Academy/school for Pregnant Girls

Brenda,
as others responded, cps schools have programs within the school if she wants to go to a "typical school setting". The alternatives are also a good choice, if she wants something smaller, more attention for her needs. Look up the alternative school network and there are lists of one near you. Some that I have heard of being good are Rudy Lozano Academy (Little Village neighborhood) and Aspira (north side). Hope this helps!

School-Based Program - This is a comprehensive program that provides services in cooperation with the Chicago Board of Education to pregnant and parenting Chicago teens. The Institute primarily focuses on young mothers and their children and offers accredited high school health classes,counseling, case management,and referral services to pregnant and parenting teens and their families. Psyco-educational groups on child development, infant and maternal health and parenting skills are also available. The program is open to students attending the following public high schools:

Teen Parent Services (TPS)
TPS is a state-funded program for teen parents and pregnant teens with the goal of keeping teens in school or getting them back to school in order to earn their high school diploma or GED equivalent. For eligible participants, TPS can assist with the costs associated with going to school, such as books, childcare, transportation, GED classes, uniforms and more. TPS also provides Family Case Management and information on other social services, including childcare, immunizations, literacy programs, housing, domestic violence and medical care.

Eligibility Requirements:

There is a school in chicago called Flowers - it s a Chicago Public School (CPS). If that is not the name, go to CPS web sight and type in the type of school in the search box! Good luck!

Hello Brenda, I went to Arts of Living one of the schools the other women mentioned. I just wanted to give you my experience;

At Arts of Living you will graduate at your home high school. So she'd be a student at say Mather H.S. (my situation) and transfer to Arts of Living. She'd go to classes at Arts of Living but come graduation time she'd graduate from Mather.

I was at Mather H.S. during the beginning of my pregnancy. I dedcided to transfer to Arts of Living. For many reasons; fewer students, being able to talk w/other women in my same situation, health classes, a one on one couselor, and a WIC office in the building (saving me a trip).

I loved it. I was surrounded by women in my same situtaion and women who had their babies already. We bonded very well. And none of the teachers of staff gave you dirty looks. They were just trying to help us finish high school. I really liked it and recommend it over a regular C.P.S. H.S. setting.

Arts of Living will help her concentrate on herself and her baby's health and development. And pursuing further education. I think @ a regular high school she'll just be another student not a special student and young mother. Also she won't be exposed to normal negative high school behavior such as; cutting class, immature peers, drugs, etc. Good Luck to you and her and her new family.

my cousin used to teach at simpson academy for girls - all of the students are pregnant or parenting. it is part of cps.

I am a teacher in Chicago. I suggest that you call the high school located near the home where the girl will be living. Ask for the counselor and explain the situation. If the counselor doesn't know, call back and ask the nurse. There are "alternative" high schools for pregnant girls, as well as programs at regular high schools.
