My friend has taken 2 pregnancy tests that say she’s pregnant. She’s had an IUD for 4 yrs; she made a doctor appointment for next week. What are the chances of a healthy pregnancy if you have had an IUD for 4 years?
Update: She still has the IUD inside her.

What can I do next?

Hello, my mother works in a high school with teen parents and their babies. She said the rate of pregnancy with an IUD seems to be very high and that all the girls she knows that got pregnant with one in had perfectly healthy babies. Most of the doctors choose to leave the IUD in until the baby is born if it's not in the way.

Hi T.--I am a Certified Nurse Midwife with 2 clients in my practice who became pregnant with an IUD. Both had it removed as soon as the pregnancy was discovered--in the 1st trimester. One is due to deliver any day, and the other is now 10 weeks pregnant, and just yesterday heard her baby's heartbeat after removal of the IUD 3 weeks ago.

This is relatively unusual--but does occur. I have also had a client who did not have the device removed because she was well into the 2nd trimester before pregnancy was discovered, and we took a picture of the IUD in the placenta!! The baby was born in my Birth Center with a BIG smile on her face!!

The risk is miscarriage at the time of IUD removal.

If I can help your friend further, Please call me @ ###-###-####, or on my cell ###-###-####.

thanks, Kathy

As far as I know, they are good. The IUD usually comes out with the baby. I had a family practice doc who got pregnant twice with a US made IUD. She then ordered a different type from Europe, had it put in and did not get pregnant again!

Absolutely no problem. I had the same thing many years ago and had two children afterward with perfect pregnancies. She doesn't have to worry. If it is still in, they will take it out at the first visit.

I had an IUD (the 10 year non-hormonal type). I had it taken out a couple of weeks ago to try to concive our second child. I went to an ob/gyn for a preconception exam and she said that it is possible to get pregnant as soon as the IUD was removed esp since mine didn't have hormones. She also suggested starting prenatal vitamins, so I would suggest your friend start taking them now even if she isn't positive(it can't hurt, only help).

i would assume the doc would have called her in WAY SOONER!!! my gosh... anyway... my husband was conceived when his mother had an IUD... and he turned out perfectly healthy... she said she really didnt have any issues with him... the only thing that happened to her is her milk never came in... but i'm not sure if that was related or not. everything is possible with God... !!

My hairdresser went in to have a hysterectomy in Feb. and they told her she was pg....she had an IUD at the time. She had a healthy baby boy in Sept. God really wanted her to have this baby.

I got pregnant while having an IUD in (for almost 2 years). I had it removed when I was 6 weeks along and there was a risk of miscarriage. I have a healthy and happy 7 month old now.

The risk is high for etopic pregancy. If she avoids that situation, then she may be fine.

Sounds like a scary situation. I wish her the best.

I can't relate to using an IUD but I became pregnant 2 times after the first month coming off the pill and then miscarried. I don't know if it was related to coming off of BC or not but I always assumed it was.

Well, now I'm expecting my 3rd and became pregnant again the first month after coming off the pill and so far so good. I'm 4 1/2 months and everything's going great!

Good luck to your friend.
I'm sure everything will be fine....

P.S. When I miscarried the 2 other times, I never "felt" pregnant so if your friend's feeling pregnant, that's always a good sign.

Did she get PG while she had the IUD? If so, she needs to be aware that there is a higher risk of having an eptopic PG. If it was after, then she doesn't need to worry. I actually had 2 miscarriages after having my IUD out, and only had it for 6 months. My Dr. says that it has nothing to do w/ the IUD. From what i understand, having an IUD doesn't affect your chances of conceiving and having a healthy pregnancy once it is removed. Good luck to your friend!
