name it was pretty bad.

I have neighbor's whose last name begins with an M - and all of their kids' first names begin with an M. C'mon - it's way too cute and nauseating... Consider your children - when they're in school... I had a college friend name Pete Peterson and I wondered what his parents were thinking when they named him.
